these switches are probably the best ones if you are on a budget. tbh they are really good stock but I wanted to go the extra mile and lube them myself and they sound even better even though they were kind already factory lubed. I 100% would recommend these.

I used this for my first keboard build

My usual budget recommendation is a plastic 60% case, DZ60 and a plate of your choice from KBDfans. Cherry screw-in stabilizers, Gateron Milky top Yellow switches and a cheap set of PBT keycaps from Aliexpress.

Recently, I have been doing research on building a keyboard for myself, but honestly I just don't know how to start, so I'm asking yall!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, both Cherry MX and Gateron browns came out at the bottom of the ranking by this measure. On top of that, some experiments I did with swapping in more tactile stems confirm that the brown switches also have relatively weak tactile leaf springs.

* plus: very sturdy tenting kit
* plus: very sturdy wrist pads
* minus: feels like a windows keyboard. it looks bulky, F keys are so far away. (I wish they just weren't there!)
* minus: horizontal stagger
* minus: no configuration options - can't change keycaps, can't change key switches. No layering, can't configure firmware.

I am a software engineer, not hardware. I am willing to pay for custom work.

1. Would it be possible to buy the soffle or lily or ergo dashwith sturdy tenting and wrist pads, like the like Kinesis Freestyle Edge? Also, what are the firmware configuration options for remapping the keys on those? 

2. Would it be possible to deconstruct an Apple Magic Keyboard and rebuild it into a split keyboard with wrist pads and tenting, like the kinesis freestyle edge?

a hot-swap board, as I do not wish to solder. Please only recommend in stock  
items, I do not wish to pay multiple of the original price from dealers, or  
wait months, as I am struggling with my current keyboard. From Europe. Any

Current keyboard: Microsoft Sidewinder X6 since  
like 2010. Currently I am trying out a Logitech K860, to see if it  
alleviates the pain, it is not that bad, however for me it is unnecessarily  
large, some keys are hard to reach, I do not really need a built in numpad  
etc, and therefore it is just too stretched out in some parts, also the  
build quality is while not that bad, not sure if it will last 5+ years.

Layout / form in mind: I do not necessarily have  
anything in mind yet, I am open to every layout or form, as long as it is  
ergonomic, comfortable. My only remark here is that I favour ANSI US layout  
when it comes to the layout, however really open to anything if it is  
learnable, useable, logical and means less stretching and reaching for  
weird buttons. 

Use case:daily programming on a Notebook  
and Desktop PC, \~12h+/day working / etc. in front of a computerI also play in my free  
time, browse and other casual stuff, but I am in front of the computer, laptop  
for many hours a day. Also my pains started after getting into  
programming, so maybe the keys I need to reach for, the lack of proper  
wrist rest and other factors may contribute to my problem. For years I  
had no issues whatsoever but now with the programming I spend even more  
time at the PC and also use more buttons, reach out more for symbols etc.  
After a programming session my left hand usually hurts, near my wrist. My  
right hand is fine so far.

Budget and location: Europe, no current budget  
so far, I just wish to prevent any further damage to my hands. I would say  
300-400 EUR as a budget, if less, then I am happy, but if I need to extend  
this budget for the sake of my hands do tell me please. Of course I do not

Hi all! After spending a few years with "regular" (100%) mechanical keyboards, I'm now looking for an ergonomic one because, well, it seems like the logical next step.

* *pre-existing conditions*: None. Sometimes a bit stiffness on the top of my hands (which could be from my mouse as it's predominantly on my right hand)
* *previous / current keyboards:* just your average 100% with MX Browns. I've had one with MX Blacks but sold that pretty quick, found them too heavy.
* *layout / form in mind:*
   * Split in two separate halves.
   * Not row-staggered.
   * Perhaps column-staggered.
   * Legs for tenting? Single-length or rotating, anything is fine.
   * At least the full alphabet with an additional number-row on top, and a row of modifiers on the outside sides, as well as something resembling a thumb cluster. I like my ANSI-left shift and ANSI-enter.
   * Perhaps a twisty button. Rotary encoder? Doesn't need to be near the thumbcluster, can also be on the ~~top left~~ (*edit: I want my ESC there)* or top right corner. Ideally, programmable in different modes/layers.
   * Perhaps an extra USB-port (passthrough) for my mouse's wireless nano-receiver. Can also be done with a simple USB-hub so no big deal.
   * Wired (anything between the two halves; if possible USB-micro to the PC as I have *tons* of those cables lying around).
   * LED-support would be nice (but is probably depending on the switches themselves?)
   * Any advice on how to combine different switches for different use cases (e.g. tactile for letters, linear for modifiers, I've read) ? I like the MX Browns but have trouble feeling when they actuate and sometimes think I bottom the keys out.

I am looking for a keyboard.

