If your household prints pretty infrequently, and most of your prints are usually recipes, essays, or reports, the Brother MFC-L2710DW might be a good fit. This monochrome laser model doesn't require nearly as much maintenance as an inkjet printer, so you don't have to worry about any printheads getting clogged or breaking.

It has an excellent cartridge system, printing over a thousand pages before you need to replace the toner. The drum unit is a separate piece that you'll have to replace, but the cost-per-print is still remarkably cheap, allowing you to print economically in the long run. Additionally, it churns documents out remarkably quickly, at over 30 pages a minute. There's a high-resolution flatbed scanner, an automatic document feeder to easily process multi-page prints, and built-in fax.

Unfortunately, it's best to be sure that you don't need to print photos in color since it produces terrible-quality, monochrome-only photos. That said, it's easy to print your files from a variety of devices thanks to its great array of connectivity options and superb mobile app. It's currently hard to find through most of our affiliates, but you can still get it from Staples or Office Depot. All in all, it's an excellent choice if you need an all-in-one monochrome laser model that suits your needs.

In the budget category, we recommend the Brother MFC-L2710dw. It's a well-built and feature-rich all-in-one, with its main downside being that it can only print in black, so if you need color printing, this isn't for you. In terms of connectivity options, you get Ethernet, USB, and Wi-Fi, and it's compatible with Brother's iPrint&Scan mobile app, which allows you to print, copy, and even scan using your smartphone's camera.

As for its performance, this model can print very quickly, up to 32 pages per minute. It can perform double-sided printing, and it has a fairly large 250-page input tray, which will let you complete large print jobs with minimal interruptions. It can print almost 2000 pages with a single toner cartridge, and higher-yield cartridges are available. The toner is relatively inexpensive, which helps keep the cost-per-print low, but keep in mind that the drum unit is a separate piece that'll also need replacing.

For your scanning needs, the scanner on top has an automatic document feeder for scanning long documents; however, it can't perform double-sided scans, so you still have to flip the pages manually. The display screen is pretty small and isn't touch-sensitive, but at least there are plenty of buttons to help you navigate the menus, as well as a Numpad to enter your Wi-Fi password and such. So, if you have a small budget and don't need to print in color, this is definitely worth checking out.

If you prefer something cheaper for black-and-white printing, check out the Brother MFC-L2710DW. It doesn't yield as many pages at the Canon imageCLASS MF445dw, and its automatic document feeder doesn't support duplex scanning. However, it's cheaper, and its flatbed scanner has a higher scan resolution. It takes a bit longer to warm up, but subsequent pages print faster, which is good if you often print lengthy reports or papers. Even though its page yields are much lower, its cost-per-print is only marginally higher due to the much cheaper cartridges, which might be better if you don't plan to print very high volumes. It's currently difficult to find through our affiliates, but you'll likely have an easier time finding it through Office Depot.

If you prioritize large page yields and being able to quickly scan double-sided documents, go with the Canon. If you need something cheaper and need a higher-resolution scan, go with the Brother.

If you're looking for a budget laser model, the best printer for office use that we've tested is the Brother MFC-L2710DW. While it isn't in stock at some of our affiliate retailers, you can still find it available at other stores, like NewEgg, OfficeDepot, and Staples. This monochrome printer has both a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder, which is great whether you're scanning a stack of pages or a single page from a bound manual.

It prints incredibly fast at 32PPM and prints thousands of pages before the toner runs out. This means you won't need to replace the cartridge often, especially if you don't print regularly. Since it's a laser model, you don't need to worry about the printheads clogging if the printer goes unused for weeks. Also, it has a manual feeder and a large paper cassette that holds about 250 sheets, both of which can hold up to Legal-sized paper.

Unfortunately, its ADF can't scan double-sided sheets automatically, so it isn't the best choice if this is a feature you need for your office. Also, the display screen is really small, and the angle isn't adjustable, so there's less flexibility to place it in the best way, depending on the table's height. Otherwise, it's a great option if you're on a budget but still want something full of features.

If you only need to print in black, a monochrome laser printer might be a better fit. We recommend the Brother MFC-L2710DW. It doesn't require nearly as much maintenance as an inkjet printer since you don't have to worry about any printheads getting clogged, which is great if you don't print regularly. Its page yield is amazing at around 2000 pages, and the toner is relatively cheap. The downside is that it doesn't have the drum built into the cartridge, so you'll have to spend extra to replace the drum separately. It has a scanner with an automatic feeder but doesn't support duplex scanning.

This printer has many variants with slightly different features and performance, so if you need features like duplex scanning, NFC support, or a touch-sensitive display, you can go with the slightly more expensive Brother MFC-L2750DW. On the flip side, if you want to save money, there's a cheaper variant called the Brother MFC-L2690DW, which lacks Ethernet connectivity and prints slightly slower.
