Part of Canon's entry-level Rebel lineup, the T7 is a great option for beginner photographers, thanks to its simple design and intuitive menu system. Canon also has a ton of E and EF-mount lenses for its APS-C DSLRs, so you can upgrade to better lenses as your skill grows.

Inside the camera is a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, and it delivers very good image quality overall, with detailed, color-accurate photos straight out of the camera, though its noise handling is just okay, with a lot of noise at higher ISO settings in low light. That said, it feels fairly comfortable to shoot with, and its optical viewfinder gives you a lag-free, unfiltered view of your subjects. Though the camera doesn't have in-body image stabilization (IBIS), it also does an impressive job reducing handheld camera shake when using the optically stabilized 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

At this price point, build quality feels cheaper and more plasticky than pricier models, and you don't get anything fancy like weather sealing or even a tilting screen.

However, underneath that modest exterior is a high-resolution APS-C sensor that's still fairly capable in image quality. Since this is an older, cheaper model than the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 or the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, it doesn't perform quite as well in dynamic range and noise handling. However, it's still very good for the price, and you can always upgrade your lens down the line for better results.

The best all-around camera we've tested for under $500 is the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. This means you can easily upgrade to better lenses, which will make all the difference in your photography as your skills grow. That said, its AF system is a lot more rudimentary than the AF found on mirrorless alternatives like the M50 II, and it can only shoot at a max 3 fps burst rate, meaning this isn't the best option for sports or fast-moving subjects. Still, this is a good choice if you want a relatively cheap interchangeable-lens camera kit to get started with.

The Nikon D500 is essentially a mini D5 with a smaller sensor and no built-in vertical grip.
Instead of a full-frame sensor, the D500 uses a 20.9MP APS-C sensor with excellent JPEG and Raw image quality. The AF system and subject tracking capabilities are ripped right from the D5 and as you might have guessed, they're class-leading. The burst shooting performance maxes out at 10 fps, which is still fast enough for just about any subject. It can also shoot decent-looking 4K video.
The D500's build quality, while not D5-level, is still very good. The camera is weather-sealed and built to withstand hard use in tough conditions. The D500 is among the best APS-C camera we've ever tested and very much worthy of your consideration.

 I would have liked to have seen personally that the touch screen worked on all the features and then the user could select what they want it to be engaged for and not engaged. For I mean everything else on an icon is customizable, but at least this is a good first step. You guys, so I'm going to take a shot here. I can take it at f7, I'm getting about 125th of a second now with the stabilizer, of course

 At the same time, you give it a few seconds and what the cameras going to do is it's going to automatically micro adjust that particular lens with that particular body. I mean this is genius. I don't know why we ever had to deal with this in the past. You know trying to focus on rulers and lens calibrator is and then having to do these plus and minus values hoping to get things zero

 In the image which is quite difficult to take out in post, I would really recommend going to something like Sony's a 6300 if you're doing a lot of low-light shooting and you want to crop sensor camera. The D 500 had two major issues. That kind of drove me crazy today, one of which Nikon could probably fix in the follow up model. The other one is kind of not going to go anywhere

 This just makes sense, so I'm not finding it confusing at all. Overall, it's a great grip, a great feel. I love the autofocus selector switch here. This new joystick is very positive, very easy to use

Nikon D500 Hands-On Field Test

 The latter groups five points together to make it quicker to move points around and lock onto your subject. This is a feature that's in several of Nikon's full-frame SLRs, but has been absent from its DX line to this point.

 However, there is some visible smudging of details. Realistically you can push the D500 to ISO 1600 without any noticeable loss of image fidelity, with just a slight drop in clarity at ISO 3200. Details start to show some blur at ISO 6400 and ISO 12800. At ISO 25600 and ISO 51200 images are noticeably blurred

 The D500 does a phenomenal job following a subject when shooting in AF-C mode with 3D tracking enabled. I used this setting to shoot a polo scrimmage and found that the camera had no problems keeping track of individual players, even as they crossed paths with others wearing the same jersey and riding a similar horse.

g. higher bitrates, lossless recording formats, etc - the only real limitation it has right now is that 4K video is taken from a significantly smaller crop of the sensor than other video modes (not to mention photos). Sometimes this is convenient (e.g

 you pull your phone out to do something else, and forget to bring SnapBridge back to the front afterwards). As a wildlife & nature photographer I ultimately still need a dedicated GPS dongle attached at all times, in order for geotagging to actually work reliably. The only good thing I can say about SnapBridge is that while it's active in GPS sync mode it barely makes a difference to the D500's battery life, though it shouldn't given it hardly ever syncs anyway. It does drain your mobile phone battery at noticeable rate, though

 It's quite a bit bigger than any the the other Nikon DX line, at least post-D300s. Personally I like the larger size in most cases - it leads to a larger hand grip which makes it significantly nicer to use for long durations, vs smaller DSLRs. It's also not particularly heavy, despite its size, which is nice.  4K video: I'm not a frequent videographer, so in theory I shouldn't care much about this… but, the difference in quality between the video on the D500 and all of Nikon's prior cameras - DX or FX - is huge

This camera would not talk properly to my Nikor 55-300 lens, causing many misses. I checked a number of settings and nothing would resolve it, so I sent it back. I do not rule out it being a lens problem, however the lens has no issues with my D7100, and it is rated to be compatible with the D500. I also have no other autofocus lenses to try

AF Was a dud

The one that Digital Direct sent me was a bit of a dud--lots of noise when this low noise is supposed to be one of its features.

 And i’ve got to say it’s incredibly impressive.  The colours it reproduces are very nice and the detail is definitely there.  Compred to something like the Canon 7d mark ii, the sharpness of the 4k to the 1080p really is night and day.  Now one few drawback of the nikon d500 though is that it does crop the video quite a lot when shooting 4k

  If you’re coming from a lower end nikon body, the shipe of it is a little different, but with it’s 1x magnification, it works very quite well.  -  Let’s talk quickly about the menus on the D500.  If you’ve ever used a Nikon DSLR, you’ll feel right at home using the D500. The menus are pretty feature packed with a lot of different options, especially once you move into full manual mode

 So if you do know you’re going to be wanting to shoot in 4k, you’ll want to make sure you have a wide enough lens.  One other nice thing is that the d500 can shoot a full 30 minutes of video, cpmapred to just 3 minutes on the more expensive nikon d5. To me that’s a pretty big deal and something to consider if you are choosing between the two.  One other nice feature is that you can create timelapses in the camera which is a lot of fun, and something that again emphasizes that Nikon is really trying to gain a bit more marketshare in the video market

 1/8 sec at f7.1, ISO 100, hand-held with the D500 and 16-80 at 16mm. Not bad for a 5x zoom walk-around lens.

 Robust build quality, menus familiar to Nikon shooters, and the flippy screen is more useful than you can imagine until you use one. Recommendations; Lexar's 2933x XQD card for main memory works great; the Lexar 1000x SD card for backup had initial problems talking with the D500 but Lexar replaced it promptly with a newly revised card (new firmware) and that now works great. Most important: the 16-80mm Nikon VR lens released with this body is fantastic, a must-buy new normal lens for Nikon DX. Not the build quality or weight of the mid-range FX lens, but sharp, contrasty, quick enough in focusing, great smudge-resistant coating, and unreal VR capabilities