**Currently trying out**: I am trying a Kinesis Advantage2 but will return it to Amazon in the week or so and get something that looks cooler. I like it so far and am learning Dvorak on it (hoping I can keep things straight with Dvorak for ergo and Qwerty for flat).

**Use case**: no gaming - just a productivity / home office power user (12 hours a day of spreadsheets, presentations, writing emails, etc.).

* I use esc, F2, F3, and F4, but not others, so I definitely don't need a whole row of F keys.
* I use a lot of ctrl, alt, and shift keyboard shortcuts so hoping I can easily program these into my new board.
* I use arrow keys a lot
* When my company ends WFH, I will have to go back into the office, so I'd like something hot-swappable so I can put Silent Red switches in it for that setting.

**Budget & build experience:** budget up to about $400 (US) and zero mech keyboard build expertise (although I am very engineering-inclined).

**What I'm looking at:** Something like the Ergodox EZ, seems right, but I liked the cupped key clusters on the Kinesis. Are there any other boards I should be considering or should I pull the trigger on the Ergodox? Am I going to end up building a board in a few months anyways ;) ?

* Pre-existing conditions: some weird nervous issue which causes my fingers to sometimes twitch, and gets worse with frequent typing / mouse use. Neurologist advised to keep these to a minimum as the effect may get worse, but I can't avoid typing and mousing a lot at work.

* Current keyboard: I splurged a lot a few years ago to get a Filco Majestouch 2 with the brown switch, and it's been a lifesaver. However, I do still find myself sometimes wishing I could find one with an even softer touch.

* Layout/form in mind: I don't know anything about this, but I think the typical layout will do (Windows). Definitely with tenkey. Other ergonomic features are a big plus.

* Use case: (1~3 hours per day each)
 * essay writing
 * coding
 * gaming

* Budget/location: <400 USD, Sydney, Australia.



Basically due to my condition I'd like to use a keyboard that requires the minimum amount of force possible. From what I know it seems like this is a switch issue: a combination of the smallest peak force required and the smallest actuation distance. So I'm looking at the obvious choice of the Cherry Red, and maybe a capacitive switch?
That said, there is probably some very important aspect I am missing out on:
* Is there any other key consideration besides the smallest amount of force?
* Will the extreme of what I'm looking for requirement make typing very difficult?
* Is there and anything other than the switch that I should be optimising here?
* Specific recommendations always welcome.
* I know this is a mech subreddit, but I'm solution-agnostic. Chiclet and other types are fine too.
* Any place in a reasonable distance that I could try out the keyboard is obviously a top priority.

* Twinges in my right wrist mostly. In addition to my day job, I am also an artist who works on small artworks which require a lot of finger/wrist control, and I play bass/starcraft regularly so my right (dominant) wrist is triply stressed.
* Base of thumbs can get inflamed if I am not careful.
* My fingers are double jointed so if I'm not careful with curving my fingers, key presses can be hard on my top finger joint over time as the finger "flattens".
* Not a 'condition' but I am a woman with medium-large hands, so small-medium hands for a man.

**previous / current keyboards:**

* Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic. This was close to a perfect form factor for me, the negative tilt, tenting and wristrest all helped immensely. Never had wrist pain. However the mushy keys started to give me tenderness and discomfort in my finger joints over time so I switched to...
* Varmilo VA87 cherry brown + a large solid wood wrist rest. This was my primary keyboard. Very happy with it but I think lack of tenting made my wrist issue get worse after extensive use.
* Kinesis Advantage2. Been using this for about a week and up to 90% of previous speed. However the position of the thumb clusters is slightly too far for my thumbs, which naturally fall between N/M. And the position of the modifiers in the thumb clusters is not great for the many Ctrl/Shift/Alt/Win shortcuts I use. The wrist issue has improved but I can see my thumbs becoming inflamed over time, as the kb just feels slightly too big.

**layout / form in mind:** tenkeyless but I could see using layers to replace the Function row.

**use case:** Primary use case is writing but in a slightly technical environment, so I use special characters on a low to moderate frequency. Secondary use case is for design work, so a lot of modifier key combination shortcuts. Macro and remap support is very nice but not looking for anything super crazy in terms of layout.

I was looking into the Ergodox/Moonlander but I was concerned about the thumb reach on Ergodox, and lack of real tenting/negative tilt on Moonlander. There is a used Ergodox that I could buy, but would love to get recommendations for a better starting point.

The Dactyl looks great too (maybe not with gel wristrests) but I'm quite intimidated as I know almost nothing about kb's and would prefer to be able to purchase something fully built with nice build quality.

**Pre-existing conditions:** I've had two ulnar nerve transpositions (which fortunately helped), but for the past few years I've been having thumb pain which never got a solid diagnosis. More recently, I'm having index- & middle-finger pain which I suspect means carpal tunnel syndrome.

