The model I've been looking at closest is the BenQ HT2050a (known as the W1110 in the EU) as it seems to offer the best solution to my somewhat scattered needs.

 On the fan noise I expected better but once I get home I’ll test it in real life case and see how it works. The speaker I will report back on to see if it improves with time.

Great picture even in brightly lit room, great sound.

  I see BenQ has a HT2550  refurb for $700.  The closest new one they have is the HT3550 for $1400.

I am currently using a cheap 1080p vankyo projector, it has a good screen size at a short distance and picture quality is decent for the price I payed, I was looking to upgrade to a higher quality 1080p projector such as the benQ th585. I would like something brighter and clearer, I was wondering if it would be a better investment to get a lower end 4K projector and which one would be recommended for 120 inch projection at roughly 3.5m. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Best budget 4K projector

 Audio output is a single headphone jack so you'll need to get your surround sound a different way. Lastly it has one USB port but this is intended as a power output to power a dongle (Firestick, Chromecast etc) and as such will not connect your phone or other device to the projector input image. I am using a Chromecast 4th gen as my main content caster and from what I have read this USB output will not sufficiently power the device so have had to plug into the wall leaving the USB power source totally redundant. We only need HDMI so I don't really mind but for the sake of others reflect on what i/o connectors you need before buying

There is an old school VGA PC input, and an ancient history RS-232 which I doubt anyone will ever use. Fantastic picture even with ambient light - I do have a few considerations to share...

 So far my research has led me to the BenQ HT2050A, BenQ TH685, ViewSonic PX7030HD, and Optima HD146X.

  I really love watching things with this projector, but I don't necessarily love the projector due to these various issues. BenQ can do better, and while they should be proud of the hardware design for the most part, they should really have spent a bit more time on the fans and thinking through the lens shift, and the software/firmware team should just be fired (I know, that sounds harsh, but seriously, no sleep function!?!?..

 It should be able to just power right back on at any point in the shutdown process.  Many of the cons are nitpicks, but they're really quite ridiculous things that I just can't fathom why they are the way they are, and they could probably be fixed through an update. If not for these stupid design decisions and the lens shift limitation, this would easily be a 4-star projector. With those improvements and a reduction in noise of 2-3dB, it would be 5-stars

Great picture and brightness, lens shift and software could use improvement

 HDMI cable. I had no trouble with the cable coming from my cable box. I hooked up my device with a shorter cable and I had no issues. I ordered an HDMI signal booster and hopefully that will fix the issue

  Update: I bought the booster and that seemed to fix my "Out of Range" and "Searching for Signal" issue. I've included a product link as well. For the power source, I did what another user suggested. I used an Apple iPhone charger block

 If you don’t have an audio system to connect and rely on the projector then benq has better sound quality compared to Epson. I got the 2250 at a great price during a sale so maybe comparing it to th685 isn’t fair but I think feature wise Epson is better overall.

 NO horizontal lens shift is a pain and makes it extremely difficult to setup if you’re not positioning the device in the center and at a certain height. Epson is much easier to setup and is flexible at projecting from different angles. If you don’t have an audio system to connect and rely on the projector then benq has better sound quality compared to Epson. I got the 2250 at a great price during a sale so maybe comparing it to th685 isn’t fair but I think feature wise Epson is better overall

 A word of caution though, unless you have better regulations over the pond the contrast numbers stated between different brands can't honestly be compared head2head as each company seems to have their own way of tracking and measuring. Optoma's 10000:1 may different from Epson's 10000:1 which may be different from BenQ's 10000:1 so it's best to find a reviewer who can try and standardize that for more proper comparison.

1. Upgrade the projector, from BenQ W1070 to BenQ W2700 (HT3550 in US), to obtain a nice 4k/HDR image. The contrast would not improve though. Optoma UHD 50 is also a possibility. Other suggestions maybe ? Used or new, around 1000-1500 euros.
2. Go to OLED 65". Loose the size but increase the quality, and avoid the trouble.  Did someone go from my situation to an OLED 65" and does not regret it ?
3. Change the screen for an ALR screen, to improve constrast. I am also open to DIY project, if you know any way to build a good screen in Europe ? Fixed screen is also fine for me.
4. Install some kind of black curtain around the screen may help ?

Upgrade from BenQ W1070

 with 1080p Blu Ray content I was blown away with the clarity and depth of this projector. I also have a Darbee Darblet to help enhance depth and sharpness (highly recommended) but even without the Darblet the clarity and sharpness blew my old projector away. -Brightness is GREAT! This is a bonafide light cannon. With Brilliant Color and Smart Eco on with the Gamma set to 2

 I needed the top of the projected image to be 7" below the center of the lens at 8'4" away. I set the lens shift all the way "Up" on the W1070 (which is "Down" if ceiling mounting") and that got me the EXACT offset I needed for the image to sit square. Very happy and relieved that my previous calcuations were correct and didn't have to resport to image distorting digital keystone and zoom. Keep in mind that this projector has an offset so the image will be projected UP if table mounted and DOWN if ceiling mounted

One of the best 1080p 3D projectors out there, period.

 Now let's say you're done with your 3D games, you want to watch a 3D movie, I mentioned how simple it is to go source, HDMI 2, and then now we can watch movies on our 3D Blu-ray player. Now resolutions and sizes are interesting, but unless you're going to get a bright, high contrast image that looks fantastic, then it's totally meaningless. So it's got a Texas Instruments DarkChip 3 processor in here. It's capable of producing up to 2,000 lumens of brightness, which means that even in a non-ideal scenario, you'll be able to get a very good image as long as you don't go completely unreasonable in terms of your screen size

 You need the driver, which comes for free if you're already an NVIDIA 3D Vision user. So if you have one of these IR emitters, you can install it for nothing. Otherwise, you pay 40 bucks, you install the driver, and you are pretty much ready to go. So we've got our setup going now

 I got to tell you guys, the 3D experience on a DLP projector is so much better than what you experience on an LCD monitor. Because LCD pixels don't necessarily shift fast enough from color to color and from image to image, you run into a situation where you have a lot of crosstalk where the left image shows up a little bit as a ghost in the right eye and the other way around. With DLP, you do not run into that at all. The images are clearly separated and it looks absolutely outstanding
