  Yes if you do the math this wasn’t that expensive per meal etc. but I like to buy something I can count on to work long term, even if it costs a little more.  Lots of people love this, and that’s great. I can tell you that after 4 years with mine, it definitely resembles what you expect from an opening price point brand (only, that’s not the price they are charging)

  I just can’t fathom a Hamilton Beach slow cooker for $70-80. I believe this was in the $45-50 range when I purchased four years ago and I thought that was steep, looks like all slow cookers have increased tremendously in price.  So after about 5 hours, I took the lid off and let it cook on high. This did the trick. The watery sauce began to change into the thicker sauce I wanted. After this, I returned the lid and put the pork on low for another 1 hour and again removed the lid for the final hour

The Jury is still out

 The silicone ring on the lid starts off pretty tacky and can be tricky to seat. After the first couple times using it though, that wears off and works great, creating a nice seal. The biggest annoyance for me is the beeps when turning it on or adjusting settings is a bit obnoxious and can't be disabled. Overall though, it cooks like a crock pot should (low and slow) and has held up so I recommend this one!

 It did give off some smell from the manufacturing oil and maybe the silicone for the first two batches but then stopped completely after that. The high setting test resulted in a reading of 210 at the end of 4 hours and the low test came out to 195 at the end of 8. This doesn't just blast the temperature right away and boil the whole time like some of the competing brands have started doing I guess for safety reasons. I like that this unit still comes with a heavy removable crock which makes cleanup easy

 She complained that all of her recipes no longer worked as everything was cooking way too hot/fast, even on low. I bought her one of these and she is now happy again as things are back to how they were. An 8 hour on low roast recipe can go the full time and be at that 190 mark at the end with most of the time spent in the sweet spot. Because I remember mine giving off quite a smell when it was new, I washed this new one out thoroughly and then ran three batches of just water filled a little over halfway up

 The inner crock is heavy, but it's the nature of the beast, as is the fact that the exterior gets hot when you are cooking. It is clumsy to wash in the sink, but the addition of cooking bags made for this size and type of cooker simplifies the cleaning enough to make it worth it. It is big, so consider where you will store it before buying. I can't stand appliances I'm not using sitting on my countertops, so that was an issue for me

 I have used several recipes that give 6-8 hour cooking times and have cut the time in half with great success. Tough cuts of meat still came out falling apart tender. I should pass on the hint that I picked up about high temps and avoiding burned food: If you put a raft of onion or celery in the bottom bag and rest the meat on it, it will give extra flavor as well as protecting meat from burning or sticking to the bag. The design of the lid could be better

 I feel using the cooking bags help with my peace of mind, as well as with cleanup. The wire clamps to secure the crock for travel seem like they would work fine, but I don't travel with food, so I have only found them a bit annoying because they don't fold completely away from the side of the crock and you cannot use them while cooking. Another model is probably the same, but without the clamps. I was just overwhelmed with all the reading I did and picked this one without considering that I might not want the clamps

 The face of it is already starting to come off. The crock insert is much harder to clean than the original so they definitely changed the finish on that as well.

Cheaply Made

A long time user of Hamilton Beach slow cookers, I thought the addition of a thermometer would be a nice improvement to the devices.  I was wrong.  The ability to track the inner temperature of my meats make cooking so much easier.  In the two months after receiving the Temp Tracker, I've used it three times

I've made chili, a pork roast, and beef ribs, in each case everything turned out perfect, in the cases of the roast and ribs, the thermometer indicated my cooking was done far sooner than the old fill and forget method of using slow cookers.

The ceramic crock: nice and heavy.  So many slow cookers seem to be scrimping on the crocks these days.  This one is heavy duty and exceedingly easy to clean (and I highly recommend using slow cooker bags to eas on the cleanup)

 I did not like the control panel that is a soft push button plastic material that will wear away real fast. I think the price point is a bit high for the quality of the product.

(Since then I have found other blogs with other recipes: Get Crocked and 365 days of slow cooking for example but a year of slow cooking is still my favorite.) The recipe problem solved, I started cooking using my small, old, and very basic crockpot. And that crockpot was doable but some recipes call for cooking on low for 9 hours; others for 6 and really all I want is to throw the ingredients into the crockpot and forget about it

I love this crockpot

 To confirm temperature, time setting. & turn off power, you must PUSH IN the same knob you use for control settings. Made a roast on low & it turned out very moist and delicious. There was no boiling like my old crockpot and the roast was fully cooked to my liking in 7 hrs
