New user, posting my setup. I'm not a dealer, just a long time vinyl collector. Let me know if anyone has questions or comments on my setup. I've got a weekly YouTube channel but I thought I'd start out by sharing my setup first :)

In the end, I decided on the Fluance RT85 because of a couple of items. I was looking to start a bit cheaper, but the Blue 2M cartridge that came on the Fluance was the deciding factor and I am so glad I went this route. The other reasons were the acrylic platter and the physical switch for the 33/45 instead of having to switch the belt like in many similar priced turntables.

So, I am here to confess that after a lot of back and forth, I am pretty confident that I'm going with a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO. I'd like to credit u/sharkamino for all of his help. I did some more research and digging. 

I need to get to my local HiFi store. They're basically down to the P1 and the Evo. 

Now, I'm moving on to pre-amps/integrated receivers. 

Down the rabbit hole I go!

Turntable decision

The best bargain at this price is the Fluance RT85. It comes with an Ortofon 2M Blue, which has a superior stylus compared to what’s on any of these others (nude tip rather than bonded).

I seem to alway find myself in this position when I go and try and buy something I save up for, I save for one thing but once I have the money I find 10 other different options I want. I have about $500 and I’m trying to buy a new turntable. I was saving for the pro- ject debut carbon evo, and I was dead set. 

But then I was playing with an AT-LPW50PB and I thought it was pretty good and I could save some money buying this for a preamp. I’ve heard the motors on these could be a little noisy but I didn’t hear anything with the one I was using.

The agony of trying to buy something new

 There's a lot of slack in the lever, it bounces the arm if you lift it too quickly and the tonearm safety latch feels like its going to break off every time I use it.  My last turntable was a Pro-ject Essential III and even though the body of this Fluance is much more substantial, the entire experience of lowering the needle with the tonearm lever on the Pro-ject was more solid and satisfying, whereas the RT85 feels flimsy and crappy.  The Ortofon 2m Blue looks cool, but to be honest, for a $250 cartridge it doesn't really sound much better to me than the OM10 on my Pro-ject, which didn't sound much better to me than the ADC QLM32 Mrk III on my Hitachi HT-324 from the 80s. I told you I'm not an audiophile

I am not an audiophile, just a guy who likes to listen to records. I bought the white Fluance RT85 because of the positive reviews and because it looked cool with its acrylic platter, etc. I have owned many different turntables and record players over the years, but this one is the most expensive.  Overall it's an okay turntable, but that's probably as far as I would go with it

 Colored vinyl really pops on the white, though the visual aesthetic proves more impressive than actually using it.  The entire tonearm mechanism feels super cheap. The tonearm lever, stand and safety latch actually feels like something you'd find on a cheapo plastic portable record player like a Crosley. Maybe I got a bad one, but that's my honest opinion

 The three rubber isolation feet are easy to adjust and have kept the plinth true. The solid acrylic platter adds a sense of heft and sturdiness. I always use a platter weight as well and the FLUANCE offering does a fine job. The smoked acrylic dust cover is what you'd expect

 The new Bamboo veneer, (Available as of May 22, 2021) is matte, clean and elegant which provides a nice contrast amid the brown, black and silver quagmire of modern Hi-Fi. The Ortofon 2M Blue Cartridge is all it's cracked up to be. The hype is real, as is the delivery of beautiful sound reproduction. I appreciate some of the details in the design such as being able to lock the "S" shaped tone arm in its cradle even if the stylus lever is in the raised position

First things first, the sound quality is a substantial upgrade from the RT82 by FLUANCE that I had purchased only a year prior. In fact it's the best sounding turntable for beginners I've ever heard. Not that I've traveled the world in search of turntable nirvana mind you. However I've seen my fair share amongst others in this price category and I'm highly impressed by the RT85's Value For Money

Amazon was also great about sending it back for a replacement but after setting it up properly, leveling it and installing the upgrades, I wasn't willing to do that but Rega was great about the dust cover!  I guess the point is, you need to do the upgrades mentioned to get the TT to spin properly. It does sound great with the Ortofon blue but the Audio Technica was dead nutz at 33

 I guess I was expecting too much but now I have a TT that sounds great and functions well. So, do the math it's now well over $1000. Maybe I'll upgrade the tone arm next. Just s thought because once you get the bug, you just have to keep scratching that itch to the path of perfection

The haste is what makes this good potentially although 7 mana is still a lot for White/Red. Feels like a Planar Chaos card a bit but it's cool they are exploring new design space for White/Red.

Everyone who’s listened to my Dentons or Lintons comes away impressed; more consistently than any others I’ve had. But we’re talking your ears, your taste

OK, great amp and speakers. Have those myself. Not sure you need the DAC as you’ll discover the Audiolab’s DAC is pretty good, but as everybody but me seems to be convinced that an external DAC is the passport to audiophile pleasure and credibility, we’ll let that pass for the moment.

 But I love the Dentons and next to the Lintons, my main speakers, they stand up really well. Eventually they’ll be the rear speakers for my own version of surround, and the mains for my mono system (which you’ll realise will be at the other end of the room).

I don’t find the Dentons too shrill, but I’m 65 so I guess I don’t hear as much up there as younger ones do.  Nonetheless, I’m going to implement the “proven” solution of replacing one of each speaker’s link strips with a 1-ohm 5 watt resistor to balance the sound a little better. But I love the Dentons and next to the Lintons, my main speakers, they stand up really well. Eventually they’ll be the rear speakers for my own version of surround, and the mains for my mono system (which you’ll realise will be at the other end of the room)

I have the AT LP120X - I assume yours is the older, non”x” model which is better built but has sound issues with the phono preamp, even when theoretically bypassed. However, I only have it for 78s. It does OK on LPs but compared directly with my aged Thorens TD160 it’s some way short. I also have a Rega Planar 2 for mono LPs (remember the mono system?). That’s a significant upgrade over the AT120, old model or new, but cheaper than the Planar 3 and, critically, less upgradeable. The 3 is a potential money pit as you can upgrade it to the full Planar 6 spec. I find the 2 is pretty good and luckily I caught an ex-demo one at around 25% off. Plenty of other options, though, so worth checking some out. I tend to favour belt-drive, and the Rega being UK-made was a plus for me.

I’d had the Audiolab amp for about a year before I realised it has no tone controls. I just never use them. Hence my interest in the speaker fix above. The resistors are on the slow boat from China, but I’ll report on that as soon as they arrive. The process comes up in one of the Denton reviews. I bought the Dentons on spec during the lockdown and have been well impressed. They improved after about 50-100 hours proper playing, as far as I can estimate, so if yours are still new I’d give them a good running in before you move them on.

Overall, I would./Could buy a better turn table in this price range

Good Turntable, but can be better

 If you can't do that, some phono stages and receivers or separate phono stages have what's called a subsonic filter. That allows you to reduce any chance of feedback by engaging that. If you have that issue, check to see if you have one of those. If you found this video helpful, please like it and subscribe to our channel

 But if your speakers produce decent bass, you could get acoustic feedback if it's too close. So try to keep your turntable on a different shelf from your speakers and at least five to six feet away from your speakers if possible. If you can't do that, some phono stages and receivers or separate phono stages have what's called a subsonic filter. That allows you to reduce any chance of feedback by engaging that

 First, we think it's best to go ahead and make the audio and power connections before you balance and set up the turntable.
