Also for an option for a local bike shop brand the Cannondale CAAD Optimo 4. It's a little more price than the Tomasso for same spec but better reputation, and the big draw is it assembled by your local bike shop and any good local bike shop will help you properly size and adjust the fit of the bike. It's also cheaper than the equivalent Trek and specialized as well as better than the equivalent giant (base giant contend doesn't have carbon fork) so that's why it's my local bike shop recommendation.

I'm in the market for a bicycle after my previous bike -- a Tommaso Forcella I'd bought about four years ago -- was stolen. I'm looking for some recommendations based on the below info:

* I'm a man and just over 6' tall.
* I use the bike primarily for my 4-mile commute into downtown Boston, plus a portion of my other general transport.
* I very occasionally ride for exercise and have a mild interest in touring, which in all likelihood I won't pursue very much but would ideally like a bike capable of handling.
* Though I know the above would suggest a hybrid bike, I'm leaning heavily towards another road bike, for two reasons:
   * I need to be able to carry the bike up a very narrow staircase, which realistically means being able to hold it vertically in front of me, which means weight becomes a significant factor
   * I definitely get more enjoyment out of riding on a lighter bike
* I'm ideally looking for drop bars
* I will need to be able to mount a rear rack with a basket (or maybe panniers) on the back
* I'd like to spend not more than $1000 if possible -- I'm willing to go a little beyond that if necessary to get the best value, but ideally I'd really like to be closer to the $750 range.

Overall, I liked my Forcella and right now my leading option would just be to buy another. But I didn't *love* my old bike, mostly because despite me buying a Large which is meant for riders 5'11"-6'2", it always felt very slightly too small to me -- to get to a point where I felt like I was getting good extension on my downstroke, I had to have the seatpost at its absolute highest, and even then I didn't feel quite right compared to the bike I had previous to the Forcella (an older steel bike). Also, compared to that previous bike I had a lot more issues with pedal strikes on the roadway when making tight turns at speed with the Forcella. I'm by no means an expert rider though, so it's definitely possible that I was overextending.

Does anybody have any recommendations that come to mind based on the above? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with what I know (mostly) works in the Forcella? Does anybody have thoughts on my feeling that the bike was a little on the small side, despite the manufacturer putting me right in the middle of the size range I purchased?

 It is one thing that's a easy upgrade, but that's pretty common with entry-level bikes. Usually They're built for robustness and not speed. Here's a close-up of the crank, this is a non-series Shimano crank. It looks very similar to 105 though, so it really fits the bill pretty well

Looking for a good entry level road bike

 I purchased the medium frame and I am 5'9, so bang in on the size for me, I would say anyone at this height who wants more comfortable geometry should go up a frame as my seat is now a good few inches over the top of my handle bars. All in all the bike is solid, flys around with no issues and nobody moaned with the free try outs at my bike club. What went down very well there was the paintjob and the fact it looks different in light and darker conditions. The only niggle is the positioning of the rear gear cable, it seems to pop up from under the frame a bit early and if my right foot is out of position my heel can catch, this is not a problem when I have my cleats (Shimano A530s) on but is a problem for stop and start riding

800kms report - Just over 2 months

Size wise, it's slightly bigger if you comparing size S for both Triban 520 and Giant TCR, though by not much more.  I had to swap the stem to 60mm to keep within my comfort reach. 

This is an endurance geometry - it will ride slightly higher and less aggressive riding position than Giant TCR.  

 Tri-bands or or Decathlon's own Ergo fit. Saddle is absolutely fine and I found it pretty comfortable once I got used to it. And then in terms of the front end or the cockpit again, it's the in-house handlebars. Road bike handlebars from Tri-band I ride a medium frame and the bars come with a 100 mil stem at the front, which to be honest for me was quite a reach and I think a lot of new cyclists or cyclists not that used to road bikes will have a similar experience

Uh, I think the bike sells at 850 quid at the moment. which is, I think just under a thousand euros, just under 1200. I think for the money you're spending, you're getting a lot of bike and you're getting something that's pretty bomb proof

 Works quite well. Decent stopping power and pretty good in the wet as well. Essentially it's Shimano 105 components which is great. 50 34 at the front and then out of the shot you get an 11 32 cassette on the back

However, what you'll see I've done here is I've put a wolf tooth road link on the back and that's allowed me to move my derailleur sort of out and down and put a much bigger, almost mountain bike size cassette on on the rear. That's absolutely great for a lot of the hilly cycling that I like to do here in the Uk in places like the Peak District, the Lake District and Snowdonia

 In summary a truly great bike which is a joy to ride and no doubt will last a good few years, just factor in buying a decent wheel set to replace the stock wheels! The bike with decent wheels is unquestionably worth 5 stars, decathlon please listen to your customers in the reviews about these wheels they are far from expectable.
