Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

Why do most games nowadays have so much excess in terms of game pieces? I was really interestes in Nemesis, but after seeing how much plastic it comes with, and a big price tag because of that, I might not get it. I already have a bunch of figures with Mansions of Madness and that is more than enough. I understand wanting to have something a bit more tangible than a cardboard cutout, like Gloomhaven, but there is a certain point where it becomes ridiculous the amount of space taken up by just game pieces. Some of which, mind you, aren't always used.

This seems like too prevalent of a trend and should honestly be stopped. If not for saving people money, at least for more enviromentally better paths.

Thoughts? Are miniatures a buying point for you? Or would you prefer more "minimalist" game pieces?

The rise of way too much plastic

**Valley of the Kings**: This is an interesting one. I really like it, but there are some serious problems with the rulebook, and the player aid doesn't mention the integral forced market change. Got to play this with my wife and a friend who I haven't seen in 51 weeks (she counted). Excellent decision space, and a really difficult puzzle of figuring out WHEN to entomb cards

**Hansa Teutonica** - almost abstract; it's a highly interactive game where 80% of the mental work even early on will be on the tough decisions, and not the rules.

**Splendor** is about as difficult as Azul. Many people swear by it. **Century Spice Road** (or **Century Golem Edition**) also fits this niche. For your group it could introduce/codify resource management and marketplaces

**Cottage Garden** - your group will recognize the polyominos of Patchwork here, but with an actual board and playing 3+ players and super-cute theming, including a cat and a wheelbarrow.

**Tigris and Euphrates** - majority of the difficulty and depth again lie in the interactive, abstract strategy rather than in the rules

Recently, and largely due to COVID, I’ve started playing more board games with my girlfriends family. Mainly her little sister and her cousin. They both like board games but are more used to games like **Trivial Pursuit** and **Ticket to Ride** (before anyone complains, I really like Ticket to Ride), you know those big name board games that even non gamers have heard of.

My regular gaming group and I have been playing together since maybe 2012 now but due to more of us having kids and a global pandemic we can’t play that much anymore. We’ve played a lot of games including **Gloomhaven**, **Agricola**, **Twilight Imperium**, **Terraforming Mars** etc. so you can easily say we’re used to heavy-weight games.

I don’t quite think my girlfriends family is ready for a day of TI4 quite yet so I’ve been testing out what I would classify as light-weight games with them. Games like **Flamme Rogue**, **Azul**, **Quacks of Quedlinburg** and **Patchwork**.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see if perhaps they were ready to step it up a notch so I brought the only game in my collection that I would classify as a mid-weight game, **Istanbul**.

I started googling and looking for older Reddit posts about the subject of medium-weight games and couldn’t really find anything constructive. Some people were saying that the aforementioned **Agricola** is one of these games but to me that’s just mad. With my regular group, people will go into analysis paralysis all the time and whereas worker placement is easy to explain, how to win a round of **Agricola** is not.

Of course what is and what is not a medium-weight game is very subjective but it would be interesting to hear what you, the board game aficionado, has to say about it. Feel free to give examples of games and what about them make them into Medium-Weight games.

Medium-weight games, what are they?

1) reprints of older games that are well regarded. These games have been out for a long time and are still well regarded. **Hansa Teutonica: big box** is probably my most recent example. 

With the Harakiri Kickstarter dropping today, I was excited to check it out as it seemed like it might be something I’d be down for: and it is.  Then I looked at the price.  Over $300 for all the stuff, $200-some for the gameplay bundle and a base price of $130 without shipping.  

Everything has an opportunity cost (and I have spent this much money if not more on a single game before), but I wondered how the community at large decides where to put their gaming money (expensive games, smaller/cheaper games, a mix)?  How do you decide if a super expensive game is going to be worth it to you in the long run?

Where do you throw you’re board game money/how do you decide?

**isle of skye** is a great medium weight euro that punches above its small box. **irish gauge** is another full game in a very slim box. 

I actually wish **brass: Birmingham** came in a bigger box. It’s just slightly too small to pack up comfortably.

 Big games in little packages. Or at least bigger than what the box size would lead you to believe.  
 

