The Everest 1045K Basic is about as simple as a pack can be. With only one large compartment and a small front utility pouch, this bag doesn't have a lot going on. That being said, sometimes a small, lightweight bag is all you really want or need. Big enough to fit a laptop, a few notebooks, pens, pencils, and your phone, this bare-bones option has room for all your essentials but not much else. We were surprised by how well this pack could shoulder heavier weight with no back padding and narrow shoulder straps. That being said, we wouldn't want to carry heavy loads for extended periods.
When it comes down to it, this is a small bag with minimal padding. If that's what you are looking for, this bag is great, especially for the price. If you want something that can hold every last thing you may or may not need, this bag might be underwhelming. It's ideal for a first school budget backpack for young children and would also serve adults in carrying their essentials for a trip to the coffee shop.

 They are positioned lower so when you are hunched over the handle bar the blinkers should be more visible than it was on the Velocity where the slots were located near the top of the bag. You could also attach your u-lock using these slots.  Interior compartments of various sizes to store the essentials: flat tire kit; wallet; phone…  Velocity lacked compartments -- it only had one small pouch inside. Commuter has a padded laptop compartment (do people still carry around laptops these days, though?), and a zipped, large pouch, inside which contain four more smaller pockets for your smart phone, keys, and what not

 I owned the Velocity for over two years before switching to this newer model back in May of 2016. Commuter City has improved on the Velocity in all the right areas.  Note: I purchased this for $112.00

 I would have to fiddle with getting things in, make sure nothing is hanging out or falling out then quickly zip it up. I would have preferred a more traditional horizontal zipper so I can simply drop things in.  Visibility  The three colors the bag is available in are all dark, and it lacks big reflective patches -- the small Ortlieb logo (2" across) located at bottom right is the only reflective material.  Overall this bag does many important things right for a daily bike commuter

  Note: I purchased this for $112.00.  Pros:  Waterproof  This is important for bike commuting in Seattle (it rains a lot here in fall and winter). This bag passes the water proof test easily -- the shell is polyester lined with a waterproof membrane

Great commuting backpack

They did away with the thick padded straps in favor of thinner, lighter straps that help to keep your shoulders cooler, and they are wide so they sit comfortably on your shoulders.

While it's good to have an exterior pocket, the vertical orientation of the zipper is not ideal. The vertical slit makes it more cumbersome to deposit items like my keycard and keys, since they have a tendency to just slide back out. This was the biggest drawback on the Velocity -- the closing strap was velcro. The problem being over time the stickiness of the velcro wore off to the point where it would not even hold the bag closed -- especially if it was full. That has been updated to a stainless steel buckle hook that you slide in to one of the three notches. Easy, quick, secure, and it will last

Great daily commuter backpack

  In terms of commuting I would note, I wear a size 12/13 shoe and as it turns out that is too wide to stack shoes horizontally at the bottom of the backpack so to truly use the bag as intended I suspect the storage space is constrained vs. what someone with a slightly smaller foot would experience - which could be an issue for large footed people who wear conventional business casual attire and plan to commute using this backpack.

  Shoulders straps feel comfortable.  Only 4 stars because the sternam stram does not lock into the shoulders straps.  They easily can fall out.  I ended up using some small zip ties to ensure they stay on when I take the bag off

This is my first Ortlieb bag that I purchased for commuting to work on my bike.  Big plus is the insert with small pockets organized with a zipper.  Also, this bag has a slot for your lap top as well.  Great look and it accomodates clipping lights on the outside pack easily with the multiple slots
