 It is just not the most sturdy bag ever. It says that it is for a laptop and while it will hold it I would for sure not carry it with only one strap over one shoulder as I am not certain it is sturdy enough to do this without ripping. Honestly, I have a 15' laptop so I won't use it for my laptop again as I don't trust the strength but if you have a very small laptop it may work. The quality of construction on this one is a tad bit lacking to categorize it as a laptop backpack, but if you are just headed out for a hike, or the zoo or an excursion and just need a couple things, it will be perfect

 Here, that's actually a separate compartment and you may have been able to see inside you kind of got this bunched up fabric at the bottom. This you can show you that, and part of that is because how this bottom work. So it's it's separating the this bottom here and you know this is a decent spot. If you carry an extra pair of shoes with you, maybe it's wintertime

 There'S a little bit of dimension built in but probably better for flatter items, maybe a small notebook and then inside. If you can see, there's another little divider. So let's say you have maybe some tech stuff or your pens in the divider and then your notebook or other things in the front also could be a good spot to toss. You know wallet and keys, so there is that we always like a quick access pocket on one side

This seems pretty solid for the UK. You can't get a better inflatable pad for £100, so I wouldnt spend any more money there unless you want to start chopping ccf pads in half. I went for a lanshan 2p tent for £150, and it's less than half the weight of your tent -- takes 600 g off your share of the tent weight, which is more than you get swapping pads or pack. I know you like your 3p tent but wanted to point out that will be the easiest place to cut weight

**Location/temp range/specific trip description:** This gear list is for 3-season hiking in England / Wales (mild, wet climates). Generally, I hike for 2 days, 3 nights.

**Goal Baseweight (BPW):** as low as possible.

**Budget:** Most items already bought, still need pack and sleeping pad. Budget = $200 for pack, $100 for pad.

**Non-negotiable Items:** Sleeping mask, Umbrella (for use at camp to smoke my jazz cabbage under), Sealskinz, My food weight.

**Solo or with another person?:** With my girlfriend.

**Additional Information:** I cannot reliably set up tarp / hammock systems.

Gold stars = items I have not purchased yet, but are the ones I am looking at / interested in.

I am a heavy weightlifter so need a lot of food.

Shakedown Request for England/Wales Hikes

 Hello Exped! Fully loaded w/bearcan, 4 days food & 3L water was max of 33 lbs. This pack carried it perfectly. Muir Ranch to Whitney w/no resupply required ~ 40lbs on day 1 for full load w/water . Again this pack rocked! The suspension system efficiently transfers the load to the waist belt and off my shoulders

 A broken & frayed strap after 3 mos in the woods is not acceptable. 3. (not really a "ding" more of an observation).

Bought this for a Sept '14, +30 day John Muir Trail & Hetch Hetchy hike. I have serious neck issues (severe arthritis, fused & fractured vertebrae) so I looked high and low for a lightweight pack that doesn't skimp on suspension & waist belt. Hello Exped! Excellent minimalist pack w/superior suspension

Exped’s “T-Rex” suspension system sounds a bit strange but is an amazing feature that contributes to the comfort of this backpack.  This system has two main features – breathability and load transfer to the body. The Lightning has very minimal body contact points which means the ventilation is astounding.

There is nothing as uncomfortable as hiking in hot weather and having a backpack stick to a clammy back. The suspension system on this bag remedies that issue. Secondly, while the minimal back contact sounds like it would be less comfortable in terms of weight-bearing, it actually is far healthier for the back.

Secondly, if you use compression straps very often or are in the habit of really cinching straps down extremely tight, you’ll likely see wear here too. This is more of a user error as abusing the straps will of course result in damage, but it’s still something to keep in mind if you tend to do this with other backpacks.
