Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

3 Minute Board Games

**Gaia Project** ​is much better at a competitive level with strong players because there is a lot of responsibility to set up the map by the person last in turn order; with less skilled players they don't really know how to create it in such a way that makes an interesting game (understandably, it's a very difficult task).

**Brass** (both versions) I find pretty bad when not played competitively. The game only gets really interesting when played at 4p by people that understand at least the basics of how to reach a rough equilibrium of strategies (for example, 2 cotton, 1 ports, 1 iron player in Lancashire or 2 beer, 1 cotton, 1 pottery player in Birmingham). At lower levels you'll get stuff like everyone going into beer needlessly or flipping their own ports and creates a less interesting and more similar feeling dynamic from game to game.

**Scythe** is notoriously bad at a competitive level and is mostly about how much people know how to bid for faction/player combos since the balance is so poor.

Have you ever crossed over from casual play to the competitive scene of a game you liked? Which games become more compelling when played at a competitive level, and which competitive scenes have actually turned you off from a game you liked?

Which games get better or worse when played competitively?

The stuff that gets old and has diminishing returns to me either: a) has very little player interaction, b) is too tight (pursuing a tactical move will hurt your endgame too much), effectively lowering player interaction to all but incidental contact, c) has low variability in strategies, namely low variability in how those strategies are pursued (scripted openings or strategies), d) is too dependent on random factors (excessive swinginess in card draw or dice rolls), or e) give you too few options during your turn (i.e. take 1 of 2 possible actions, limited flexibility in play). 

The common thread for all of these is that although they reward long term strategy, there are tactical moments that are usually worth pursuing even if they don't directly contribute to your long term plan. Stealing a large point earner or a killer location from an opponent, going a little out of your way to block one of their moves, taking an quick opportunistic detour, or taking a quick jab at an opponent. all of these have just enough leeway to take these actions without derailing yourself, even in a 3-4p game. 

Stuff that keeps me engaged and has me itching to play again immediately afterwards: 18xx, Gaia Project, On Mars, Brass (either version), Twilight Struggle, Tigris and Euphrates.

When I was browsing through my collection, I realised there are a number of games that have created an excellent first impression but the more we play them the less we like the game. 

While this is particularly true for those games that don’t have a lot of variability and hence replayability, I’m talking about those good games that have a lot of variability and replayability but still produce diminishing returns. 

Some examples I can think of is **Robinson Crusoe**, **Wingspan**, **Scythe**, **Too many bones**etc. Clearly, a lot of games that have surprise element or ‘wow’ may fall into this bucket. This may vary from person to person. Which are your games of diminishing returns?

I did not talk much about the game itself. It's Gaia Project! You might need to check Boardgamegeek or such to get a full review. Let's just say that while it is not overly difficult to learn the rules, the game itself is fairly hard. It's a euro with a space theme, there is no combat or such, it is mostly about expanding and managing your resources and your research properly

As this is a fairly complex boardgame played over three separate boards, I really wondered how they would pull it off. UX-wise, there is some good and some not so good:

. ok. I like the card play but I find the AI opponent to be really unrewarding, it takes the fun out of the card combos when you know you need to be focusing on getting the special event cards to point block them. It feels like the solo mode is designed in such a way it hamstrings the bits that would make the game fun

One-Player Wednesday - (February 24, 2021)

Not guaranteeing huge payoffs also allows the game design to give the players a chance to run their full engine, which is a common complaint of weaker designs.

 Both of them balance short and long-term considerations, and in both games just building a huge engine is no guarantee of huge payoffs late in the game. 

My husband and I have been into board games for about 5 years now, and he has found that he really gravitates toward engine builders, whereas I have very mixed responses to the genre.  We’re trying to figure out what makes a really stellar engine building game, and would love your thoughts!

Our initial thought is that it comes down to a couple of features:

1 - There have to be a lot of opportunities for interesting synergies.  We think this is why we love Terraforming Mars, because you can really chain your cards together in interesting ways.  Conversely, I think I kinda bounced off New Frontiers because there were too many keywords that, in a game with some randomness, meant there weren’t enough interesting synergies in the game.

2 - Variety.  Even though we bounced off New Frontiers, we LOVE Race for the Galaxy and Roll for the galaxy, I think because there are SO MANY cards/tiles that no game plays the same.  We’ve found that it’s easy for an engine builder to start to feel samey because there is always a temptation to build your engines in the same ways or using similar strategies.  A huge amount of variety (and maybe paired with some well-thought-out randomness) helps keep things fresh.

3 - Streamlining.  It is so easy for engine builders to feel fiddly.  Which makes games like Res Arcana or Splendor, that are super streamlined and so satisfying, that much more fun.

What makes for a great engine builder?

[*] This games tutorial [b]will not[/b] teach new players the rules to Gaia Project. I have previously played the physical board game many times, but it had been about 2 years since I last played. I tried to do the tutorial as a refresher. I gave up, and eventually watched a YouTube overview of the game rules

 It was smart enough to recognize that it still owed me something, but not smart enough to resolve this and move on. 

[*] Not enough is done to draw the players attention to the thing that they need to do next. This might be more of a UI complaint, but during a tutorial, you need big flashing indicators and arrows that say "CLICK THIS THING NEXT".

* **1923 Cotton Club**: played once. Awesome theme, but otherwise a bit "thin". The mechanic is a bit too visible. Will sell or trade quickly

 Was able to get it for 25. After reading the rules, looks maybe a bit more simplistic (without expansion) than expected, but let's see.

Just finished my first game of **Gaia Project** and phew that was a long intense game. I won 116 to 102, was able to advance to a couple research tracks far enough to earn points and then beating the automa on one of the end goals (sectors) and tied for the other (planet types).
