I've personally settled on the Mystery Ranch packs (for now at least). The Scree 32 weighs around 1kg with the belt taken off (you can always feed a normal belt through the lumbar later on) holds a tablet in the water-bladder sleeve, has enough organization to keep me happy (1 main 32L bucket, 2 quick grabs, 2 internal compartments, 2 mesh waterbottle holders) is more durable than the Farpoint, and more comfortable.

 It's not the comfiest pack in the world, but it's comfy enough. It's not a hiking pack, but it can be used as one. It's not the heaviest pack in the world, but its not the lightest. It's carry on

The Farpoint doesn't have the best laptop compartment, but it has one. The waterbottle pockets are weird and annoying to use, but they're there. It doesnt have the best organization, but it has some. It has compression straps, but they're in an annoying place

I am a long time fan of Farpoint 40, but the only problem I have with it is it's relatively massive 1.5kg weight.

I am looking for a replacement that would be exactly the same in terms of functionality (large straps, 40~ ish liters, optimized for travel), but half the weight, ideally in the area of 0.5-0.8kg.

I am yet to find any decent replacement, and ultralight selection does not seem to be a good option cause it is not very suitable for urban travel. Any advice?

Lighter Farpoint 40 alternative

 The only issue I have, and I didn't really take the time to figure out how to avoid it, although I'm sure it is avoidable, is if you pack either the main compartment or the fidlock compartment a certain way, it kind of sags the front compartment to the point the fidlock is wrapped down under the bag in such a way that it can't functionally be opened without kind of lifting the bottom of the bag. It's kind of difficult to explain, and I'm pretty positive it's just the way I was packing it (Too much weight in a certain part of the bag?). It is an annoyance, but not a deal breaker.

For me, the divider in the MR 3-Way is really the issue that I have. It's a great bag otherwise, and I've kept it and used it for short one bag trips, it's great under the seat of an airplane. 

A couple small nitpicks, the backpack strap stowage, while pretty common, is not my favorite system. It isn't something you'd want to do while walking. I prefer having flaps that hide the straps as opposed to stuffing them. This is isn't a deal breaker and I knew this going into the purchase

The one issue that stopped me from using the bag as a daily carry is the divider in the main compartment. For my specific carry, it didn't work well. It's the same thing that would prevent a camera cube from sitting in there without expanding the bag. There's a divider that separates the main compartment and it runs nearly down the middle, cutting the ability to carry bulky items in either the "front" half of the main compartment or the "rear" half completely as neither side was wide enough

For starters, as mentioned, the messenger strap is junk for a bag of this price. It's a strap of single webbing with two plastic buckles. I purchased it in black and had a strap that I could switch to it, otherwise I would have ordered something different the day I received the bag.

Really like the look of this pack but don't know if it would fit a dslr inside. Anyone have any idea if one would fit?

Checks all the Boxes

Recently received the pack, and it lives up to everything you'd expect from Mystery Ranch. Great ergonomics, very adjustable and comfortable. I love how slim and tall it is, and how close it sticks to my back. I can comfortably secure the pack close, so it doesn't swing around while I'm doing whatever I need to do

Almost, but not quite.

   For example, when hiking with groups, frequent stops would be needed so that fellow hikers could unfasten and remove their svelte looking packs, root through them, and eventually pull out camera, sunscreen, snack, bottle, or whatever they needed before putting it back and getting the pack back on.   In pursuit of sleek style, the packs lacked good access to essential gear that should have been accessible underway and without removing the pack.    When a heavier load was needed, such as more water on an extended high desert hike, the flimsy hip belts and shoulder suspensions were inadequate.  For day-and-a-half trips and day trips where a lot of gear is needed, a few years ago I settled on a Tri-Zip with Mystery Ranch's legendary adjustable shoulder and hip suspension, and found it to be the most comfortable system I had ever tried

    When a heavier load was needed, such as more water on an extended high desert hike, the flimsy hip belts and shoulder suspensions were inadequate.  For day-and-a-half trips and day trips where a lot of gear is needed, a few years ago I settled on a Tri-Zip with Mystery Ranch's legendary adjustable shoulder and hip suspension, and found it to be the most comfortable system I had ever tried.   There is not enough accessible on-the-go storage, but I solved that  nicely by attaching pouches to the abundant Molle webbing.    The only downside has been that the Tri-Zip pack was larger, wider and heavier than is needed for the bulk of my dayhiking

   There are a several useful partitions in the main compartment, but none that interfere with the ability to store larger or longer gear such as a packable fly rod.   The pack worked well with several of my longer, taller hydration reservoirs that I tried in it and the drinking tube is conveniently held by releasable elastic retainers on the shoulder strap, the best of any I have seen yet.   Comfort while hiking was everything I had come to expect with the larger Tri-Zip, but in a smaller package suited to the majority of my explorations while still including the best "big pack" features, accessibility,  and impressive load carrying capabilities.

I have been fortunate to live in the high country West adjacent to wilderness for several decades and to hike several days a week every week of the year.   I always carry a daypack or lumbar pack and have heavily used quite a number of packs from all major manufacturers over the years.  More recently I have relied on trusted online reviews in picking packs.   Even then, up until now, with my new Mystery Ranch Scapegoat 25, I had not yet found a smaller to mid-sized daypack that met all of my demanding criteria

Best All Around Daypack Yet - not just for hunting

I purchased this pack for day trips in the backcountry in order to hold a hydration system, optics, and DSLR camera gear. Although it is advertised as a 25 liter pack, it holds far more than I expected and seems to be closer to a 35 liter. I can fit all of the gear listed above including rain gear and food without overloading. It has a strong frame and a rigid hip belt

 The weatherproof zippers are incredibly smooth and strong, unlike most from other companies. I would certainly purchase this pack again.
