GE PHC08LY vs Whynter ARC-122DS Elite

earlier this year as it started to get hot out, i decided to get a new window ac unit to replace our old floor-standing model with the big plastic tube. my main complaint with old unit was every time it turned on the compressor was so loud it woke me up multiple times every night. i started looking for the quietest unit, and also one that i could put in the window instead of taking floor space in my tiny apartment. i chose this based off of positive wirecutter/cnet reviews

All the window kits and vent tubes are included. It has a good remote control with it as well and the dehumidifying function on it works exceptionally...

The fan itself is quiet enough but the compressor shakes the body of the AC when it turns on and the whole thing rattles. The remote is very bizarre and every time you use the remote it will reset the temperature back to a median temperature and I don’t know how to change it. The home kit is complete garbage and is very slow and non-responsive. The cooling is not even that great – I have a very small room that I’m using it for and I have a temperature sensor inside the room and the air conditioner is set to 64° but it will turn off even though the temperature reading says the room is 68°

This one was super easy to install (we already had the window kit in place for the last unit). I only use the outtake hose as I have no need to pull in (hot) air from outside. Noise: This unit is so much more quiet than our last one that I thought the compressor wasn't on. Since we have our's near the TV, noise was a big issue and this one is much better for that purpose

But when the compressor turns on there is a buzzing because of a loose part in it. Maybe if not that, the AC would have been quiet the whole time.

Fan is also silent but the unit's design in favor of low noise comes at a price: air movement. The 8100 BTU unit moves less air (lower CFM) than other machines. The GE arrived damaged and I failed to notice the holes on two sides of the box until after I unpacked the unit and found corresponding damage to the a/c. Front grille pushed in and creased and condenser coil fins squashed on the other side

We live in south Florida, we work from home. In the past we have used central air to cool the entire home to a level that kept us cool while in the office. However, this year we found the electric bills unusually high and started looking for problems and then found solutions. One solution we applied was a portable ac unit to cool only the room we would be in all day

Unit worked for two days. GE Manufacture Warranty is so complicated most people will not follow the titious refund instructions. DO NOT recommend.

I contacted Whynter about repairs on the older one, which is out of warranty. It would have cost about $250 round trip shipping and repair, to send it to them. For the new one, I just re-read the warranty, and found some interesting information. If you need warranty repair in the first two months, they pay shipping

And very effective at cooling. The upward facing vents also work better in a bedroom - not blowing on you but towards the ceiling. Plus it just looks much much better than most anything out there except the very high end Kuhl Freidrichs. Hoping it is built to last because we are extremely happy it is indeed quiet and also highly efficient in cooling

So those tubes will put more heat in the room which means the rooms coolness will be reduced. You will need to fork over another $100 to buy a sleeves/covers to reduce the heat coming off the 2 tubes. Whyntner should've have included those covers in the package it would have been cheap and good buisness for this company to do that for it's customers . Unless you are handy with a sewing machine you will need to add an extra $100 bucks to your bill to purchace the covers

There were a couple more steps for installation and it's definitely a 2 person job, but we got it in the window last year and pulled it out for this winter no problem. Looking forward to using it again this summer.

Now the complaints: (1) The setup of the hoses and connectors to the outdoor area is a pain and the end result looks like a pre-school craft project. While the connectors to the unit are improved, connecting the hoses to the connectors is very difficult. They don't thread (no matter which way you turn them) and it was a very frustrating process that I had to set down and come back to a couple times.
