If you're looking for a fixed lens compact that's easy to take wherever you go, the best camera under $1,000 that we've tested is the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II. This compact point-and-shoot is incredibly portable yet still feels very comfortable to shoot with, thanks to its small handgrip and thumb rest. It features a pop-up electronic viewfinder if you prefer not to use the screen, though it's very small and doesn't have the sharpest resolution.

It has a built-in lens with a 24&ndash;120mm full-frame equivalent focal length, giving you some range to zoom in on subjects that are a bit farther away. It also has a built-in neutral density (ND) filter, which can help with long exposure shots or let you shoot a wider aperture in bright conditions. It also has a very fast 16 fps burst rate to capture brief moments of fast action, though its image buffer is fairly small, and it takes a while to empty before you can continue shooting. Overall, the camera delivers very good image quality.

That said, it's not as well-suited to shooting in low light due to its smaller 1-inch sensor and disappointing RAW noise handling capability. The camera also has a limited battery life, though battery performance can vary with settings and usage habits, and it performs similarly to other compact cameras. Despite its faults, this is still a great fixed lens compact for those who don't want to spend over $1,000.

This powerful point-and-shoot takes very good photos and video. The 3x optical zoom lens has a bright f/2 maximum aperture, which can capture images even in dimly lit situations.  At 7 ounces (with battery, memory card, and strap included), the camera is lightweight, a big plus when you're hiking up a mountain or out choosing leafy greens at the local farm with a baby strapped to your back. In addition to the features referenced in the introduction to this story, the G9 X Mark II has a larger-than-average 1-inch sensor and a pop-up flash, both really handy when you're snapping pictures in those low-light situations.  There are, however, a few drawbacks. The model lacks the hot-shoe mount required for certain camera accessories and a viewfinder, which means you'll need to rely solely on the excellent touch-screen display to compose your shots. And the lens stops down to f/4.9 when zoomed in, making it more difficult to capture faraway subjects indoors and at night.

Digital Photography Review

The Canon G5 X II has a shorter, faster lens than the RX100 VII, giving the option of blurrier backgrounds and better image quality as the light level falls. It still manages to cover a versatile 24-120mm equivalent range.
The G5 X II produces very good photos, with good Raw image quality and JPEGs with the kind of color one expects from Canon. Video quality is reasonable, though since it lacks a mic socket, the G7 X III and RX100 VII are better choices for vlogging.
The design of the camera is very good, with a customizable, 'clicky' front control dial, dedicated exposure comp dial, flip-up touchscreen LCD and that handy EVF. It's responsive to use and its interface is simple and focused. On the negative side, the G5 X II's autofocus system which, while very good, just can't keep up with the RX100 VII. Battery life isn't great either, although the camera does support USB charging.

For those who aren't willing to drop a small fortune just for a point-and-shoot, the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II offers a good balance of performance and features at a more palatable price. Like the Sony RX100 VII, it uses a one-inch sensor, so image quality isn't as good as large-sensor compacts like the Fujifilm X100V. However, it's still a step above most smartphone cameras, and you get a built-in zoom lens for versatile shooting, although its zoom range is shorter.

The camera's super portable and, like the Sony, has a little pop-up viewfinder for sunny days when the screen is harder to see. It doesn't have the best battery life, but most point-and-shoots are limited in that respect. Its autofocus system is also a lot less reliable as far as tracking faster-moving subjects. However, it's still a great pocket camera for the price, and its small handgrip makes it a lot more comfortable to shoot with if ergonomics are a priority for you.

If you don't have over a grand of change just lying around to spend on a large-sensor compact camera like the Fujifilm X100V or the Sony RX100 VII, there are more affordable options that'll still get you solid image quality. The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is one of the best in that category. It feels well-made and has some of the best ergonomics of any compact we've tested, with a surprisingly comfortable handgrip and thumb rest. It's got a tilting screen and, just like the Sony, has a little pop-up viewfinder, as well. Also, like the Sony camera, it uses a one-inch sensor that gives you better-than-average image quality.

The built-in lens is quite good. It can open up to a fairly wide aperture, and its 5x zoom is pretty versatile. The camera also has image stabilization and a built-in ND filter if you want to shoot at slower shutter speeds in bright lighting. The autofocus on this camera can be pretty sluggish and inaccurate, and battery life is limited. You'll get better AF and battery life with the higher-end Sony, not to mention a lens with twice as much zoom range. But if you're looking for something with a more affordable price tag, the G5 X is a very solid, versatile compact camera.

