Codenames is a social word game with a simple premise and challenging game play. Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames. The teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the table. Their teammates try to guess words of their color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin. The game works very well with 4 players if you prefer to guess without help. Or you can add more players if you prefer lively discussion. There is also a cooperative variant where a single team tries to achieve the highest score they can by playing against the game itself.

In two teams, players take turns giving hints to help their teammates guess specific words on the board; the more words you can get with a single hint, the better. Since it does involve some strategy to create multiple ways to hint at words, it can be better suited for older children and adults, but really anyone can play.
If you have a super small game night, Codenames is playable with two people, but we think it's much more fun with at least four. The game tends to work better if you have an even number of people to avoid giving an advantage to a team with more people and, therefore, more brainpower for guessing. The game is logic-intensive, which some players may find challenging but also rewarding, and since it requires a bit of focus, it may not suit a more casual play environment.

 You can go big and use one key word for 5 cards if you wish - but it's at your risk. If your partner happens to guess the dreaded assassin word, then you automatically lose. While it sounds generally simple, it really isn't.  It's definitely more of a luck game and how well do you know how your partner thinks

 And I found it really hard to keep track of which words were mine - I had to write them onto a piece of paper and make sure my words didn't relate too much to my opponent's, otherwise your partner might guess a word that is for the opposing team! Not even sure where that timer comes into play because we took forever in giving and guessing clues.  I guess because words can be interpreted in so many different ways and there are so many different patterns, you can use this set for some time before it gets old. I kind of feel silly now because I thought this was a strategy board game - I sent one to somebody for Secret Santa … hopefully they liked it? I do agree that this game would be better suited for older teens and adults. Not sure if I can see younger children getting into it

  I've played with my family for several times and it took awhile before my parents and I completely understood the rules. You play in teams, using 25 word cards laid out in front of you on the table. You draw a key card (can be flipped left or right to make for new patterns) and whichever color team you are on, you follow the pattern on the card. You take turns giving one word clues for your partner whereupon they must use that word to deduct what word(s) you had in mind

Not bad once you get the concept

 I think it's fantastic that someone who started their design career with something as niche as TtA has managed to produce one of the few true breakouts into mass market popularity from hobby boardgaming with Codenames. Such a simple, fun, and *teachable* design that can get almost any group enjoying themselves within a few minutes.

For me, the one I've enjoyed most is **Codenames Duet**, and in second place is **Through The Ages: A New Story: Digital Edition: Or Whatever the Actual Name Is, I've Forgotten**. Totally different from each other, both just fantastic games. "Vlaada Chvatil" - my favorite boardgame

 It's a party game, you want to get excited, but I also think that the quality of the *gameplay* really suffers if the code masters can't be stone-faced and not give away any additional information.

 It's a game that simultaneously feels like it's not long enough -- like I want there to be more strategic depth -- but also too long for the amount that's actually present. Maybe I would like it more if I reduced the starting health to say, 40 or even 30. I've really only gotten a good response from one person that I've taught it to. Maybe it's just not for my group

16 - **7 Wonders Duel**

20 - **Wingspan**

24 - **Viticulture Essential Edition**

92 - **Patchwork**

But my order for those would be:

1 - **Patchwork** - my favourite game of all time so it's an easy #1! I think **Patchwork** is unimprovable, it is a wonderful perfect information abstract game with a high skill ceiling. It creates the most exciting moments and difficult decisions. An absolute gem of a game.

2 - **Azul** - I'm a huge fan of open drafting mechanisms that lead to hate drafting as well as tile placement so I guess it's no surprise that both **Patchwork** and **Azul** top my list. This game has great table presence too which never hurts.

3 - **The Quacks of Quedlinburg** - it's just such silly fun! The bag building is well implemented but really what keeps me coming back to Quacks is that push your luck element.

4 - **Architects of the West Kingdom** - it was hard to rank this one because I've only managed to play it once so far. But that one game was up there amongst the most fun I've ever had playing a board game for the first time. It's a really clever worker placement game, perhaps my favourite one, though **Targi** gives it some competition. I think **Architects of the West Kingdom** could climb as high as #2 on this list but I'm not comfortable putting it up there just yet.

5 - **Cartographers** - always a casual good time. This game was my first non **Yahtzee** exposure to the roll/flip and write genre. It's great. I play it quite often and it has held up well to many plays.

6 - **Res Arcana** - I'm hoping this game will climb up higher after a few more plays. I've played it a handful of times and for whatever reason it still hasn't clicked for me. But I love the concept and the art, and I fully expect to have a blast playing this once I've wrapped my head around it a bit more. 

7 - **Viticulture** - I think this game is wonderful but suffers in comparison to **Architects of the West Kingdom**, I played them both on the same day. I'm excited to play **Viticulture** again but it didn't wow me to the same extent as **Architects of the West Kingdom**. 

8 - **Wingspan** - I'll give **Wingspan** credit because of all the overt engine building games I've played, it's the one where I most quickly understood the engine. It's a gorgeous game with fun game play but not a favourite of mine.

