The Arc'teryx Nuclei FL is built as a technical jacket to take on alpine conditions; it's almost weatherproof and is incredibly packable and insanely warm. The FL designation means fast and light, providing functionality on any lightweight mission. For a long time, we've been looking for a warm and packable jacket that is adequate for sitting around on high windy bivvies while taking up next to no room in our pack. We're happy to say we've found it. 
Unfortunately, it is expensive. While the fabrics are somewhat breathable, it's not our first choice for hotter uphill slots as it holds in heat. We also wish it had a chest pocket. Aside from these caveats, this is the best midweight jacket we've tested that is both lighter weight and very packable.

How do I decide which loadout to bring on a trip? I really like the Alpha IS (even if I don't ever intend on actually using it for ice climbing...), but isn't it essentially an oversized Atom LT stapled to an Alpha AR, minus the pit zips? In what case should I take the Alpha IS with me instead of the Atom/Alpha AR combo? The IS also works pretty well as a belay parka (like a thinner Dually, I suppose?), but isn't that also what the Nuclei and Fitz Roy are for? Should I use the IS in the winter and the Nuclei in the warmer months? Is the thing I'm "missing" an active insulation piece (Proton)? If it's pretty cold, I can hike in the Alpha IS, but if I need to stop, then wouldn't I want to put something over it, rather than taking it off to put something underneath? 

The Cerium I'm thinking of taking backpacking for packable warmth (though would the Nuclei be better?), and the Nanopuff and Down Sweater are pretty much for casual wear.

Yet I still never know for sure if a purchase will help me in the way I intend. And I do not feel like I am satisfied with my setup, I am not always comfortable.

Kit Me Out

 Going for a walk I'll put it over a fleece down to -10ºC, the constant low level activity keeps me warm. For static use it doesn't even make it down to freezing. Conversely at freezing it's way too warm if I'm going for a walk (unless it's blustery), and I won't wear it at all above +15ºC.

 Ventrix is heavier and breathes less well. Kor Strata breathes better but it packs out faster and the details are less nice.

 It definitely is designed to accommodate less trim individuals, but you'll end up between sizes somewhat often. The Proton is a fair bit more tapered in the torso. But overall I would say that the Atom LT is true to size.

Hello r/arcteryx! This begins a new series that finally follows through on a promise I made to curb the torrent of genuine and reasonable questions. Apologies its taken awhile to put together. Here's how it's going to work:

1. I'm going to select a popular product from the Arc'teryx assortment, write up a brief on it, and a series of question prompts.
2. I'd like the community to answer these questions, and add additional comments about their experiences and views on the product.

# Atom LT, Research First Steps

The Atom LT is a general purpose synthetic insulator. It has some breathability, some wind resistance, and fits a wide range of people well. It works as an outer layer, or a mid layer. The fit is trim, it should be able to accept a fleece underneath but not much more.

Generally the Atom LT is best used above freezing for most people. Although if you are aerobic it can be used in much colder temperatures.

It sits in the centre of the Arc'teryx synthetic range. Not as breathable as a Proton LT, not as wind resistant as a Nuclei FL, not as packable and light as an Atom SL, and not as warm as an Atom AR.

If you aren't sure what jacket to get, this is a good start.

The Atom LT was first introduced in Spring 2010 as a men's and women's jacket and hoody. It used a Luminara nylon face fabric, Polartec Power Stretch Hardface side panels, and Coreloft 60g/m^(2) insulation. The women's medium hoody was 365g and the men's medium hoody was 375g.

In Fall 2014 the jacket was revised. This iteration had Tinthan face fabric (46g/m^(2) 20D nylon ripstop with a polyurethane DWR, stretch). Polartec Power Stretch with Hardface® Technology for the side panels (230 g/m^(2) 88% polyester, 12% elastane, 4-way stretch). It continued to feature Coreloft insulation at 60g/m^(2). The women's medium hoody was 330g and the men's 360g.

There were a few others updates, some silent some not:

In Fall 2015 the Tinthan face fabric was replaced with the Tyono 20 nylon face

In Fall 2018 it was revised (from model 14644 to 24477, men's hoody), although it isn't entirely apparent what changed. This seems to be a minor revision. At some point the dual hem adjusters were replaced with a single hem adjustment. The jacket version apparently lost all hem adjusters. It also gained the No Slip Zip feature.

In Spring 2019 the Atom LT side panels stopped being listed as Polartec. They changed to an Evertex fleece, per [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/arcteryx/comments/gc8035/question_for_20192020_atom_lt_owners_on_fleece/).

In Fall 2020 the Atom LT was revised again. The big change here is using Coreloft Compact 60g/m^(2), which should improve the longevity of the insulation. There is also a new dope dyed nylon liner. Women's medium hoody is 320g and men's is 375g.

