On the macOS side, the obvious choice is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020). Not only is it compact and lightweight, but its M1 processor packs more than enough power to handle general productivity tasks and even some light video editing and gaming. On top of that, it can do all of it while remaining completely silent because it's a fanless device, which is great if you're noise-sensitive or plan to use it in a quiet office or classroom. The battery lasts a little over 13 hours of light use, and even if you need to plug it in, its 30W charger is small and fits easily into most bags.

As you would expect, the build quality is outstanding. It's a solid piece of aluminum with no flex in the display or keyboard deck. The screen is bright, sharp, and colorful, and the keyboard isn't fatiguing to type on for extended periods. Its gigantic haptic touchpad tracks all movements and gestures well, and its webcam captures a clear image for video calls. The port selection could be better as it only has two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, though that's usually a tradeoff for such a compact form factor.

Other features include a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, which you can use to log in quickly, authorize purchases on the App Store, and auto-fill passwords saved on your iCloud account. As is typical with most thin and light laptops, the memory and storage aren't user-replaceable. Most people can get by with 8GB of RAM, though it may be worth getting more if you tend to have a lot of things running simultaneously. So, if you prefer macOS or are willing to give it a try, the MacBook Air is an easy recommendation.

The best laptop under $1,000 we've tested is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020). Even though it's a model from 2020 and there's a newer M2 MacBook Air, we still recommend the M1 MacBook Air because it's an incredible value. Its build quality beats anything in this price range, and it provides the best user experience with a sharp display, a comfortable keyboard, and a large and responsive haptic touchpad. It's very portable thanks to its thin and light design, and its battery lasts easily through a typical 8-hour school or workday. Apple's M1 SoC has enough processing power to handle light tasks like web browsing, text formatting, video playback, and even the occasional photo editing and gaming session.

There's a fingerprint sensor built into the power button so you can log in quickly and get to work. The webcam's video quality is excellent even though it's only 720p, and voices sound clear through the microphone. You don't need to worry about any loud fan noise since it's a fanless device.  It's a 16 by 10 aspect ratio or something that ever asks on every single Windows notebook review. The resolution here is excellent, especially with Mac Os scaling and the true tone which warms up the the colors a bit uh, depending on the time of day. Really pleasant for the eyes. We have glass here that you have to clean occasionally and I don't really care about the slightly chunkier bezels

 I gotta plug in an external amp because otherwise their internals mess up the audio signal on my blade. I love the new updated keyboard. It's fast to get used to just enough travel distance and a silent profile. The backlight function is now in the command center for manual control, but it's always smart enough to auto adjust anyway

 You've probably already seen a thousand reviews of this machine, so this is not a benchmark video, but if you haven't bought one yet, perhaps this video will nudge you in one direction or the other. My wife loves it. she says, uh, it fits in her purse. it doesn't hurt her back, It's light and small and it gets the job done all right

The other thing the Air doesn’t have is a touchscreen. There’s nothing much more to say about it at this point; if Apple can add trackpad support to iPadOS, it can probably figure out touch support in macOS. But the company doesn’t seem interested in that, so I wouldn’t expect to see it happen anytime soon. At least the trackpad is great: it’s huge like on all modern MacBooks, but it still feels great to scroll and click on

The other big news is the processor selection, which consists of three special versions of Intel’s 10th-generation Y-series chips. Previous MacBook Airs offered but one anemic dual-core processor choice; now, you can spec an Air out with a 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7 if you wish.

