Canon EOS 7D vs Canon EOS Rebel SL3

I know it’s not a top tier camera but it was in my budget and I felt like I would actually use it. I’m not sure if technically it outperforms the 7D… but it seems like it does! Anyways… I would love to invest in a lens here soon. I would love a sigma lens but it’s a little pricey so I’m wondering if a Canon 50mm would be worth it?

Love the fact that I can use legacy Canon lenses or the newest, as my budget allows. I got the 18-55 STM kit lens and it is a fine starter lens, especially for video (wide angle since the camera crops, especially with 4K video), it's silent, fast and relatively accurate. I also got a "nifty fifty" prime Canon 50mm lens that is Super for portraits and just to walk around with taking photos. While the raw files have excellent dynamic range, the tonality in the JPEG versions look a little more compressed than I'm happy with, and more than can be explained away by a difference in bit depth (the same raw image opened as 16-bit in Photoshop and then downconverted to 8-bit retains better contrast). As for the video, it looks very good, though to me not nearly as sharp or saturated as a midrange Canon HD camcorder (the trade-off, here, of course, is interchangeable lenses for a reasonable price). The biggest draw for current Canon users thinking of stepping up from the 50D (or that class of camera) to the 7D is the improved autofocus and better photo quality at higher ISO sensitivities; it's significantly better than the 50D in those respects, and well worth the price differential. Things aren't quite as clear when compared with the 5D Mark II

Canon "claimed" to have sent me a email link where I could send them my pictures. Funny thing is, to date I have not received a email link, over three weeks. Update, tonight, after following a Canon 7D users following "tips"; Verify the AF in aperture priority and shutter priority using a single AF point and multiple AF points. It is also important to remember to set the proper Custom Function III

For the type of video you're doing, I prefer the Canon. The autofocus is smoother and you can scrub footage to review it, which is really important. The Sony has weird old VCR-style controls to review footage and it means sometimes I don't catch problems I need to know about soon enough to refilm.