**Current setup:** MacBook Air, external monitor, & a crappy HP keyboard. A lot of my pain comes from clicking and dragging on my trackpad, so I've switched to an ergonomic mouse, but I'm not sure it's a great fit for my hand, and I still get pain from clicking/scrolling. I also know my desk is too high for a good wrist angle, so I plan to buy a dropdown tray ASAP.

**Layout:** Preferably split, tentable, and compact enough that I don't have to stretch to reach any keys (I have very small hands). I'm a writer, not a programmer, so I don't need a ton of function or number keys available. I'd love the ability to program keys for navigation, since much of my pain stems from mouse/trackpad work. 

**Use case:** Mostly writing & browsing, around ten hours a day. I type about 125 WPM and rather vigorously, so I'm not sure how that might influence what switches would be best for me.

**Budget:** Whatever it costs to be pain-free. Not sure I feel comfortable building something myself, but willing to consider it.

**Ideas so far:** I was initially interested in the Ergodox, but I read enough mentions of hard-to-reach keys that I decided it probably wouldn't work for my small hands. The Keyboard.io Model 01 seems like a great option but of course it's no longer being produced. I plan to keep an eye out for a used one, and I'm definitely interested in the Model 100, but I don't want my pain to get worse while I'm waiting. The Atreus looks solid, but it obviously isn't split, so I'm curious what people think about that as an alternative. Kinesis Freestyle Edge also seems popular, but I'd kinda like to try a columnar layout.

Layout/form in mind: I am thinking about a gergoplex-style 30% layout, but the only difference is a layer key on the bottom left and bottom right like where the bottom left and right keys would be on a Planck. I like these buttons because I can hit them with the karate-chop part of the base of my pinky without moving my fingers and I think I would like to put my two layer keys there on the right and left. 

Basically I'm thinking about a gergoplex/corne with two extra buttons on the bottom-outside-sides. Bonuses would be bluetooth and rgb-lighting. I am still qwerty but I am thinking of learning workman or something similar just to try it.

Use case: typing really fast, filling out spreadsheets in excel, writing emails and gaming

I know 30% keyboards are not usually suggested for gaming but I can make whole layers dedicated to different games if I need to and I think I can overcome that issue. 

Budget: as long as we're not breaking into $500 territory or something similarly ridiculous I'm cool. Thanks!

edit: Upon further research, I am really interested in getting a Corne Keyboard. The only thing I am still wondering about is if it is still possible to add those two extra buttons on the bottom left and bottom right corners. Perhaps I would need to get it 3-D printed custom and make a new pcb, but I was just wondering if anyone else had come up with this idea. 

I currently have a pretty tall artisan keycap on that switch to make it easier to hit with the side of my hand and I really like it.

I really like the idea of having a linear encoder as a dedicated volume control but not dead set on it. I'd also ideally like to have some tenting options, but figure I can do that myself if need be.
I got started down this rabbit hole looking at the ergodox ez and the moonlander, still considering the moonlander but been intrigued by things like the redox, lily, sofle, and iris.

Gimmicks make me very happy, my K8 is awful to type on, but wireless connectivity to 3 devices and RGB keep the smiles going

I posted here a little over a month ago and in complete denial of the device given, ended up ordering an Ergodox EZ. I've had it for about a week and I've spent most of that time shopping for another keyboard. But not because the Ergodox is bad! I made the right decision with the information I had, and I think this was the perfect introduction to split/ortho/ergo keyboards. NOW I understand a lot more about this subgenre and have a better idea of what I want. 

I love split, I love ortho, and I am excitedly learning Colemak-DH, but the Ergodox is too big, has too many keys, and the included cable setup is a mess. Tenting seems to be more trouble than it's worth. Also, it's not a particularly... attractive keyboard. Very 90s middle school computer lab.

In the short term, I plan to keep toying with my keymap and learning the new layout. I think an Atreus is in my near future (a recent desk chair upgrade made it apparent that even a gentle split does a lot) and a Sofle or Lily58 in the slightly more distant future. Maybe a Corne eventually, but we'll see if I ever get that bold. Somewhere along the line, my Ergodox will probably find its way to the mech market...

Anyways, thanks for welcoming me to this weird, weird hobby. Y'all are bizarre and I love it.

Pre-existing conditions : None. Just trying to get something more ergonomic than the standard keyboard.

Current Keyboard : Leopold FC660M with Cherry Red switches.

Layout/Form: Something split with linear switches that are more quiet than the MX Reds I have right now. Ideally something with an encoder too.

I am considering one of the Lily58 variants, but it seems to be sold out in a lot of stores.

Use case: Home use only, mainly for productivity but with a side of games.

Location: Canada
