Newly Gadgets

 This is the main downfall of this grill. Mandatory burn-off/scraping/brushing/oiling of the grate after each use is ridiculous. I love how quickly this cooks and the great flavor, but the required care is pushing me back to my old low-maintenance grill. Oh, and the ignitor on unit this quit after a few months use :^(

GREAT CONCEPT, POOR EXECUTION

 Living in a multi-floor home, it got cumbersome to lug all of my cooking utinsels, sauces, and food to grill downstairs to the big grill, especially for cooking for 2 people. But, when I did, I can’t ever remember a time where I didn’t wait for the big boy to heat up to at least 500 to grill. I don’t do low and slow on a grill. If I wanted that, I’d use my smoker or the oven

 The other comments on the grease holes in the grate clogging up are true too. I now have a better grill brush that I use on it after cooking, but about 3-4 cooks in, I find I have to take the grate out and give it a wash. Again, not terrible, but not the lowest maintenance compared to porcelain coated cast iron grates.  Summary: kinda sucks that I had to get an aftermarket regulator and get a maintenance routine for this grill

The Good and The Bad...

It does not matter how good a product is, if it is a grill and if it does not light/burn/cook, it is a shelf decoration only. Camping and ready to cook the main meal, but the grill does not work.

Don't waste your money. You cannot cook on this. There is only one temperature setting and it is blowtorch hot.

 Just add wood chips and seasoned meat and your all set. Wonderfull taste with that smoked flavor. Would not be with out either one.

OUTSTANDING BBQ & SMOKER

I bought this to downsize from my original weber Q and also get something that operated better at higher elevations. The weber has a much large grill surface then I typically need and struggles to stay hot when used over 8,000'

This smaller version of our favorite Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill shares many of its attributes. The ample cooking surface fit six to eight burgers at a time or a 1½-pound flank steak. The domed cover allowed us to grill-roast a butterflied chicken perfectly. Adjustable vents on the cover and on opposite sides of the grill’s body gave us plenty of control over the fire.

 Well, the problem is that the side vent holes are ABOVE the level where the coals are. See my attached photo. My old cast iron hibachi grill had two vents that were positioned UNDER the goals, and they worked great before the thing finally rusted out and fell apart after many years of use. What would be nice is if the vent holes on the Smokey Joe Gold were still on the side, but lower, BENEATH the coal grate location, instead of ABOVE it

 Now if only I could get the maximum air flow I need with the natural charcoal I use (for the type of cooking I like to do, which is high heat fast grill). Weber, please consider a design change!

Smokey Joe Gold - Would be nice to have side air vents below the charcaol, not above it

 This preserves all the features of the Gold I like while giving me the superior vent setup of the Silver. It did take a bit of work to create, but the results seem to have been worth it. I also held onto the aluminum ash catcher of the Silver and the better grill grate from the Gold.  That said, I wouldn't give anyone the advice to buy both grills

  My solution to all of that after buying this product was to create a Frankengrill by taking the kettle of the old Smoky Joe Silver and replacing its bent aluminum legs with the sturdy steel ones from the Gold (which fit perfectly). I also drilled 2 equidistant holes 1&1/2 inches down the bowl and was able to attach the lid holder bar. This preserves all the features of the Gold I like while giving me the superior vent setup of the Silver. It did take a bit of work to create, but the results seem to have been worth it

Good features, bad air flow.

I've only had the chance to use this grill a couple of times, but I love it. The other reviews commenting on the heat circulation/distribution are definitely right and the tinfoil cure works perfectly. See the other comments to find the solution, it's a simple fix that takes 10 seconds prior to placing coals. I thought of dropping the rating because of the design, but the solution is super easy and I'm sure it was designed the way it was to allow for other possible uses for the grill

Great portable grill

 You may have to orient food properly on the grille surface for best cooking. More importantly, there is a mechanism on top that allows you to stow the lid "open", instead of laying it on the ground. The same mechanism also allows you to lock the top onto the grill assembly and contain the waste charcoal for future, convenient disposal. I found that after grilling and closing the side and top vents that the Smokey Joe Gold extinguished the remaining coals and cools pretty quickly so it can be put away safely

 The instructions say to stoke the grille with 30 charcoal briquettes, but I found this was not enough to cook seven 3/4" thick, 8 oz burgers. In the future I think I'll use 35-40 to get the extra cooking time. I bought a couple extra 14" grill grates so I can swap them out between uses--these cost around $7.00 each on Amazon (compared to $15

A big upgrade over previous Smokey Joe models--negative reivews are, I believe, without merit.

Since there are now only two of us at home, we needed a smaller grill when we want to grill something for both of us. Standard Weber quality, just the right size. Heats well.

 The other is the "tuck n carry" lid lock/lid holder design. It's difficult to lock onto the lid handle, and difficult to get unlocked. I have a Jumbo Joe 18" and it is much easier to use than this 14" model. If I hadn't of thrown the packaging away I'd return it
