At first glance the Tailbone fixed blade outdoor knife passes as an ordinary neck knife with a paracord-wrapped handle. But in hand, it comes to life. The machine chain handle moves for superb ergonomics but remains perfectly rigid when cutting or slicing. It’s highly usable and perfectly unexpected.

In our world biomimicry—designs inspired by the natural world—are everywhere. T.J. Schwarz of Boise, Idaho borrowed the concept when he designed a fixed blade knife handle after a fish’s spine. Never one to shy away from a bold new idea, T.J. created the Tailbone with a simple stonewashed drop point blade and a handle that blows convention out of the water. The flexible handle moves vertically, conforming to your grip, or to your chest when it’s worn as a neck knife without allowing any horizontal play. This is a tj schwartz design and i love the fact that after i got the email with the 2021 new stuff from crkt, i saw on youtube really quick about tj talking about the handle and why he did that. It'S weird as heck, and that's what crkt does best that's the thing that makes crkt different from the other companies making things in a lot of similar overseas factories right. They are doing weird stuff from good designers and it shows we end up with things that are like this

 Well, i i am pretty impressed with that choice. That was that was well done um, but, more importantly, it ends up being very carriable right. Let'S imagine that we take this guy off of the uh, the lanyard for a second here and uh come on there. We go take this guy off the landing for a second here, and then you put this guy, for instance, on your belt, or something like that

 Next thing the sheath on this guy is fine. It'S a little um. It'S a thermoplastic-y sort of affair, but it actually has pretty good um positive retention kind of clicks in there and it it definitely takes a little bit of doing to get this out of here i mean you can no problem, but it definitely is not one of Those sheets where you're gon na have the knife come flying out on some random base. Now this is a this sheath is absolutely right there, and so i appreciate that very much next thing, um and by the way the sheath comes with both a um, a little belt, clip that we'll talk about a little later, as well as a chunk of the Some kind of quarter or another which you can put around your uh around your neck or any other place that you'd like and have it, leave it hanging in there, and this is something that is securely enough in there that i think you can hang

 The steel is a little bit below par and the clip is assuming a very small belt, but at the same time i really i i think this is cool right um. Is it something that i'm gon na be like? Oh, my god, i'm carrying this every day. No not not remotely right, i'm not a small, fixed blade sort of person generally speaking, but i really do hope that we see more variants of this idea, because i think it is really interesting right, more variants of this with better steels in the future. That could be really interesting opening it up to other audiences, but mostly, i think it's neat that they went there right

 Your Spyderco Delica, your cut jacks, your Rant series. I mean, $115 is a nontrivial amount of money. But the thing is, fundamentally, if you want the lightweight, if you are looking for the lightest knife possible that still is a very, very good knife, then this is a really, really strong contender because you have an incredible blade in a body that is just absolutely freaking featherweight. So if you're willing to pay a price, both literally and figuratively for it, then honestly, this is a really nice little knife

 But the thing is, fundamentally, if you want the lightweight, if you are looking for the lightest knife possible that still is a very, very good knife, then this is a really, really strong contender because you have an incredible blade in a body that is just absolutely freaking featherweight.  Very often a shallow deep carry clip with screws on the inside can just get caught up on your pants, but no, this carries deeply, and so that's nice. Big fan of that. Next thing, this has anodized thumb stud. Let's see here, this nice little blue here, which matches, and then the standoffs are anodized blue as well, and that's just nice

 I love this blade so damn much. But you're getting it in a very, very thin package with good utility, and the weight of this is what most knives weigh on the lock scale alone. I mean, and so at that level, I love this knife. It is absolutely a specialist, and I appreciate their willingness to make a knife that is targeting lightweight over all else, because in a world that is awash with awkward generalists or crazy overbuilt thick titanium frame locks, sometimes it's nice to see something that is really specializing and that is specializing very well

 Hey everybody, Nick here and today I got a review for you of this very interesting, very

 This is an interesting little mid-year release for Benchmade, there was very little warning

 And so you can see here that in terms of blade length, we're right around the same area.

 Ontario Rat No. 2 and the Rat No. 1, beautiful.

 And I think that'll do it for size comparison.

 I've had a couple of people who've seen it on Instagram ask, Nick, what's a bugout even

 Well, if you, in the preparedness community, there is the idea of a bugout bag, or bugging

 out, which means there has been a disaster in the area where I live or am.

 A bugout bag should contain everything that you need to be able to go someplace else and

 exist and survive there for a little while there.

 So I think they're targeting that community here, although that's kind of a weird knife

 So either way, that's what the name means.

 Although I'd love to see a whole line of these, the bugout, the bugacross, bugunder, bug

 plus preposition lineup, could be great, Benchmade can use that idea.

 Anyways, let's go ahead and jump into the good, the great, the bad, and the ugly of

 First off, this has a very nice lanyard hole.