## Known Issues

1. The face fabric can abrade and pill from backpacks, seatbelts, chin stubble.
2. The fleece side panels can let wind through a bit more than some people want.
3. Older models using Coreloft insulation tended to have their insulation thin (pack out) over time, and would get less warm. For the Fall 2020 season Arc'teryx changed to Coreloft Compact which should be more resilient to this issue.

<p><strong>†</strong> - There seems to be an internal model number change in Fall 2011. 4-digit model numbers are F09-S11, 5-digit model numbers are F11-Onwards. The product itself does not seem to have changed. It’s possible that some of these model number updates are a result of production location changes.</p>

<p><strong>‡</strong> - Something weird is going on with the F18 and F20 model numbers. All the way back to Spring 2018 all Atom LT versions are using the F20 model numbers, per the website. However, there was definitely a revision in Fall 2018. If you search the F18 models you find the items you expect. So I’m leaving it this way, just be aware it may not be correct.</p>

<p><strong>††</strong> - I’m not entirely sure when the women’s Atom LT Vest was discontinued, but I believe it was last available in Fall 2020.</p>

<h1>Known Issues</h1>

<ol>
<li>The face fabric can abrade and pill from backpacks, seatbelts, chin stubble.</li>
<li>The fleece side panels can let wind through a bit more than some people want.</li>
<li>Older models using Coreloft insulation tended to have their insulation thin (pack out) over time, and would get less warm. For the Fall 2020 season Arc&#39;teryx changed to Coreloft Compact which should be more resilient to this issue.</li>
<li>Older models had an issue with the front zip being too smooth. It would fall down just doing simple activities like walking. Arc&#39;teryx fixed this with the No Slip Zip feature around 2017, which inserts several &quot;stops&quot; in the top of the zipper (less smooth sections). This prevents the slider from falling down.</li>

Atom LT, Research First Steps

The Micro Puff is synthetic, so much easier to care for in this regard (it can get wet), but if your bag is super tight and you put it in its stuff sack every day, the insulation will degrade pretty quickly. It would be best if you have a lot of space in your bag and let the jacket loft (don't put pressure on the insulation).

I vote against the Micro Puff if you don't have enough space in your bag so it won't degrade too quickly. If it tears, you'd have to tape it with tenacious tape, which works, but if that happens a lot it's also a pain.

Hi folks. Looking for a lightweight packable jacket. I've narrowed it down to the Micro Puff and Cerium SL. Is there anyone who has experience with both? If so, which one would you recommend? I have never owned any Patagonia or Arcteryx products. 

I don’t have a particular use case. I guess I just want it to be super light and packable. I am in the UK and the weather at the moment is mild in the daytime and cold-ish in the evening. So I have to carry a jacket every day with me in order to wear it once the sun goes down. Hence why I am looking at superlight.

Micro Puff vs Cerium SL?

Anyway, I find myself increasingly looking at other brands and seeing features I wish I had. An expandable ventilated collar like the Mammut La List Pro is something I would love to have in the Rush or Sabre LT. The Nuclei FL not having a 2 way zipper is silly. No high loft fleece?

For hiking, have you tried the Atom SL lightly insulated jacket or Proton FL? I think these would be more suitable breathable insulated pieces for your hiking level, that would eliminate the heavier fleece piece during your hikes while still providing same level of comfort. 

OK, sure, the title is a bit overblown, but hear me out.

For years I've hiked/skied/skinned with a lightweight but sturdy shell, wicking baselayer (t-shirt, long sleeved or thermal), a trusty fleece jacket or pullover, and a down jacket - if absolutely necessary - stuffed in a pack.

For most mild situations, a baselayer and shell sufficed, and the shell was needed only if there was a moderate drizzle. If the temperature became a bit cooler - relatively speaking, but let's use 38°F as a baseline, moderate 10 mph wind - a fleece jacket/pullover came out, which still allowed for a fair amount of moisture transport/breathability but helped maintain warmth to the point where you didn't overheat as the wind helped to moderate your core temperature from becoming too hot.

Skiing - 25°F day, sunny or light precipitation - baselayer, fleece jacket (my trusty Monkey Man as an example - which has held up well), and shell. In this scenario, the fleece afforded more breathability / moisture transport. Personal comfort in cold differs because of a variety of factors, but I could comfortably wear this layering system into the low 20's on the resort. For skinning - a baselayer and a fleece is fine, assuming no precipitation, until 30°F or so. If there is significant snow while skinning, a thermal baselayer and shell work well until about 25°F

Had tried the Nano Air and ended up returning it. For many temperatures it was too warm and wasn't nearly as breathable as a good fleece jacket/pullover, and at the point where the temperature dropped and heat retention requirements trumped moisture transport/breathability, it wasn't warm enough and I jumped to a Atom AR/down sweater or equivalent for a midlayer/insulation layer.

Maybe climbers have a better use case? In fairness, I do recall one walk (not hike) in the fall where the Nano Air seemed to work quite well, but that's not what I bought it for. I understand the philosophy behind Proton LT/Nano Air type jackets, and they could be designed more for climbers than hikers / skiers...anyone swear by these pieces?
