I decided to give pour-over-coffee a try, and so I bought this Chemex with a gooseneck electric kettle. Currently I am using a cheap $20 blade grinder, but even then the resulting coffee from this is amazing. My first attempt I failed miserably because my coffee grinds were too course.   One thing to point out - this does NOT come with any filters! I fully expected there to at least be a small trial pack of filters included in the box given the price. When the box arrived I found that was not the case, so I had to order and wait on a metal filter insert to arrive. For the amount of money spent on a cheap glass vase basically, I would have expected a couple of filters in the box at least.  The make of this product is cheap

Sometimes you need to know when not to be cheap.

 The coffee grinder uses about 125 ML of coffee beans and that seems to be just the right amount for four measuring cups of hot water. It took some experimentation on my part to find a setting for the grinder which suited me and the coffee pot. I'd say my grind is a bit coarser than a medium grind.  I use the unbleached coffee filters and pour a little hot water through the filter before I add the coffee

 I think rinsing the filter removes or at least minimizes the taste of the paper filter and it also warms the pot a little before you pour the larger portion of the just off the boil water into the pot. I've been using Mocha Java coffee which is medium blend and I drink it black so i might be making my coffee lighter than people who use cream and sugar. Presently I'm reheating my cups of coffee in the microwave, but I'm considering getting an insulated stainless steel carafe to store the coffee and keep it hot. A friend says microwaving the coffee makes it bitter, but I have to believe he's overheating the coffee because I don't get that from just warming it up, so I'm undecided about the carafe at present

It makes great coffee when you've worked out a system.

I had one of these years ago and forgot why I didn't like it. While it is very stylish and makes an initial nice cup of coffee it loses heat very quickly. And reheating on the stove is not the best.

You get a little bit of bitterness at the bottom of the carafe if you drink the whole thing (which I did obviously) but I would say that what you get at the bottom is roughly the same as what you get from the best French press. There's practically no sediment at the bottom of the carafe when you get to the end and the coffee is very very good.  One caveat here: As this coffee maker has no heating elements, there is no way of keeping the coffee warm for an extended period of time

If you drink coffee as fast and addictively as I do, then that's not a problem, but if you drink it more slowly and leisurely, I recommend getting some kind of thermal carafe to keep the coffee warm.  All in all, a very worthwhile investment

  The coffee I used was medium fine ground Caribou Obsidian Dark Roast which is a current favorite. (I like strong coffee)  I used 1/3 cup of coffee grounds and made about the capacity of the coffee maker I think. (I personally don't consider this to be 8 cups but then I drink my coffee out of a Wile E. Coyote coffee mug of which I got 3 mugs full out of this brewing)  It takes a little bit of time to make the coffee

Are espressos machines viable for home?

  On the positive side, I like the appearance of this machine. It definitely has a 'presence' on the kitchen counter (I also purchased the Rancilio grinder and the Rancilio storage base base). I think the major issue with this machine is that it gets into a price point where most of us expect more features and consistency. As many have pointed out, the machine CAN produce GREAT espresso, but it IS very inconsistent, and if you go through the whole cycle of temp surfing, it's a lot of work for a shot

 I'm keeping it even though it looks and feels like something from a Soyouz rocket control box. The coffee better be good - in fact I expect it to be great once I get acquainted with this baby.  So.

The Silvia has the least frustrating of these, in temperature control - you can learn to "temperature surf". The pressure is right, the portafilter is the standard 58mm size, the steaming is pretty good, and so on.

So I kinda want to upgrade to an espresso kit at home, but I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.  

Right now, I mostly brew coffee using a surprisingly decent pair of shockingly cheap cuisinart products---a random $60 burr grinder (DBM-8) that they make, and a drip coffeemaker (DCC-3200).  When I want to get a little nicer, I break out the aeropress that I've had basically since they came out.  And honestly, I'm pretty satisfied with that setup---I'm very picky about the beans I use, and with high quality beans it seems to work pretty well for me.  So I keep kicking around the idea of upgrading to a proper pourover setup and deciding that the extra expense and trouble won't bring me *that much* better coffee to be worth it.

But espresso is a different story.  I'd really love to be able to make myself a capp at home.  But also, nothing's nastier to me than bad espresso. So if I'm going to do that, I'm going to do it right---which I guess means sinking a couple grand into equipment.  Which... I make enough money that I can afford that, but not enough that it wouldn't sting, you know?  I guess it pays for itself in a couple hundred drinks, but will I actually make a couple hundred drinks?

Having never pulled a shot before, I'm pretty hesitant to make that kind of commitment, to the expense, and to the effort (especially maintenance).  What if I hate making espresso at home, and then I end up with a pile of extremely expensive equipment moldering on my counter?  

Has anyone been in this kind of situation?  How do you tell if taking the plunge is a good idea?

What I'd ideally do is take a class, in a nice third wave cafe somewhere where I can basically pay good baristas to watch me pull shots and tell me where I'm screwing up for a few hours---and then I could buy equipment with some confidence that I had some idea how to work it, or decide I hate it and skip it.  I'm in a very major city (Chicago), so you'd think such a thing would exist... but I can't find one. (Possibly because covid?) So I'm kind of at a loss... all suggestions appreciated!

Advice on taking the espresso plunge?

Forget the Add-ons for now..you don’t need to worry about mods till you’ve got your feet wet, and are comfortable with your daily process enough to know when something is off. My suggestion

I used to have a Mr. Coffee one that I bought for $250. It was okay, made pretty decent espresso, but I’m ready to move on to a nicer one. I am willing to make an investment, I just want to buy one that is very high quality, that I’ll have for a long time. Any suggestions appreciated!!!

What is the best espresso maker?

 The steam wand is better, the group head is more solid, the boiler is better... Everything

 This is when you can grind your espresso and get your portafilter loaded. When the light goes off, wait 30 seconds and then pull your shot. That's it! The results I get doing this are fabulous, for me, a non professional barista :) All in all, this is an awesome machine, and I am very happy that I got it.

 The first machine I ordered was the Gaggia Classic. It leaked from the first moment I got it. Amazon was AMAZING with customer service and returning it, but their Gaggias were recalled because mine was yet another complaint from an Amazon customer. So I had a decision to make

 Look at what everyone likes about this machine, they are all true comments. But here is my list of gripes with this machine. The design needs to be revised in my opinion.  1