9 - **7 Wonders Duel** - I feel kind of sad having **7 Wonders Duel** so low on my list. I love fun open drafting mechanics. Bruno Cathala is my favourite designer. But I don't know, this one doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'll enjoy it more as time goes on. I'm still excited and motivated to play it again. For me confusing iconography can really impede my enjoyment of a game. When I compare the iconography of this game to other games on this list that are heavy in iconography, I find this one has the worst use of iconography. I'm constantly having to refer back to the rule book when I play this game which gets in the way of immersing myself in the experience. 

10 - **The Crew** - I've played through a bunch of the earlier missions at two players. I don't know if trick taking games are just not my thing, if this game really suffers at two players or if it will improve as the missions become increasingly more complicated. But so far we've accomplished every mission on the first attempt and I find it pretty dull.

Final thoughts: it's interesting to me how my rankings are almost in reverse order to the BGG rankings. I tend to prefer lighter games and love abstracts. I find BGG skews heavy and doesn't tend to favour abstracts (**Azul** is the top abstract game on BGG and only clocks in at 53 in the overall rankings!), so it's not too surprising that games like **Patchwork**, **Azul** and **Cartographers** are ranked a bit lower on BGG.

* **First Contact** - 3rd play, first at 5p. I almost like this better at 4 and 5 over 6 or 7 as I think it moves too fast with what language becomes known at higher counts. Interesting riff on the Codenames formula. Not sure it has staying power in the long run

My friends and I play codenames online using a voice chat and have had a long standing disagreement about whether or not Googling should be allowed or not in codenames. Now, I have no issue with the occasional Google search in casual codenames. But my friends pretty much rely exclusively on Google to come up with their words and to decode them, and especially so during our server tournaments (where the hosts allow Googling).

For about 6th graders and up, Code Names is a delight when you magically find commonality between disparate words, and your teammates successfully follow the logic of your single word. This game takes some mental acuity, I would not suggest it for fun while imbibing in, ahem, adult beverages  Upon opening, the game arrived with a coating of dust on the contents of the box. After a bit of investigating, I found the enclosed sand timer had cheap plastic stoppers on each end, and not one but both had managed to fall off in shipping, spreading sand everywhere. It was a bit of a mess

 Sure, the expectation for me is is really quite high. One of the things that I can talk towards and I didn't back Initial gloom Haven but I can talk towards the people I've dealt with when it comes to Cephalo Fair games specifically they have and I don't know if they have had a history of communication being a rough thing. usually with new public hit it out of the park. That balance of how much feedback you give the community, how quickly you respond I mean it becomes overwhelming very quickly

 No, all right, you're coming into a scrappy little abandoned town, doing your best to wage war and help them overcome the beast that just overwhelm their ranks. And they have new leadership. New people they're looking to you for help and asking you to go out, journey and adventuring and rebuilding their city. That's sort of the play sure of

 Okay I Have to say the six characters that we have here the ones that we've been able to dive into. They feel healthy and built out and developed. Now that being said, we didn't get sent everything in a core box, right? I Would be willing to bet there's still development being made on late game and mid game stuff probably. I Like where they've started though I Feel very confident by the stuff that they've given me has left me feeling very confident in the product that they're producing and the things that they're changing from core Blue Haven into frosted

Frosthaven Review - Before You Back - (Quackalope Games)

 The kick open the door and what's behind it now. the way this book is laid out is so nice because okay, I've got all the stuff I need. So I've got I know there's gonna be other bad guys I haven't seen yet I know there's gonna be rooms I haven't seen yet. Um, but it's not until I kick open that door then I get to see what is waiting on the other side and that seems to be a pretty consistent idea they've done I Love it it does

 and it's one of the things that I'm probably probably the thing that makes me most excited about exploring Frost Aven Um, but again folks, I if you already I don't even know why you're watching me, you know if you play gloom Haven how amazing it is and you know that this is even better and that's it folks that is.  You want to go out and troll Jaws of the Line I Think it is Gloom Haven Jaws of the Lion because that actually kind of steps you through all the ideas. and by the time you've finished that campaign which is a shorter one, it doesn't have a hundred scenarios. a has Aa, no ten, or fifteen something like that. Then you will be ready for Gloom Haven And you'll probably ready for Frost

 but we're going up against slow creatures I'm sick I think I'll still be faster than them I'll be over there. What are you gonna do? And your facade as well?  and I think it's probably going to be a slam dunk starting item on the banner Spear for me here in Frost Haven. I mean, the amount of Aoes this character has, That's really going to improve that character, I think. And I'm quite surprised that this was one of the items that we're allowed to bring over. Considering that Warhammer is very, very powerful item, you know it's not just adding like a little bit of utility, it's adding like a serious tool for players, which I'm a little bit surprised about

 I don't know if this is going to be in every scenario or occasionally here, or there could be interesting, but again, if you slide from one icy terrain to another one, then you're going to slide off again. So there's a way in theory you could chain this together and kind of slide off towards the end because you get that one extra movement. So interesting. We'll see we'll see how this ends up panning out, but I like this thematically

 But I want to talk about the items because I think it's important. So the first item is Warhammer. This is one of my favorite items from base Gloomhaven. It was a absolute slam dunk starting item for me on the crag car and on the brew

 So this is one that's actually going to be double-sided It's going to start on one side and the first time that you use it, you're then going to flip it over to the other side and then it's going to do something else. Or there's something else that you need to do. Maybe to flip it back over to the other side. This is just going to be really cool