 It's a weird thing to say at some level, but in this case, the lanyard hole is nicely designed.

 It's not stealing space from anything or moving the clip to a place it shouldn't be.

 This is about as good as a lanyard hole on a production sort of knife gets, and it shows

 signs of being something they thought about rather than, eh, we'll just drill a hole.

 Next thing, the clip on this guy is actually pretty great.

 I think it's smaller than anything else I've seen on a Benchmade, but the thing is, there

 are mounts on either side, and coupled with the axis lock makes this knife completely

 ambidextrous, and because this is a relatively lightweight and long knife, this keeps it

 I have no real concerns about this clip, and in fact, I found it very nice to use, and

 I'll also highlight the height of it, which allows this to actually be a deep carry clip.

 Let's see here, this nice little blue here, which matches, and then the standoffs are

 Next thing, ergonomically speaking, this knife is actually pretty solid.

 Because it is this kind of plastic, they have the ability to very nicely and easily do the

 even the clip seems to fit my hand pretty well.

 So I'm pretty impressed and happy with the ergonomics on this knife here.

 Next thing, I've got to be honest with you, I like the design of this aesthetically speaking.

 It's not like an oh my god showy sort of design, it's not hyper designed or anything like that,

 but every part of it is just like that's pleasing to the eye.

 The overall contour matching across the top here, whoever did this design was clearly

 thinking and did a good job of it, so that's good.

 And finally, the blade on this guy, I freaking love this blade for a couple of reasons.

 The steel on it is S30V, which is absolutely a good steel.

 It's got this very nice swedge on it, which is nice, this little back portion here, and

 gives it a little bit more pokey sort of tip on there.

 I love the fact that it's running very thin stock, compare the thickness of it.

 It is a little bit thinner, I believe, than your Spyderco Delica, which is a very nice

 It's nice, slicey, it's got a full sharpening choil.

 This is just a great little blade for utility cutting.

 Carrying this is like, wow, this is a good cutting tool, and I like that very, very much.

 And so to me, that's the good of your bug out here, is that it's got a just really great

 The anodized studs and standoffs are a nice touch.

 It is completely ambidextrous with the access lock, that is, and the clip being able to

 Let's talk about what's great about this knife.

 To me, what is absolutely great about this knife is the fact that it is so lightweight

 The weight on this guy is really astoundingly light.

 I handed this to fiance, she was like, oh my God, that's light.

 And to compare that to some other well-known knives in this kind of smaller size category,

 The Benchmade 940, this is the 940-2 in G10, comes in at 2.6 ounces.

 The Bokeh Patriot, which is another all plastic, well, except for the blade knife, comes in

 Spydeco Native 5 is around here someplace.

 Way too many knives on my freaking table right now.

 Yeah, here it is, 2.49, and even the Benchmade Mini Grip, this is the G10 version, which

 S30v steel is a good choice, though there are as number of other steels I think should have been used first. The pocket clip is a nice move and seems to work fine. I love Axis deploying the knife though doing so makes it feel blade heavy. I like the blade shape but I think the Kershaw Skyline used the same size and general shape, very very close infact

The big differences here being that BM is almost full flat ground while Kershaw is hollow ground and the approach to the swedge areas is different. I think the actual finish off the blade is better executed by Kershaw as I see almost no machine marks on that blade and tons in the BM

It's a decent the good design that I hope goes through a second generation addressing some of the issues I have outlined here. For now I will be keeping mine but I know it won't be my go to carry with all the other options I have available and choice the market offers

 My issues are numerous so this will seem like a negative review but it is what it is. I have pretty normal sized hands, wearing gloves in the L and XL sizes depending. I find the handle of this knife is thin and narrow which in pocket are great but in use make it uncomfortable to grip well and extended use can cause cramps and soreness in my hands. Additionally there is no discernible effort to give the user traction

Think hard before buying

 The actual knife blade, where it travels and slides along the barrel below the pivot was EXTREMELY rough when I purchased it. I have been using it and wondering why it always felt like it was full of sand. So I finally decided to take it apart to figure it out and yeah. Flat spots worn into the barrel and the very hard steel of the knife was unpolished and rough

 but I need something that has just a bit more substance. I might return this knife but I have not yet decided just yet.

 If it were even 10 or 15% meatier, it would be easier for me to grip but we all have different sized hands so that might make it better for others.  2) When the knife is closed, one opens it with a small light blue protruding piece of metal. To me, that piece of metal is too small. I know that side and weight are important to this particular knife but if it were just protruding a wee bit more, maybe 20% or so, the knife would be so much easier to open

Only reason I am giving this knife a 4 out of 5 star is because the price and name. For 120$ you'd expect more from Benchmade the quality is still superb and above all other knives in my opinion, but for $120 you'd expect more from this knife. My other dissatisfaction is the name it should be called the EDC 535 not the Bugout 535. To some this really doesn't matter to others it might I'm just adding that in the review
