 I finally decided to ditch the USB connection and go for Bluetooth. It was terrible. The Bluetooth was choppy and constantly had the audio going in and out. I upgraded my BIOS, audio card and Bluetooth firmware and there zero improvement

Sounds great when they work

My previous reference point is a set of Fluance AI40, and a set of Audioengine A2 on a nuforce udaq. The B&W, despite being 24 years old, clean the floor with both of them. Crystal clear highs, smooth and punchy bass that I never found the bottom of. Mids were lacking a little, but a slight tweak on the EQ and they’re as perfect as my ear can hear

Have to brag about my thrift store score of a lifetime

  I'd say the passive aspect of these speakers is great for the price point but without the steelaeries engine (software on laptop), using dts headphone surround sound setting in windows, they lose a lot of the oomph I like in my music while watching movies or tvs.  With the setup through laptop, dts surround, steel series headset base station, to speakers, I feel that the bass is good for a 2.0 setup.

0 from my laptop but still lackluster.  From headphone port of laptop, a $3,000 laptop with decent audio chip, lackluster.  Haven't spent much time with a direct usb connection from laptop to speakers, but I believe it was better than headphone aux port.  I have a steelseries wireless pro headset, whose base station has a safe in it and aux port in and out

When using the aux port from the steelseries base station to the speakers, basically pre-amped at that point, the speakers are really quite good and worth the price tag.  I dont think I'd be satisfied at this price if I didn't already have a $300 wireless headset whose base station acted as an intermediary between laptop and speakers

  I know my laptop is bluetooth 5.0, but not impressed at all.  Maybe the bluetooth protocol just sucks. Seems like an audio only wireless signal protocol should be higher quality after this many years of refinement imho

I used to use professional studio monitors (not super expensive ones, just modest JBL or KRK), but recently had to downsize my space. Even though I moved from an external MOTU and those large monitors to these small speakers, for most of what I do except the most detailed music listening, these are very good. The bass can be a little too much - but that may be due to my constrained installation location, and I haven't figured out how to put an EQ in Windows.  They're very convenient to use: just plug in the USB

 Still, that is a rare need so I'm not going to ding them.  Overall, I am very happy with the quality and convenience (USB connection) for the small size. I only wish they were a bit less expensive.

 My onboard iMac speakers sounded better. To put the icing on the cake, the Bluetooth had such a lag that I couldn’t even watch a movie as the sound was so out of sync. So.

..ESPECIALLY for the PRICE! Muddy sound: poor low end response in the 125-250 range, and totally muffled high end. 2-16 khz needed a major boost to get anything to sound clear

 Even as someone who was significantly less knowledgeable in audio reproduction, I was still able to appreciate the sound these speakers put out. I will not go too in depth about bass, as I had only used these speakers without a subwoofer for about a couple hours total, just know that it is fairly average for casual music listening but sub-par if you decide to utilize it for film/bass-dependent music.  CURRENT PERSPECTIVE: Disregarding the fact that these had blown out on me, I currently believe these speakers are not worth the absurdly high price. Although I still believe the mid-range is warm and quite rich, both the low-end and high-end struggle to reproduce sounds nicely

 These are not my current opinions.  These speakers were an upgrade from the Creative Sound BlasterX Kratos S5 2.1 Gaming Speaker, which was a muddied and lack-luster 2.1 system

 At the time, however, they were average sounding to me. I wanted to upgrade to something of the same size profile that had a clearer and fuller profile. I gravitated toward the A2+, as I believed in the misconception that these were phenomenal sounding high fidelity speakers (They do not claim to be this, but certain reviews of this product facilitated that idea). I had also seen them on a multitude of setups and thought they fit aesthetic of my own

 These speakers still look phenomenal though, and packaging is premium enough to justify a higher price tag, but not $260. For reference, as soon as I refunded my A2+, I went ahead and purchased a pair of KRK RP5 G4 Studio Monitors for the exact same price (These monitors are also fairly controversial, but I personally really enjoy their soundstage and less colored sound).  WRAPPING THINGS UP (Pros and Cons):  Pros: - Spectacular packaging - Additional cables that allow for multiple ways to connect to a source - Rich mid-range for small profile - Premium build quality (hefty with a clean finish) - Smaller setups will benefit from the size - Volume does get relatively loud  Cons: - Highs are lacking clarity - Bass is quite average from 90hz to 200hz, anything below that is quite awful without a subwoofer - The speakers do not do a great job at stereo imaging - Speakers are impossible to EQ without a 3rd party software - The price is absurd for over glorified desktop speakers - Subtle details in music get lost, making these speakers terrible for mixing/mastering (This is not what these speakers are intended for, but it is something to keep in mind) - Personally, these blew out on me twice at pretty normal listening volumes.  A few notes: - I do not believe these speakers are horrible, I just think the price you pay for them is not justified

Phenomenal looking speaker, not so phenomenal sounding.

 (As an aside, I got the white ones and they are very cool-looking, although adding the black speaker stands below them will add a cluttered look to my desk and detract from the nice design.)

