It does overexpose a bit in bright conditions but it's not egregious and I find dialing in -1/2 EV will usually correct things - but this is a pretty typical issue with most enthusiast compacts. The lens is slower than its more expensive line mates but generally offers about the same level of optical quality (sharp in the center at all focal lengths but soft corners at telephoto), overall it's a pretty decent lens. Video also looks pretty good, sharp with great color. Autofocus performance is satisfactory, not great

The digital zoom goes out to 20x, and I was really surprised by how good the image quality is - it produces very usable images at that range. Prior to this I always looked at digital zoom as useless unless you are photographing aliens getting out of a flying saucer and have to stay out of range of their ray guns. Of course it is not perfect. I wish it focused a little faster in still photo modes, but it's fine in most situations

If there are any camera designers reading this - a small, single function optical viewfinder that shows a frame outline is all that is really needed since the LCD and automation can handle the rest. The zoom range on the G9X modest but note it covers the same angle of view as a 28-85mm kit lens on a full frame DLSR (or 18-55mm on an APS-C DSLR). A greater zoom range would likely add to weight and dimension thus negating the "pocket camera" designation. Besides, the above cited kit lenses handle most of what most of us need most of the time