A few caveats:  
 No legacy games have been included (cause you can throw them out when you are done)  
 No expansion content is included. Base game's are the only ones that count.  
 No dexterity games are included.  
 No abstract games have been included because most of the good ones (hive, chess, etc) hit above their box size.  
 These are also the games that I have had the chance to play. So games like Glory to Rome that I imagine would make this list will be absent.

For a game that comes in a smaller than ticket to ride size box, I was not expecting the crunchy brain burn I experienced while playing this game. For a game that might give a few Lacerdas a run for their money, this game takes up a surprisingly small amount of space (when packed into the box). I particularly also enjoy the 2 player game where players control a dummy player to handicap their opponent. This game is a hidden gem for me and I really think it didn't get the buzz it deserved.

For the amount of strategic complexity this game offers this game could have been a euro twilight imperium 5. Maybe the biggest game to size difference on this list.

One of the only small boxes on this list, Targi has a lot of the core crunchy decision spaces that I enjoy in Merv. As an added bonus its in a smaller box size, only for two players and plays faster.

Most of the games in this series could fall into this list. I picked the one I think had the biggest game in it. I will however say that I wish these came in bigger boxes so I didn't have to play tetris every-time I was packing up the game.

For a game of basically a deck of cards, this game has a surprising amount of replayability, strategy and cooperation (this also has me thinking a basic deck of cards could be the king of this list)

A surprisingly versatile game with a very small footprint. Some of the iconography makes it harder to learn initially but that factors into how they managed to keep the game so small.

Hear me out. For the size of the base game, this game has a ton going on. One of the first "heavy" board games I attempted to play I would still consider this heavy.

One of the meatiest economic games ever, the form factor of the roxley edition is truly top notch and the production just makes you want to play it even more.

As a companion list to the above, I wanted to show the other side of the story. Mind you I love every one of these games and would play them in a heartbeat. I just think that the shelf space they take up for the amount of game they have isn't ideal.

I love this game. But it really feels like an overproduction of a simple card game. It isn't the biggest offender on this list but it's one of the first that comes to mind.

This one on the other hand might be the biggest offender. I love the simple gameplay and I have yet to find someone that hasn't enjoyed playing this game. But you'll want several characters for the variety and the size of the box is huge for what I would describe as advanced combat Yahtzee.

A fun micro game to play in the background of game night. But on a complexity scale it's pretty low. It should have come in a box the size of a deck of cards.

This is a glorious production and I actually give this game extra points for being this grandiose and beautiful. But in terms of gameplay its lighter than most worker placement games that come in a standard ticket to ride size box.

As a base game, more than half of this box is air. It isn't as replayable once you've gone through the (way to few) scenarios that come right out of the box. From a gameplay perspective, more is offered in Arkham Horror LCG which isn't even a quarter of its size.

I wish that I got the original Rococo. I love the game regardless but this one (although pretty) doesn't justify the shelf space and price tag it demands. Beats paying out of print prices I guess.

Fun game. Exceptional production and value even if it released today. But for the depth of complexity I don't think it justifies being one of the biggest (non kickstarter) boxes ever produced.

A fun cutthroat approach to worker placement and recipe fulfillment.... but that box though. To be fair this is a deluxe set that has a ton of add on expansion content but if this is the only way to get the game then it belongs on this list.

<div class="md">Big games in little packages. Or at least bigger than what the box size would lead you to believe. 

A few caveats: 
 No legacy games have been included (cause you can throw them out when you are done) 
 No expansion content is included. Base game&#39;s are the only ones that count. 
 No dexterity games are included. 
 No abstract games have been included because most of the good ones (hive, chess, etc) hit above their box size. 
 These are also the games that I have had the chance to play. So games like Glory to Rome that I imagine would make this list will be absent.

For a game that comes in a smaller than ticket to ride size box, I was not expecting the crunchy brain burn I experienced while playing this game. For a game that might give a few Lacerdas a run for their money, this game takes up a surprisingly small amount of space (when packed into the box). I particularly also enjoy the 2 player game where players control a dummy player to handicap their opponent. This game is a hidden gem for me and I really think it didn&#39;t get the buzz it deserved.

For the amount of strategic complexity this game offers this game could have been a euro twilight imperium 5. Maybe the biggest game to size difference on this list.
