Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

Architect of the West Kingdom replaced Viticulture for me. Didn't need another light worker placement - and I have Vinhos to scratch the wine theme.

I see all the time people say in their reviews or roundups 'but it's not too similar to X to have both in my collection'. What are some examples of games that you find too similar to need both?

And of course, this is totally subjective, so please be polite if you disagree! 

Personally, I don't feel like I need **Codenames** and **Decrypto** and I got rid of **Star Realms** when I got into **Shards of Infinity**.

What games ARE too similar for you to own both?

 Although the old Kemet (not sure what the components of the new Kemet will look like) is kind of in an uncanny valley situation. The miniatures are flashier than cubes, but are crappy compared to miniatures from many other games. If they had CMON (or better miniatures) that would be even fancier than their current miniatures. However, if done well and they were tasteful, I probably wouldn't be horribly upset with them

I've been very interested in **Too Many Bones** as of late, but it's  hard for me to justify the price tag. I know chip theory wants their stuff to be completely waterproof and have great presentation, and I can't see them changing their mission statement anytime soon, nor do I expect them to. With that being said,  when there isn't really a gameplay benefit to fancy components, I would love to see some of these companies do budget versions of their big games. TMB for example could just have cardboard tokens instead of the poker chips, and replace the neoprene mats with cardboard as well. 

I've seen a number of Kickstarters doing this recently, like The Great Wall and Oathsworn,  having a base pledge version without minis  and having addable options for fancier components for those who can afford/want to trick out their game, rather than have just an already deluxe base game. I think it's a great way to make the hobby more accessible. I also realize this is mostly an effect of kickstart games, and the majority of retail releases do aim to be as budget friendly as possible. 

So what game would you like to see a budget version of? Kingdom Death Monster without minis? Oathsworn with cheaper cardboard components?

Haven't gotten rid of any board games in a while, though I'm thinking of letting go of **Puerto Rico**. I haven't played it in nearly a decade, and, well, the theme just gets worse and worse the more I think about it.

What did you add to or removed from your shelf last month? (August, 2021)

 This one here below it, if I buy this one, I get this creature. I get this snake he's the guy comes with this, and the snake is good because he cancels out other large creatures and any unit that he's with gets a +1 movement, and so the blue tiles are mostly defensive. Tiles, there's all different things. Here'S another creature! You can get here is a victory point

 So you have to be careful with with innopolis. You can show up in that, if you transport from my pyramid, so you get to these temples very quickly and you want to get to these temples because they give you victory points and they give you extra prayer points at night. So they're very useful thing to have. You can also move your people, one space which doesn't seem very far, but there's a lot of ways to increase the movement speed of your folks

 But when you do get one of these, it's yours for the rest of the game now for the course of the game, you're going to be using your troops to attack other people, you'll start with ten of them, but you'll have more as time goes by when You move troops, you have different opportunities. You can always pay to prayer points to teleport from a pyramid to any of these obelisks all over the board. So you have to be careful with with innopolis. You can show up in that, if you transport from my pyramid, so you get to these temples very quickly and you want to get to these temples because they give you victory points and they give you extra prayer points at night

 The power tiles need to be grabbed up, temples need to be occupied, pyramids need to be developed, there's plenty to do in a short play time. I like that it rewards aggression - building up and just sitting there is a surefire way to lose. The only real beef I have with the game is that I wish it came with more player aids describing the power tiles. Only one is included in the box

 The miniatures representing the monsters are excellent. It's hard to believe that this is an older game, as the it looks pretty modern. The power tiles need to be grabbed up, temples need to be occupied, pyramids need to be developed, there's plenty to do in a short play time. I like that it rewards aggression - building up and just sitting there is a surefire way to lose

**Kemet Blood and Sand**: Found out this week that my groups first play of this game we got some rules wrong, which meant when I went to play it at 2 players we fudged some of the rules but I had corrected some of our previous mistakes. Nonetheless we had a great time and are looking forward to a 5 player match to really get everything going on the board!

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (July 30, 2021)

**Cryptid** (4x3P) I love how quick and elegant this one is. I've played **Search for Planet X** which has a similar idea on a grander scale and while that one is also a lot of fun, I think I might prefer how streamlined Cryptid keeps everything.

**Kemet** (1x3P) First time ever playing this and I was tasked with teaching and unpacking (complaint: Matagot included no storage bags for any components). Ended up taking us around two hours but it was a lot of fun. In the pros column it was easy to learn, had a fun combat system, and was filled with interesting decisions. In the cons column, it was a pain figuring out what all the tiles and DI cards did, the manual was terrible, and it sagged a little at the end