If you don't want to spend as much, the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is a great mid-range option. It's easily one of the most comfortable point-and-shoots we've tested, thanks to a nicely designed grip, which, along with Canon's intuitive menu and button layout, makes this camera a blast to shoot with. It also has a nearly identical pop-up viewfinder as the one found on the Sony RX100 VII, great for sunny days when it's harder to see the screen.

The built-in lens on this thing is also better than the Sony's when it comes to low light since it opens up to a wider max aperture, but the trade-off is a significantly shorter zoom range. Its autofocus system is also disappointing and struggles to track subjects quickly and accurately, so keep that in mind if you plan on shooting busy scenes or faster subjects. Otherwise, this camera still has a lot to offer travelers who want something compact and comfortable to shoot with.

  In the end, for $900.00 plus tax, it isn't a keeper. I'd prefer (for about the same price), Canon's SL3 SLR.  Other than size and the Digic 8 processor, the camera is not a stand-out

 This is the cameras highlight! The camera produces images quickly and without any sort of lag, no matter how hard you push it. Use a high-end SD card as well to marry that processor to the speed of a quality SD card.  The optical zoom is a 5X. Fair enough

So popular and why Canon carries so many in its range, unlike the g7 X Mark 3, which looks almost identical to its predecessor, the g5 x mark 2 has been completely redesigned. It costs 849 British pounds roughly similar to that of the Sony, rx100 5a and 130 pounds more than canons own g7 X. Mark 3, I had a chance to try out the g5 x mark 2 and learn more about it at an official Canon press preview. So in this video I'll tell you everything I know so far, but do keep an eye open for my full review, which will follow and go into way more detail

Canon G5X II HANDS-ON first looks review

 They also gain 120 frames per second slo-mo. Now, it's not the sharpest, but it's a great thing to have the thing. That'S really weird for me, when I'm talking about Canon cameras is one of the weakest things on this is actually the autofocus. This does not get the dual pixel autofocus that we see on canons, DSLR and mirrorless cameras, so the video autofocus, especially if you're on the long end and you've, got a subject moving towards you

 The autofocus is way better, better video I mean it just has better technology. However, it is way more expensive and that does have to be appreciated and that big price disparity brings me to the only thing that I think I would really change on the g5 x mark 2, because we have such a big price difference. I feel we could raise the price a little bit higher on this camera, but then get in a lot of the same features as we have on the g7 X Mark 3. Why do we to pick between the two? Why doesn't this have a mic jack as well as the g7x mark 3? This could easily also have that live streaming capability, and then that would make this a very compelling and very unique camera on the market

The video toolkit here is pretty basic. The G5 X can record at 4K at 30fps&mdash;a firmware update is coming to add 24fps by the end of the year. It also supports 1080p at up to 120fps, so slow-motion playback is an option.

The lens covers an ample zoom range, opening up all the way to f/1.8 for low-light capture at its wide end, and offering up aperture control so you can get sharper landscape shots when you have plenty of light.

 The video was taken with the camera on tripod, controlled from my android phone via the wireless connection. The controls on this camera are very easy to use; one button push puts all the relevant functions on the touch screen, making it simple to access all the most important settings. Any conceivable manual control is at your fingertips, right down to flash compensation. This is not a cheap camera, but for image quality and control freaks like me it is a dream

 The digital zoom goes out to 20x, and I was really surprised by how good the image quality is - it produces very usable images at that range. Prior to this I always looked at digital zoom as useless unless you are photographing aliens getting out of a flying saucer and have to stay out of range of their ray guns. Of course it is not perfect. I wish it focused a little faster in still photo modes, but it's fine in most situations

The media could not be loaded. For those times when I don't want to carry my DSLR, this camera provides an excellent alternative. The image quality is excellent. I'm attaching two images taken in macro mode with fill flash, and one video

 This is a very unique lens. You're not going to find it anywhere else in Leica's lineup. What also is special about this lens? Not only is it extremely sharp, but it does have a macro function so you can twist the front part of the lens go into macro mode. You combine this with the crop modes and you can get some really interesting macro shots
