 For $9/toner, and $28 for a Linkyo Drum, I'm money ahead from Brother supplies. And if I wreak the printer, I'm already money ahead.  If non-OEMs can produce supplies at this price point, and clearly they wouldn't they weren't profitable, then why can't Brother/OEMs? The printer cost was ~$200, and they charge $100 for a drum and $76/toner cart, $176 for toner/drum is nutty. As Tom Hanks said in "Big" - "I don't get it

I would have given this printer 5 stars EXCEPT for crooked sheet feeder scanning & UTP LAN issue

 No more flipping pages. I don't keep paper anymore as all bills are scanned to pdf. The footprint is about the same of my old HP Deskjets but it is quite a bit taller. Make sure you have the space for it

The last printer you’ll buy for a long time.

    I must reinstall drivers if I seek to change the type of connectivity.     Adjusting the print or scan quality is buried in the menu and for a while I couldn’t find it.    It’s noisy and clunky sounding.      Don’t buy this printer

Huge Disappointment

  Don't try reaching out to Brother, no phone numbers only referral to who know where.  Basic assistance could have solved the problems.  No Brothers for me in my future

In the budget category, we recommend the Brother MFC-L2710dw. It's a well-built and feature-rich all-in-one, with its main downside being that it can only print in black, so if you need color printing, this isn't for you. In terms of connectivity options, you get Ethernet, USB, and Wi-Fi, and it's compatible with Brother's iPrint&Scan mobile app, which allows you to print, copy, and even scan using your smartphone's camera.

As for its performance, this model can print very quickly, up to 32 pages per minute. It can perform double-sided printing, and it has a fairly large 250-page input tray, which will let you complete large print jobs with minimal interruptions. It can print almost 2000 pages with a single toner cartridge, and higher-yield cartridges are available. The toner is relatively inexpensive, which helps keep the cost-per-print low, but keep in mind that the drum unit is a separate piece that'll also need replacing.

For your scanning needs, the scanner on top has an automatic document feeder for scanning long documents; however, it can't perform double-sided scans, so you still have to flip the pages manually. The display screen is pretty small and isn't touch-sensitive, but at least there are plenty of buttons to help you navigate the menus, as well as a Numpad to enter your Wi-Fi password and such. So, if you have a small budget and don't need to print in color, this is definitely worth checking out.

If you prefer something cheaper for black-and-white printing, check out the Brother MFC-L2710DW. It doesn't yield as many pages at the Canon imageCLASS MF445dw, and its automatic document feeder doesn't support duplex scanning. However, it's cheaper, and its flatbed scanner has a higher scan resolution. It takes a bit longer to warm up, but subsequent pages print faster, which is good if you often print lengthy reports or papers. Even though its page yields are much lower, its cost-per-print is only marginally higher due to the much cheaper cartridges, which might be better if you don't plan to print very high volumes. It's currently difficult to find through our affiliates, but you'll likely have an easier time finding it through Office Depot.

If you prioritize large page yields and being able to quickly scan double-sided documents, go with the Canon. If you need something cheaper and need a higher-resolution scan, go with the Brother.

If you're looking for a budget laser model, the best printer for office use that we've tested is the Brother MFC-L2710DW. While it isn't in stock at some of our affiliate retailers, you can still find it available at other stores, like NewEgg, OfficeDepot, and Staples. On the flip side, if you want to save money, there's a cheaper variant called the Brother MFC-L2690DW, which lacks Ethernet connectivity and prints slightly slower.