 So the good news is that these are good speakers; the bad news is that you need to buy the speaker stands, adding an extra $29 to an already expensive set of computer speakers (I currently have folded dish towels beneath them as I await the arrival of the speaker stands). I'm sure the reason the Bose speakers sound better is because they are designed to angle upward, which makes perfect sense. These speakers should be similarly redesigned. They are not bookshelf speakers -- they're desktop speakers, meaning they're always going to be below your ear level and will always require the speaker stands for a better listening experience

 Given all of the stellar reviews, including topping several lists of best computer speakers, I couldn't understand it. I considered sending them back, but decided to wait a few days. Lo and behold, one day I lifted them at an angle and the difference was night and day. The sound was clear and crisp

Be Sure to Buy the Speaker Stands

 I like the styling. WHAT'S BAD: I bought these specifically because I wanted to use wired USB to avoid any issues with analog noise or wireless interference. But when wired with USB, there is a very loud pop whenever the system turns on. I don't think that's acceptable from a product which claims to be high-quality audio equipment

 WHAT'S SO-SO: The bass is limited, as these are small speakers. Their marketing says "To say the bass on the A2+ is substantial for their size may be an understatement, but you be the judge." Well, my judgement is they are only typical for a speaker this size. I was hoping for more as they are pretty expensive

Very clear mid-range and highs; the USB audio pops unacceptably when powered on

 Hooked them up, and my first impression was that they sounded good, but empty in the middle. Sure enough, when I A/B'd them against the ProMedia 2.1's, it was no contest.

 I listen mainly to classical as I work at my home office desk. For the past 5 years or so, I've used Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 (two desktop speakers about the same size as the A2+, and a subwoofer), which I've been happy with but decided to try an upgrade. I'd had my eye on these Audioengine speakers for a while, as they seem to get very favorable reviews

 I personally wish it would have just regular old RCA's I would love if it had a phono stage too because if I had a phono stage and then another analog input You're done as it is though here. This is really geared towards digital inputs computers Televisions the younger crowd it's gonna love these you still can put a turntable on here But if you put a turntable on here, you're not putting a CD player on here You could use your CD player as a transport if it has a digital out and then go into one of the digital ends But if you love your CD player, you're not going analog in if you also have a turntable keep that in mind There's ways around it. I think for 99% of the people out there This is a great system at six hundred dollars. You're getting a bi-amp speaker You're getting incredible amounts of bass in a package that you wouldn't be able to get that amount of bass from a passive system So you have well done DSP

 I'm sure for firmware updates Full-size USB input full-size optical input full-size coaxial input for all your digital needs And then there is there's the output to the other speaker kind of an umbilical. So it's a four-prong proprietary somewhat proprietary cable So if you break your cable, you're probably gonna have to reach back out the vanity to get another cable then there's the power cord the only gripe I have about these speakers from an Aesthetics how they're set up standpoint is The power cord. I wish it was removable figure 8 power cord, whatever you need I'm not a big fan of The fixed cable if you need a longer cable then you would be able to get a long cable now there's obviously things you can do you can plug this into an extension cord or what have you but For a product that's this premium looks this good and is in this price range I think a removable power cord is warranted one One of the things about this speaker's deck that's going to get some people it could be a point of contention Because this is limited to 96 so 24 96 not 24 192 So if one is concerned with having bit perfect reproduction of their high-res music if it's a 24 192 track these speakers are gonna be able to do it now. I think it's six hundred dollars here You're getting a ton of engineering some people are gonna take offense that the DAC is limited to $24

 I think for 99% of the people out there This is a great system at six hundred dollars. You're getting a bi-amp speaker You're getting incredible amounts of bass in a package that you wouldn't be able to get that amount of bass from a passive system So you have well done DSP. You have a full DAC. You have a full remote control You have Bluetooth tone controls passive radiator

 So what's in these things? What's in these speakers? What type of speakers are these? What's in these things? What's in these speakers? What type of secrets do they have? Okay, these look demeaning These look diminutive Diminute these look small on camera because I'm shooting kind of with a wide angle Okay They have a five and a quarter inch woofer though and a one inch aluminum dome tweeter The woofer is also aluminum on the back We're gonna get more detail on the back passive radiator and that's one thing about these speakers where they differentiate Themselves from other powered speakers is with the base There's actually four amplifiers in here two for the woofers two for the tweeters They're both class D amplifiers, which means these things are by amped out of the box They also have some magic DSP inside and it's not just a bump in the base these things hit 48 Hertz Minus 3 DB if you were to tell me you can get 48 Hertz out of something this size I would say you're a liar But if anybody can do it, it's when someone is doing it with DSP on a powered speaker power reading for the woofer Amp says 100 watts power reading for the tweeter 20 watts You can tell that they put some care and thought into the way that they designed the amplifiers and these speakers On The back there's a whole bunch of stuff going on so we have passive radiator on top Volume control on the left. These knobs are very nice They're covered in rubber and they're not one of those just spin off into infinity There's a beginning a middle and an end on all of these Okay, so we have volume then we have some tone controls here treble in the middle bass on the right Down here on the left is the subwoofer output next to that is a 3.5 millimeter analog input next to that is the pairing mode now. Here's another cool thing This is a switch you can make it left or the right speaker depending upon where your outlet is You know, you can change this around a little bit little USB thing there
