 Welcome to our 2023 ski test. I've got a Volkl Blaze 86 for you today and this is one of those interesting skis that's kind of reflective of you know kind of the current trends in the ski industry right now of making these 50-50 hybrid touring slash resort skis and this Blaze 86 is a good example of kind of a narrow and light end of that discussion. So this thing at 86 millimeters underfoot built with a light multi-layer wood core so it's wood sandwiched in between some synthetic material to lighten the load and then instead of we see a metal plate on the 94 and the 106 in the Blaze this one is just what appears to be fiberglass under there so there is some more material underfoot but it certainly does nothing to weigh the ski down. This thing's pretty light 173 here 1452 grams so definitely in that touring zone I think kind of that 1500 gram marker is an important one to note so that we're under that kind of puts a more of an uphill influence on it as does the skin notch in the tail so definitely a nod to that uphill capability but like the other Volkl skis we see some other technology including suspension tips and tails so by putting rubberized material at the very ends of the ski that reduces chatter so if you're in the resort and skiing groomers these are actually pretty quiet and stable

 We also get 3D radius on this ski here so 28, 15, and 23 so 15 meters underfoot you know pretty short if you stand on this thing it's going to turn quickly and easily conversely if you let it run especially in softer snow it's not going to be too hooky or grabby it's going to be nice and smooth that 3D radius is a really intuitive way it just basically means that you're able to make any shape turn at any time you don't have to adhere to those numbers so much you know it's more of a feeling than an actual number but a great overall ski from Volkl you know a lot of the reps that we ski with you know they just like skiing on this thing at the mountain because it's super easy and fun and quick and agile certainly it's not going to be as powerful as a Kendo 88 you know in the same rough waist width nor is it going to be as playful as a Revolt 86 you know it does have some stiffness to it and that does make it pretty responsive but when you're going uphill you know definitely going to feel pretty light on your feet certainly makes a great choice for people that are doing back country skiing you know either at the resort or kind of lower angle areas you know definitely just light and easy to use and that's kind of one of the one of the best parts about this thing so that's it that's the Volkl Blaze 86 for 2023 check this thing out at SkiEssentials.com and we'll see you out there on the hill.  This isn't going to be the most powerful ski out there but it's not really intended to be. It likes mellow medium radius turns at moderate speeds. So if you're going to be a hard charger this isn't the perfect ski for you but if you're just a nice casual cruiser skier you're not looking to challenge yourself too hard and you want something that's going to be easy going and predictable all day, this is a good choice.

This ski is really going to be aimed at your intermediate through advanced level skier that's spending most of their time on firm snow but want something that's a little bit more playful, a little more all-mountain and feel.
