We'd never used a Kamado-style grill until testing out the Char-Griller Akorn Jr., but this grill design quickly won us over. A typical Kamado grill is egg-shaped and insulated by thick ceramic sidewalls, which boosts heat retention and grants you the versatility to smoke at 200℉ or sear at 700℉. The Akorn Jr. is not ceramic, however — Char-Griller has instead substituted triple-walled steel, which is how they can offer this heat-efficient grill for a fraction of the cost of traditional Kamado grills. Though the pan is only sized for a small coal bed, we were still able to sear steaks at 500℉ within minutes of getting the coals up to temperature.
There was definitely a learning curve regarding temperature management with this grill — once it gets heated up, it's a challenge to get it to cool back down quickly. Out of all the grills we tested, this one has one of the smallest cooking surfaces, and it was challenging to find a spot on the edges to move the food to so it wouldn't burn as we were figuring out how to control the heat zones correctly. If you are looking at the price-per-square-inch of cooking surface, the Akorn Jr. could be considered costly. However, with its capacity to grill, smoke, sear &#40;and possibly bake&#41;, it becomes clear that this is a small but mighty charcoal grill. If learning a new style of grilling seems daunting, Char-Griller includes helpful instructions suggesting damper adjustments to achieve the ideal temperature for whatever type of cooking you are doing.

 This is really good to see because it's very well packed and when you order something you do want it arriving at your house you know in a perfect condition and then down in the bottom we have the mystery box and I do not know what this is so we'll open that in a couple of minutes. Pretty heavy, more hardware I'm assuming so we'll check that out and then we have another piece here that there is going to be going on the inside of the bottom and I'll just give a a little show of this. Very nice. I'm really impressed with the build quality

 Walk those down, don't over tighten, that's it. That's how easy it is to put all those leg pieces on. So at this point I have put on the main handle two pieces of hardware. Here there are two screws on each side and then you slip this in

Char-Griller Akorn Jr Kamado Kooker Charcoal Grill Unboxing and Review

It's a little hard for temperature control, however, it's my first charcoal grill so I think it's a i need more practice. Took me 20 mins to put together and great portable grill.

 After that the temp slowly started climbing. When it got to 280 deg, I did my first vent adjustment. Fair warning, a little goes a long way in terms of adjustment. Over shooting both to the up and down side is easy to do

5 hours getting it put together, when it should have only taken 5 minutes!  Now for the Pro's: Other than for the assembly, it is hard to find anything negative to say about this little unit. One thing to note, this is not a ceramic cooker as you will find with other Kamado tile grills. It is made of steel with "triple insulated walls". However I did not find this to detract from it's performance

  All in All, I have to say I'm loving this grill. It is the perfect size for when you are cooking for just one or two people, which is for me most of the time. You can't go wrong for $200.

Wonderfully inexpensive way to get into Kamado cooking.

 Almost threw away the main grill grate. Its packaged underneath the very bottom styrofoam packing with no protection other than the cardboard. Mine was fine when I found it, but I can see these arrive cracked from rough transport.  The handle attachment is poor

I already have one of those big 300lb beasts of a kamado cooker and wanted something easier to fire up and clean for a quick 2 person dinner or a few burgers and this seems to fit the bill. There are similar all ceramic mini-eggs out there, but they are pricey with smaller cooking surfaces and super heavy. This hits the sweet spot of affordability, larger cooking area and easy to move around without pulling something.  POSITIVES One of the best features of this unit is the removeable ashpan

The combination of the middle hanger and the 2 quick release clips on the edges make it easy to clean and prevent the pan from accidentally falling off when you release the clips. You'll need to spin the pan a 1/4 turn to pull it out from the front since the legs get in the way of the handles, but its really easy once you figure it out

  NEGATIVES Packaging was a bit poor. The inner liner has a spot rubbed away by one of the feet on the firebowl about the size of a quarter. Not enough damage to warrant a return but irritating nonetheless. I'll just add a little oil on it on the first season

Good value for the price

This little red Kamado grill is down right awesome so far! I've had it 2 weeks & cooked a pork loin & meat loaf  & both were juicy melt in yo mouth delicious !! Very easy to control temp. Holds set temp. Great & cooks like an oven. I'll never go back to a regular charcoal grill!!!

 There is actually a gas version. First off the assembly is very easy for this, basically to install the grips on the sides and on the top, the only thing you need to use is a phillips screwdriver. We actually took this to a tailgate and used it to cook some brats and hot dogs and burgers and everything went really well so yeah we just used the charcoal briquettes, as you can see here, and everything but yeah, it's pretty cool because then also at the End, it has kind of the tuck and carry lid lock, so basically the feet that you're seeing there just flip up and then they kind of cover and keep the lid on. So then you can just kind of carry it by the top grip there

 The setup was simple: it did a great job at the tailgate and it's a pretty versatile option very easy to get in and out of the car and take somewhere with you, whether you're camping tailgating, whatever you want to do, 

 The grade is a plated seal, cooking grate and you have plated steel legs as well, and they say you can get up to six burgers on there, which we did get on there and you can definitely get a good amount of hot dogs or brats on there. As well yeah overall, this worked great. Good Paint Coating, Good Grills, Good Handles. A good solid, good cooking grill. Food is cooked consistently all over - no over-cooked or under-cooked parts of meat, poultry, or fish.

Perfect size for small cooks. I have a 26er for bigger cooks, but if I just want to do a couple of burgers or a small steak, the Go Anywhere Charcoal is great! Uses 2/3's the charcoal!

Primarily bought so I can have a small charcoal grill on a small balcony. Love the form factor, and the easy to use vents. Just make sure you have heat mitts on when adjusting them. Love that because it is small, it doesn't require as much charcoal as the big Webers, which means charcoal is ready much faster
