My honest opinion, don’t buy cheap you’ll just regret it, buy a decent real that functions good so he can get the idea of it, cheap ones don’t work well and the learning curve will be that much harder and he’ll just end up not liking it because he will get frustrated with it. I’ve worked at a store for about 10 years now selling equipment that’s the best advise I tell to people, not saying buy the most expensive but don’t buy cheap. Shimano slx, is a very good starter but it’s on the more expensive side.
