Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

Food Chain Magnate is a heavy strategy game about building a fast food chain. The focus is on building your company using a card-driven (human) resource management system. Players compete on a variable city map through purchasing, marketing and sales, and on a job market for key staff members. The game can be played by 2-5 serious gamers in 2-4 hours.

 However, the amount of decisions, brain burning and depth of the game are incredible. This is tipically said to be something that *Splotter* does very well.

 Early on, an exile obtained it, and even became the usurper (so in a position to win), but the Chancellor just manged to scrape enough favour (coin) to buy it back. Then, there was so much favour on it, the exile never managed to get enough favour/warbands to fight for it or recover it. After the recovery a citizen made a play for the successor goal (Darkest Secret Banner), and got it, and even was in position to win with the 5th round roll, but the dice didn't fall for them. Then the Chancellor took it away from them, and essentially after failed campaigns both the exile and the citizen struggled to get any kind of resources together

So, the conclusion after game 2 is I think this is a game that has the potential to be really miserable for players, or be an epic battle of the minds, with an ability to create stories. Like how Food Chain Magnate can be the most miserable experience when you know you've lost 20 minutes in, or a terrific contest that'll have you discussing for hours afterwards.

So, rules wise, it was much much smoother. After reading the Law of Oath top to bottom before the game, but having played one game so I understood what the rulebook was actually talking about, it was totally fine. Only had to reference it for Campaigning (combat), as it can drastically change who rolls what depending what they attack and where you are. 

**Food Chain Magnate** where you're practically guaranteed to ruin any chance you have at winning in the first two or three turns unless you've played the game multiple times.

**1817** demands a lot from players, even for an *18xx* game. You'll need to learn about two different ways to merge companies and also a way to create more shares for existing companies, three ways for corporations to acquire each other, learn about short positions, try to predict what the loan interest rate will look like in a turn's time, prepare to fight for your right to for that sweet home token spot at auction, manage your despair as your company's stock price can fall up to eighteen (!) steps, succumb to that despair when you realize your loss is everyone else's windfall, and do all that in (at minimum, unless you get eliminated) no less than six hours.

So I was thinking about this on the drive home. Your favorite games are YOUR favorites. You love and appreciate games that clearly aren't perfect. Then you post about one of them, people start picking it apart. Maybe you care, maybe you don't, maybe you are in denial. So question..

Do you have a game in your top 20 that's has a combo minor or major flaws and you'll still defend it cause you love it so much?

My favorite game of all time is Mage Knight. It has top 5 worst rulebook, its almost themeless, and its basically beat your score IF you finish it. I don't care, the gameplay has some of the best moments and card play EVER...But I acknowledge that its flawed. I don't even let newer games get away with the same flaws.

Heavily flawed games in your top 20...but you don't care cause they're awesome to you.

I've been playing modern board games for some time now but I've only recently started to consciously think about this aspect of the games I play. I think playing [Marrakech]([URL REMOVED] repeatedly on Board Game Arena is what really opened my eyes to it. Perhaps I should explain.

* Should designers be more aware of this problem and take better steps to deal with it? Is it lazy to just let the games play differently at different player counts?

So Marrakech is a game that has a very clear random element to the game: it has a roll-and-move mechanism, where the dice dictates whether you move the common salesperson token one (⅙), two (⅓), three (⅓) or four (⅙) spaces around the board before laying a rug next to where it lands. The game is about working around this random element by playing the odds: you have to weigh up the likelihood of landing on your opponents' rugs―forcing you to pay them coins equal to the contiguous area their rugs of the colour landed on covers―against the ability to further extend your own rugs, cover over theirs and the better board position it will afford you with the salesperson: forcing your opponent into your covered areas.

I’m looking for buying raw materials, storing them, processing them with workers, storing finished products, marketing them, selling them, dealing with competition and making money. I’d much prefer if this is worker placement or dice placement or action selection so there’s this agonising decision space. 

I’ve long been waiting for a **running a store/stall** simulation game like the good old PC game **Lemonade Tycoon**. Of course, **Food Chain Magnate** might seem like it but I personally don’t find the design elegant enough. I think the mechanisms like card play, hand management and deck building don’t quite suit this theme. 

I just saw that in 2020 there were not one but two games about bees making honey. Fine, I don't know them but they get a good rating on BGG.

It did make me come up with this question: which theme have you never encountered in board games yet, but you would like to?  
Or, at the least, the theme that doesn't have a good game about it.

I think that all these weights are actually pretty spot on, although the reason I love these 3 so dearly is that the weight is apparent when learning, but not really when playing.

I thought Etherfields was under-scored and Arkham Horror LCG was over-scored. According to BGG my heaviest game is Mage Knight which also seems a bit off.

Personally, I don't know if I've ever decided that a good game is any less fun because the artwork doesn't appeal to my style (thinking of Root and Terraforming Mars specifically-- fun games, but aesthetics are only okay to me). And then there's Photosynthesis which had beautiful artwork but played very slow for me, but I don't mind that it's still on the shelf since at least it looks nice haha. Curious what other people think.

What game have you played a ton and show no signs of stopping playing.

For me, these 3 games stand out

Through the ages: A new story of civilization, the App really allowed me to go deep on this game. I always have 3 games ongoing for this with various friends and we are showing no signs of stopping. BG stats says I'm at 157 plays of it.

Ticket to Ride. For me and my wife this was the game that really got us into the hobby, played it to death, then stopped playing as we got into other games but this has recently resurfaced as my kids got old enough to play the non-kids versions, been playing alot of Nordic and loving it, but my son has been requesting Europe and I am even considering grabbing a new map or two which I think is amazing after all these years/plays that it's still feels worry further investment

Castles of Burgundy, replaced ticket to Ride as my go-to game to play with my wife on a work night. We are always down for a game of this, I'd say we are in the process of playing this to death
