 I don't think this is essential for a latte, but if you drink espresso your first cup will be lukewarm unless you let the machine fully heat up (which is long after all the lights are on). - The default recommended settings on the grinder are working like a charm, so we probably won't mess with them much. .. I was mostly wrong on all these counts. When I bought the machine, I found the Sbux Espresso Roast whole beans (around $13 for 18 oz) and Sbux vanilla flavor (around $25 for pack of four 12 oz bottles)

 I am very happy with this and really enjoy the smell of the beans and process of making the drinks. You do need to watch the beans level (the hopper is small) and the water tank is also small - I have run out of both beans mid-grind and water mid-brew by not paying attention but otherwise this machine is pretty straight forward. I did experiment with steaming milk and wasn't a big deal but you can't really steam that much milk at a time with small carafe and steam wand (made more for 8 oz. mug drink vs

 Buying those same 62 drinks at Sbux would have cost $415 (not count tip I always leave so actually closer to $500 for 62 triple venti Ice lattes at Sbux costing nearly $7 each + tip. So I figure I when just considering supplies I used $30 in beans and syrup and at around $4 per gallon, I have used maybe another $20 in Milk so $50 total in supplies about vs. around $500 for buying the drinks at Sbux including tip means I paying 10% what I used to and have saved $450 ($150 less than I paid for the machine) in a single month on the drinks for me and my daughter. As I started off saying, it does take me 15 minutes from start to finish of cleanup to make those two drinks but it could be half that without cleanup every time but I also never wait in a drive through line

 The last straw that made me buy it on Prime Day discount a month ago was that price of my daily Starbucks drink (iced venti vanilla latte) shot up from $5 something to nearly $7. I was reluctant previously because I figured it would take a bunch of time to make myself, be a pain to clean up and I probably couldn't make it taste the same as the Sbux I enjoy..

Shot looked good, smelled good but had too much of an acidic sour taste to it still in my opinion. I’m using a breville barista express and filtered water, letting the porta filter heat up before and using a scale and timer for everything. Am I missing something else here to make the taste more enjoyable or maybe I’m just not a pure espresso drinker?

 The expectation for a great tasting espresso is quality water, give our well water source we purchase water for cooking and consumption. Would be nice if there was a better way to recover the dispensed water after use to be reused but since the tray also traps grounds, it's useless for reuse. For now I save this for watering plants.

...  CONSISTENT SUCCESS! I am now dialed in on my dedicated espresso grinder and am now able to pull the following shot consistently "the first time and every time" and the taste is really delicious

 17.5gm beans, medium roast, perfectly and consistently freshly ground espresso, perfectly tampered, 194F brew temp, 4 second pre infusion, 27 second water flow after infusion, 35gm of brewed espresso, beautiful crema on top. Stir with silver spoon, (not born with it.

  We vacillated between many brands and options but ultimately we narrowed our choice down to machines by Breville because they provided the most versatility and ease of use. We specifically chose the Breville Barista Express due to it's smaller design  I'm going to preface this review by saying an espresso machine is one of those things that you have to do the math on to decide if it's a worthy purchase for your home, between my partner and I we typically each have two lattes a day. If we were going to Starbucks that would be $3.65 each drink

even if you're a complete novice you'll still be making lattes and other popular drinks in no time. The most intimidating part was the milk frothing process, but it's consistent and predictable and really easy once you give it one or two tries.  FLAVOR This machine makes espresso shots that rival what I was getting at Starbucks, in fact when we made our first drink we were delighted at how much richer and cleaner tasting it was compared to what we were used to getting at Starbucks. Once you make your own latte it's going to be hard to drink anything else

 The unit heats up quickly and provides piping hot water within 30 seconds, enough time for you to pour your milk of choice in the stainless steel milk frothing pitcher. From this point you simply turn a dial on the side of the unit to the steam function inserter your steam wand and try to stimulate the milk into a gentle whirlpool motion, this process takes less than 2 minutes depending on how hot your like to steam your milk.  The temperature of the latte will be the temperature of the milk. Unless you want to pre-heat the cup before the whole process, you want the milk as hot as possible, but not so hot that it will alter the taste of the drink.  Everyday usage: 1. Wait 20 min or so for the machine to pre-heat

  These are the tips that made all the difference for me:  1. You want to use the single walled filter to get a real espresso with real crema. The double walled will give you a crappy, Keurig like cup of coffee. 2

That’s quite an expensive leap for someone who “really did not like coffee all that much” and had already “decided coffee wasn’t for me.”

I really did not like coffee all that much, I thought it was too bitter, too musty, etc.  
Then i fell down the rabbithole.

I got curious, bought a cheap handgrinder, got REALLY frustrated, decided coffee wasn't for me at all  
got curious again, got a comandante c40 which improved things DRAMATICALLY, but still stuck to the beans I was using at the time, which were some supermarket lavazza beans. Now, they were noticably better than everything I was used to, but when I started making pourovers I really, really ran face first into all the problems with them. My philosophy behind sticking with the bad beans is that I could have something to practise technique with, and if I could learn how to make the supermarket beans taste good, I could probably make amazing coffee with good beans. 

However, at a certain point there wasn't anything I could do to make things taste any better. I'd gotten some pretty ok coffee out of it in the beginning, when I was still clumsy with pouring and making underextracted brews. It made weak coffee with a nice strong caramel/cream scent that I liked a lot. When I got better at it and my extraction went up, the coffee got worse and worse. It still had the same lovely fragrance that I loved, but it just started tasting of cardboard. I decided to investigate, I brewed at a lot of different grind settings, and apart from it getting weaker and more hollow at coarser settings and more musty and cardboardy to bitter at finer settings.

In hindsight, it's pretty obvious. I recently ordered some good coffee beans from a local roastery, and the difference is clear as day. I compared what I could see, I smelled the beans and even ate a coffee bean or 2. Some things I learned from that:

1. Beans should smell and taste good and aromatic, not like dirt and cardboard
2. There shouldn't be broken beans in the bag
3. A good grind doesn't improve your coffee, it only gives you clarity on it's quality.

When I brewed with the new coffee I got, I had some coffee from Panama, even though it acted way different because of the lighter roast, and I didn't get the grind down perfectly first try, i could taste SO much, way more than I could ever dream of with the other beans. If you got a good grinder, you shouldn't have to fight for at least an okay tasting cup of coffee. The coffee i got was much more closer to tea than I ever imagined coffee could be. It had this earl-grey like quality both in astringency and presence of this bergamot taste, citrussy and herb-like, with notes of thyme rising up to my nose after I took a sip. Far better than having a hit of nice roasty sweetness followed by glue and paper and phenolic notes.

Having a good grinder is absolutely key, but having good coffee is most certainly not to be underestimated either. I'm having a lot of fun with it, it makes the brewing into a much more culinary experience. I don't think i could ever go back. Thanks to the community for answering my questions and teaching me about this interesting world!
