- Temp-controlled electric kettle. Not a gooseneck, but I get around that by transferring the right volume of water to a small gooseneck measuring cup thing. Works for now.

Curious to know what everyone's home setup looks like in regards to making coffee, and what you all use on the regular. My own collection is pretty humble:

### Regular rotation

- V60 (I switched from the Hario ceramic to the all-in-one decanter)
- Bonavita Connoisseur 8-cup drip (my wife wanted this for Christmas, and it makes REALLY tasty coffee. Currently the most frequently used for me.)

### Mostly unused

- French press (Bodum 17 &amp; 34oz - were used as the decanter for my V60, but haven't made this in quite a while)
- Aeropress (I made one cup the day Hoffman's video came out, and none since)

So I’ve followed this sub for a while and feel like maybe I’m confused about the purpose. If so, please set me straight! 

I feel like 70% of what I see here is like ancient, beat up boots from 1960 or people’s grandparents’ cast iron pots. Tupperware from 1960, old pocket knives from 1910, thrifted leather jackets, mixers from the 70’s, etc.

Which are all cool! But....I’m interested in actually buying modern-day products that last a long time. The issues I have with items like the above are:

1) What a company made 50 years ago isn’t necessarily representative of what they’re making today. Different manufacturing processes, cheaper materials, sometimes entirely different ownership of the company, etc. It’s like someone saying “the old Ford Model T was really sturdy, so you should go buy a Fiesta.”

2) A lot of the brands featured no longer exist or whatever model product isn’t made anymore.

I’m looking for a sub that features modern(ish) products that people have found to be high quality and durable. That seem like they could last for life. 

Like, maybe you bought boots in 2010 and they’re still going strong. Maybe those measuring cups you bought on amazon survived a fire or a transatlantic move and they’re still for sale. Or a pair of jeans that you wore every day on a farm and haven’t needed patching in years.

Is there a sub like that? It often seems like this sub is just a place where people post pictures of things that other users can’t actually buy anymore, which feels like it defeats the purpose of “buy it for life.”

If you don’t need a grinder for travel, I would highly recommend “buy once , cry once” on a good electric.  You are looking at close to $200 US for the grinder and single dose hopper (not necessary, but I love having it, it also quiets the action).

My morning's are quite rushed as it is and sometimes I don't want to spend 3 mins grinding on my Hario mini - its fine but not as consistent in size. I enjoy doing it in the afternoon/weekends though.

 I recently tried by buying 1 bag of beans to grind on slower days and another ground on purchase from the roaster for my early mornings. I finish all within a month so the pre-ground doesn't go off ?  Fair compromise ? Anyone else does this ? 

Ideally if I could I would save up and buy a class electric grinder

I don't taste a noticeable difference in flavor between freshly ground and the bags we would pre-grind at Costco. For the Unfancy Coffee Person

 It makes life easier for you, it works well, and makes the entire process so much more enjoyable. With an AP compared to a lot of other brew methods you end up with something a lot finer, which isn't the normal range for a blade grinder.  It's definitely going to improve the quality of life and cup for you.

I use a blade grinder and haven’t given much thought into purchasing on a burr grinder. This is because I read somewhere that burr grinders aren’t as important when doing inversion brewing methods. Would spending upwards of $50 on a burr grinder make that much of a flavor difference, if any?

Should I get a burr grinder for aeropress?

Another vote for the Baratza Encore here. For anything other than espresso it's great and definitely the best bang for your buck. I have the Virtuoso myself, which is one step up from the Encore. It comes with upgraded burrs and a couple other nice things such as a metal body and a timer for grinding
