If you're looking for a handheld vacuum that offers HEPA-level filtration, you could look at the Dyson Humdinger. This high-end handheld vacuum is effective at sealing fine particles as you clean, which is good if you suffer from allergies. It performs superbly on flat, even surfaces like tabletops or shelves and does a very good job clearing away debris on low- and high-pile rugs and carpets. The Numatic Henry Compact HVR160 would be my suggestion as well, which is a semi-commercial canister made in the UK that's perfectly suited for hard floors and area rugs. They're among the most powerful non-central vacuums out there, so it'll basically be like a significantly less bulky and better filtering version of your shop vac. I think it'd be worth getting an attachment like this that you can easily lift up for large debris as well.

It offers a maximum of roughly half an hour of continuous runtime on a single charge, which should be more than sufficient for most spot-cleaning tasks. You can increase its suction power for dealing with especially stubborn messes by using the 'MAX' suction switch, though running it in this power mode decreases its battery life to just roughly 10 minutes.

First impressions are good. Suction is good, pretty compact but not small, cord works well, its heavier then it looks but manageable, useful tools, and price wise I think it's worth it (paid$340 w/tax) although a lower price point would make it a much better buy. Tools friction fit together, hose is long enough and flexible, floortool is good on hardwood but takes more effort on rugs, I think it's relatively quiet with no high pitched whistle, and it rolls around easy. These are just my initial impressions, will update if warranted

I primarily used it as a handheld vac. The Humdinger does not have the same power, the crevice nozzle has an inferior design and it is difficult to empty. I have to use tweezers or a knife to remove debris. Quite disappointed

It could easily be a lifetime appliance. What I love about it: Tremendous suction Clean exhaust air. I’ve had other HEPA vacuums, this one is worlds cleaner. Quiet

I’ve gone through quite a variety of handheld vacs over the years for cleaning Golden Retriever hair from carpeted steps. They all sucked- until they didn’t! Annoying cords, smelly filters, and impossible to change belts made we dread this chore! They were bulky and loud too! I LOVE how the head of the tool pivots so I don’t have to do advanced yoga moves on the stairs in order to switch between the horizontal and vertical surfaces! Thank you, Dyson! While your products are expensive and the sticker shock has made me avoid your products in the past, I now understand that you really do get what you pay for! I’m a convert!!!

In that case, I'd say to get a $330 Henry HVR160 with a $45 Wessel Werk TK286 turbine. It's hard to imagine who would throw down $300 on a handheld vacuum when spending a dash more can buy you a far more versatile Dyson.
