Crucial MX500 vs ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro

I have over 2,000 hours of operation at the time of this writing on a 4 disk array of these in a hardware RAID 5 on a MegaRAID 9361-8i controller. On the plus side this has partial power loss protection and RAIN protections and it looks like it covers what it needs to while the controller with RAID controller BBU covers the rest. They are also really fast and especially in a 4 disk RAID the performance is quite impressive. One thing I am finding out is hardware RAID tends not to support TRIM

For best results, make sure your target and destination drives are exactly the same capacity, skip the frustrating and buggy Acronis software entirely and download something like Macrium Reflect. Not only is it also free, but it actually works and is not entirely impossible to figure out. The hour+ I spent with steam coming out of my ears trying to get Acronis to do anything at all was wasted time. Macrium installed in a few minutes and in less than 10 minutes of tinkering and reading their online help pages, I was cloning my old drive to my new drive

Plus, my experience with their RMA process hasn't given me any additional confidence. RMA processes are notoriously painful, but ADATA's website, at the time of writing, is basically non-functional for RMA's. I started multiple cases and got case numbers, but never got an e-mail about them, nor would they show up in their buried lookup tool. I eventually called their US number, at which some clueless dude thought that my e-mail alias for the RMA with "adata" in it constituted some sort of trademark infringement (it doesn't; that's not how that works!), but did actually send the paperwork over

I wish I'd done it years ago! The hardest part was my failing eyes trying to screw the drive caddy to the new drive. If you can follow simple instructions and a desire to keep your old laptop instead of buying a new one then this is for you BUY IT! The only snag I ran into was my laptop not "seeing" the drive when I plugged it in. It took a while, some reboots, checking my BIOS settings and some Googling, but it was eventually recognized. Honestly, i think i should have just been patient when i initially plugged it in for cloning and waited an hour or so for it to be recognized

I have been using Crucial SSDs since 2010. After getting my first one, I never went with a different brand unless there was some unavoidable reason. Crucial has consistently delivered me quality products with excellent performance and longevity. To this day, I still use my first SSD from them and it works just as well as the day I got it

First of all the software works only with Windows. If you're running Ubuntu Linux like I do, I guess they don't want to do business with you. Then when it's time to download "Acronis True Image" for your Windows 10 installation because you bought it with the SSD, you find their instructions are plenty wonky. They ask for a validation code that just doesn't come with the SSD, saying that it's on the sticker adhered to the product

Update (11 Feb 18): I'm not sure whether it is the drive or the solution provided by Crucial in the comments to this review, but I now have a working SSD on my troublesome Windows 10 machine. I followed the suggestion to turn off "Secure Boot" for the clone to see what would happened. I cloned my Win10 HD to aMicron 1100 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-inch MTFDDAK2T0TBN-1AR1ZABYY using Macrium Reflect (rather than Acronis) with Secure Boot disabled

Short note? Not suitable for low clearance connections, check your hardware first prior to installation or purchase. Other than that the drives performed as advertised.

I bought two of these. This first review is for the 500GB SSD. My review for the 1TB drive is below. This serves two purposes for me

They get replaced because you just need more storage space. XPG does not have such a great reputation in this respect. If you are provisioning your main computer drive (boot/Windows), paying a premium for Samsung is worth it in every case. XPG SX8200 is better suited for temporary/unimportant fast storage needs, such as games, media scratch, program scratch, etc
