A few complaints are that the data fields are a bit difficult to read when moving at high speeds or working out intensely. Also, the health metrics offer no scores or helpful descriptions of the evaluated data, unlike the Garmin products. Still, we are impressed with this model and its ability to do almost everything the top models do at a lower price point.

The Apex is their leading mid-range model and packs in a surprising amount of features for the price, including a barometric altimeter, optical HR sensor, excellent battery life, and even a sapphire glass screen. The interface has a clear prioritization of sport-specific tracking (there are 20 modes ranging from ski touring to running) that pairs seamlessly with a smartphone app, and the color display is easy to navigate with just two buttons, one of which serves as a dial too. Finally, the Apex is a standout in terms of size and appearance, with a sleeker design than most and the choice between 42- and 46-millimeter models (the 42mm Apex has a shorter battery life and costs slightly less at $300).

While the Apex is all most endurance athletes need and nothing they don't (it’s a popular choice in our Northwest trail running community), it's true that its feature set falls well short of the high-end designs here. First off, navigation is rudimentary (a far cry from the Fenix’s detailed topographic maps), and we’ve been fairly unimpressed with the watch’s HR accuracy and limited training metrics. Second, the Apex offers no music controls, and you don’t get frills like LiveTrack or contactless payment. Finally, COROS’ firmware and app don’t quite measure up to Garmin’s, although we’ve been pleased with the regular updates. But if—like most of us—you simply need a watch that tracks your activities and doesn't die in the process, it’s hard to find a better value than the Apex. When setting up the Apex, the app asks you to select your training level (light, moderate, or hard), and set your daily calorie and exercise goals. I&rsquo;m an average runner at best, so I selected the light training level, and went with the default recommendations of 153 calories and 39 minutes of exercise. If you find your exercise goals too easy, you can change them in the app. When you meet your daily goal, the Apex vibrates and shows a congratulatory message on its screen

After three runs, the app fills in two additional metrics: your lactate threshold and threshold pace. Often used by competitive athletes to evaluate their training load and fatigue, lactate threshold is the point at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood faster than it can be removed, according to the app.&nbsp;

 I like that they offer colorful and more subdued options to fit a range of styles. I went with Illustrator 2, which features a blue-green mountain design with the time, date, and my step count.&nbsp;

Coros Apex Review

 This isn’t for a short period of time, it is literally for the majority of the walk. I’ve tried all of the usual tricks {watch placement, strap adjustment, etc.) with no success. I even switched arms

 For people with poor reading vision (like me), this could be an issue. Notifications are particularly problematic. I once emailed them about this when I was using the Pace 2. They replied that they didn’t have any plans to change that aspect of their interface

 I’ll start by saying that I am a very long-time Garmin hostage; I’ve literally had their devices since their first GPS watch. All my gear is ANT+…and Garmin. But, at least two times a week I grouse about Garmin’s lousy software quality control. And the ongoing battles I have with their software is endless across my watches and bike computes

 For those thinking that perhaps the Coros has a hardware issue, I should note that I had Bluetooth issues on the Pace 2 in many of the similar ways. And for those thinking it’s my phone, I had the same issue with my iPhone 11 and the Pace 2 as well. This is either the Bluetooth stack on their devices, or a poor handling of the Bluetooth API interactions on iOS.  As I finally finished my customization (new watch face, workout screen modifications [data fields]), I was able to finally start putting the Apex Pro through it’s paces

Multi-sport with A Focus On Runners

 It gets covered in sweat and then sawdust clings to it for hours sometimes but the buttons still work like new. Toughest watch I've owned. The battery life is still great and it charges quickly. The company still releases regular firmware updates with fixes and features

 I actually give Fitbit the win on both mobile and website interfaces. I find the dark theme and low contrast text on the mobile app hard to read. I don't like that some screens/views require rotating the phone. And, it's just hard to see some of the data I want to see, like HR during specific parts of a workout

 Updates with new features and fixes are released every month or two. I got one update with new features about 1 week after buying and there's another huge feature release coming out soon. Love that Coros is actively improving an already great product. If you're looking for music, payment, or probably some other fancy non-workout related features, then Garmin may be your best bet but I don't want those things

 The iPhone app interface is why I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 star and I'd probably only deduct half a start if that were possible.  * Web interface - practically non-existent. Yes, you can log in and see a summary of workouts but that's it. Most people use Strava or other websites these days and I guess that's what Coros is counting on

Best GPS Watch of 2022 - GearLab

I'm in love with my Coros Apex. Got it for $300 on sale. I seriously do not think there is a better deal for a watch. To get a comparable Garmin I'd have to spend $650

If you want to monitor your HR, then get a strap and hook it up to the app you already use. Wrist based HR monitors are inaccurate and thus not a good reason to get a sports watch (smart watches are like Apple watches). 

I would get a cheaper running watch and see how you like it. Honestly I don't know why anyone would ever care to use an app to track their running. They are a total PITA to use, sometimes aren't accurate, and they suck up batter life on your phone which can be a safety issue if you run remote trails. 

If you run a lot, honestly you'll love having a watch and won't go back. But buy a dedicated sports watch, not a smart watch or some other stupid fitness tracker that doesn't have a battery life past a few hours. 

I'm very new to running (2x 5k a week) but my birthday is coming up and I've been looking at fitness trackers. I have a nice mechanical watch so I am not too fussed about a smart watch but it seems at least to a beginner that fitness bands (charge, vivosport etc) seem to be less popular and have a lot less features than smart watches.

Is there no replacement for a proper garmin watch? Really I just want to monitor my hr, and see my split times on my wrist ideally via strava, the phone notifications are not very appealing.

Are fitness bands becoming redundant?

 I almost forgot I had it on at times. The battery life is the selling point of this watch (and frankly, all Coros products). A bit better than what I get on my Fenix 6X.  The trade-off in software and lack of data ultimately had me stick with Garmin though

I was thinking about upgrading to a Garmin forerunner watch (probably 245) due to GPS and added functionality and metrics (pace, ground contact time, recommended workouts, etc). I've also realized a lot of my fitbit's features are behind a pay wall. 
Has anyone else went for it and is it worth it?

Upgrading from Fitbit to Garmin

I only use the text & call notifications because everything else was just overwhelming/obnoxious. That's also because my Pixel was updated & the "new & improves bubbles" turned my notifications to shit.

The Facebook messenger notifications were relentless (it buzzed when I received a message, when I opened the bubble, or even when I opened the app). So, I simply turned those notifications off.

I use the Coros Apex PRO with mine (I'm a runner & the battery life is insanely amazing).
