Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

 All right! So we've got a galaxy trucker, so you have got a lot of stuff in here. We'Re gon na set it up and take a look at in just a second. But i want to point out there's a lot of good components here: uh money: you have the tiles you have these nice little pieces. This is kind of what i wanted to show you here, nice little pieces right little, green tic, tacs, love those we're going to talk about what all this does we're going to set up the beginner game

 The single connector can attach just like that, as well as universal to universal. So just so we're clear, you're going to be building these, but these connections matter you could not, for instance, put this connection. This would not be legal, nor would this nor would putting a piece that does work that causes a piece not to work. So you could not put this piece here because it would cause this to not work so just know that that's a thing also in the end, when the actual action starts happening, the main crux of the game is building your ship, but then you're going to take The cards the action cards to see what happens if you have a bunch of open things off the side of your ship like this, for instance

 All of the tiles face down here in the middle you're, then one-handed you're, going to have to reach over take a tile, bring it over your board. When it's over your board, you can flip it up and take a look. Let'S get rid of the laser. You can store two pieces at a time which means that, oh, i don't want to get rid of this, because i don't want to put it out there in case somebody takes it because this is simultaneous

 The other person has an opportunity or the other people have an opportunity to go ooh battery. I want that at any point someone can flip this timer and you only do this because you're you may be done or you're forcing them to hurry up, and you see that they've got a really great, build and you're ready to roll, and so you want to Force them to the end, you would do the sand timer when it runs out. It will be the end of it now. However, you do this twice on two and three times on three once on one so forget the timer in the background we're going to keep building here, i'm just going to keep showing you different attachments

Trying to stave my hunger while slowly dying, turn by turn, still needing to place the 4 and 5 wood on the pile

 I spent the rest of the adventure just trying to catch up, scrounging for resources, mainly food when I really should have been focusing on the wood pile. Trying to stave my hunger while slowly dying, turn by turn, still needing to place the 4 and 5 wood on the pile. Sadly, a combination of cold weather, hungry beasts, and a lack of food overnight was to be my downfall.

 We had back to back Slavers and Pirates that took out massive chunks of my ship, while she was able to fight off the Pirates. It's definitely on the lighter side, but the chaos of being on a clock to build your ship made it enjoyable all the same. We're looking forward to doing the full intergalactic trek one day soon!

What Did You Play This Week? - (October 11, 2021)

 If there are planets, they'll get first choice. Same for abandoned ships. At the end of the run, they will be the richest trucker (=winner), as predicted. 

..? You put your ship together for the missions you're starting, and then fly out. You encounter things

 You build a little ship with limited parts and space and rules on how the parts can be placed. Will you prioritize cargo space, guns, flight engines, or..

 But this isn't something that would be my go-to - and I wouldn't have paid full price for it (bought it on sale).

Mine is regularly **Baseball Highlights 2045**. It's a game people will always humor me. It's a muddy brown, its about the slowest sport, it about SPORTS, and a deck builder how original. But then they start playing and I can always watch when people connect with it and after one game a simple best of 5 turns to First to 5, turns into a championship series because they don't wanna let go of the team

..but it's just too convoluted. Maybe it's just because each time I've played I've also done the teach and the rules are atrocious or possibly because it needs to be more streamlined and be redone to lean into the beat parts of it

For me, Dead of Winter. We started playing a game and were struggling in a good way. We were just starting to get on top of everything and then got two instant kills in a row, completly stopped our progress and caused a loss.

"Vlaada Chvatil" - my favorite boardgame

Once it's all duct-taped together, you fly it through space!  Get smashed up by asteroids, shot at by pirates, kidnapped by slavers, and watch your carefully crafted ship get mangled in hilarious ways.

Start with a main crew cabin, bolt on some cargo holds, maybe some guns, definitely an engine...of course there are multiple connector types for joining components, so it can be a bit harder than you'd think to find a component that will plug in

 What's the point of a box being something like 27cm x 20cm (ex. Galaxy Trucker) instead of the regular 30cm x 30cm, when it's gonna take up the same slot as a regular box game. It started bothering me to that extent, that I started buying only standard box sized games.

This may sound like a very stupid thing to rant about, but I really dislike irregular box sizes. They don't stack nicely on shelves, and just waste space.
