 They aren't a leather material, but I've been happy with all my stuff from them (also have the flat toiletries bag and pack it cubes). High-quality zippers, easy to clean material, and lots of thoughtful and adjustable internal storage.

Made in Toronto apparently too, which is a plus, does anyone have any experience with Roots’ leather goods so far as durability? 
As always, reccomendations appreciated. I’m open to all sizes, I’d like the outer material to be weather/waterproof, lots of internal pockets/storage options + some external pockets would be appreciated as well. Bonus points for ethical production/labour, Canadian companies.

Weekender bag reccomendations! Opinions on Roots’ bags…

 I therefore ended up returning the bag, and deducted two stars from what would have been a 5 star rating.  Two other comments which did not go into my rating. - Although the bag is sized to meet airline carry-on requirements, the side compression straps do not fully compress the top compartment. As a result, if you fill up that compartment you will likely exceed the 9" depth requirement

 Without those fixes I do not recommend purchasing this bag unless you know your total weight will be light or if you are comfortable carrying large heavy weights with just your shoulders.

 However, that holder does not provide sufficient support for a typical .5 liter water bottle so it was useless  If eBags would enhance the waist strap and strengthen the sternum straps I would gladly purchase this again. Without those fixes I do not recommend purchasing this bag unless you know your total weight will be light or if you are comfortable carrying large heavy weights with just your shoulders.

  Unfortunately, in actual use the bag failed me in two critical places: 1. The waist strap provides no weight support at all (as any good hiking backpack would) 2. The sternum strap is only attached with a compressed metal fitting that pulled off during my first use.  As a result of these two deficiencies, all the weight of the bag ends up on your shoulders, so it is not usable carrying any significant weight -- e

Innovative flexible bag -- but not good for carying significant weight

 Comfort-wise, this bag is not as comfortable as a true backpacking backpack, but I don't think its reasonable to expect that and to have the flexibility this bag provides as a piece of true luggage. It's a trade off, and well worth it. Having hands free on a long trip was a godsend, and the lack of retractable handle-associated hardware really frees up a lot of space inside the bag, in comparison to a roll-aboard style carry-on. Imagine navigating international airports with two little ones and the associated toileting/diapering/eating

 I love efficiency packing, and the challenge of packing for a 2 week trip in only carry on bags is actually my idea of a good time. Using packing cubes, I was able to do that without an issue. Had the weather been remotely normal for August in France, I would have been golden.

How I packed for 2 weeks for myself and 2 small children in a carry-on bag.

  #2: I'm also not very fond of the waist strap (which you can't see in the picture above), which is just a strip of unpadded nylon. If you tighten it enough to actually make a difference in how you're carrying the load, then it gouges into your waist and feels very uncomfortable. 4 out of 5: Mostly very nice, BUT...

At the current price, its a fine small duffel bag at about an effective 20 liters; its capacity is smaller than the specs would lead one to believe.   It might be a fine overnight bag for a small child or a petite person but I would not recommend that use for a large adult unless its for very light weight summer clothes — shorts, T-shirts, a pair of sandals & very small toiletry kit.

A Nice Small, "Under Seat” Duffel Bag

 I have been very underwhelmed by the design of the laptop pocket though. I don't think the padding is sufficient to actually protect the laptop and it is kind of hard to slide a laptop in and out of the bag when it is full. A flap in the pocket actually ripped on first use because of this. Otherwise, the backpack does everything as advertised and has served me well

Great bag with a few minor flaws

This is the second of these exact same bags that I am purchasing, so that alone should tell you I love it! There are many alternative bags in this class and not one suits me as well. I have read many of the other reviews and I won't repeat all the good things they say, except to say they are all true! So ironically, in this 5 star review, I will talk about the things I don't like, and yes, there are a few. Note though that despite these things, I still think it is the best bag going FOR ITS PURPOSE and that is why I am getting another one. So here goes: 1) The bottom plastic clips where the shoulder straps clip onto the bag are too flimsy for the weight this bag can carry, and broke early in the life of the bag

The dimensions are technically a carry-on size however it has been denied twice as a carry-on, even without the expansion. In addition, I have used this bag three times and the front pocket interior is torn where you can see the inside of the bag. Also, the zippers are very hard to open and close, and often get stuck. I do love the large capacity of the bag and the different pockets, unfortunately, it doesn't seem built to withstand being tossed around as checked luggage and since it is not allowed as a carry-on, I doubt it will last

 I'm limited now to using this back for car travels. Considering the price, I would have been better off purchasing a regular carry-on suitcase. I hate that I was unable to return this bag in time for a refund.

Torn after three uses - Not a carry-on

 My only two concerns are the hide away drink holder and the backpack strap attachments. I havent used the drink holder, so I really can't say too much, but I do question how long it will hold up before it tears or becomes unusable. My biggest concern is where the bottom of the backpack straps attach to the bag itself, see pictures. For some reason both of these are plastic