But if you push the Air for a little while, things will get hot, and the system won’t allow the processor to get all the way up to 3.2GHz. In my tests with Cinebench, clock speed was capped at around 1.5GHz under sustained workloads

This would not be a huge problem, but why does Apple not manage to create a completely passively cooled device? A silent MacBook Air would be a great, but we have the suspicion that Apple limits the Air on purpose

Verdict – The Core i3 is the better choice for everyday tasks

In terms of its price, the entry level is particularly attractive, especially since there are always some good offers from vendors over the years. The additional charge for the octa-core GPU and 16 GB of RAM are not necessarily worthwhile, and the fast 8 GB of Unified RAM should be completely sufficient for most users. The 256-GB SSD represents more of a limitation, and the premiums for more storage space are very hefty. The additional charge for the MacBook Pro 13 with active cooling is also only worthwhile for very few users

 Buyers should find out in advance whether the software they use could run into trouble or whether there are alternatives. However, any limitations in the app selection from this are balanced by the numerous newly added iOS apps that will run perfectly thanks to the ARM chip. The new Apple chips celebrate a successful debut in the MacBook Air. With maturing software, probably&nbsp;no one will miss the Intel chips in the Mac&nbsp;in the future

 On the other hand, the emulation is fast enough to still get better results than when using the old entry-level processors from Intel. Unfortunately, not everything works perfectly yet. From stuttering interfaces and longer load times up to app crashes, there are many open problems. So you have to hope for native versions of the software or updates from Apple

 We can also reassure you about the surface temperatures, with only the internals getting very hot, as is typical for Apple. A huge advantage of the lack of a fan is the silent operation of the notebook, which is perfect in quiet surroundings. The new Apple M1 also has a positive effect on the battery life. With its energy-saving cores, it is able to save a lot of power in our WLAN battery test, and it can even last through a full work day at maximum display brightness

Verdict

 Well, this got me to assess what I will be using the machine for and for how long.  Storage can be added with external drives, slower, but it will let you scrape by. RAM is another story. When you constantly use up RAM, the system starts using "swap memory" where it uses the SSD to store temporary files

  The M1 model has blown me away with its speed and smooth running with a large number of apps open, including Final Cut & Logic Pro. Admittedly the 2017 MB was the bottom of the line and I suffered under frequent overheating issues with too many things open and the single C-port fiasco.  I likely would have gone with the 7 core GPU model if one had been in stock at the time of purchase, but I wanted 512 GB of SSD space, so I paid more by going with eh 8 core. From everything that I've seen, the lack of more RAM upgrades is not nearly as important as it was with the Intel x86 processors and is really only useful when you have many GPU intensive "Pro Apps" running at the same time

 Upgrading to the cheaper ($699+Upgrades) M1 Mac mini would be the cheapest way to get better performance for the Pro Apps, but I need a laptop, so... So, that is why I'm planning to return this machine and get one (likely the MacBook Pro M1), with 16 GB RAM & 1 TB SSD

 I traded in my (MNYH2LL/A) - 2017 12" Macbook with the Intel M3 processor, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB Ram. I kept my charging adapter & C-cable (which are both compatible with the M1 Late 2020 Macbook Air), so ended up with a $330 Apple Store instant credit towards the M1.  The M1 model has blown me away with its speed and smooth running with a large number of apps open, including Final Cut & Logic Pro. Admittedly the 2017 MB was the bottom of the line and I suffered under frequent overheating issues with too many things open and the single C-port fiasco

MAKE SURE YOU GET AS MUCH MEMORY & STORAGE AS YOU CAN AFFORD - SPECIAL ORDER IF NEED BE

 I didn't know enough to immerse myself in the (hard-to-find) Essentials Manual before touching the FORCE touchpad. Took a long time that to realize that "force" really meant FORCE (as in "smash it down" ) There is a System Preferences bypass, but I got embroiled in a DARK MODE display (black screen), missing cursor, and of course loss of Intel-chip based favorite apps which all took precedence over trying to find and read a possible Manual. Help menu did not help.

RELEASED TOO SOON

 There's a satisfying heft to typing, and unlike the previous version you'll never wonder if a keystroke registered. &nbsp;The review unit I've been using is the upgraded Core i5 version, and in initial work-from-home testing, I found it to be roughly on-par with current Windows Core i5 laptops, but seriously lagging some recent Core i7 models, like the new Dell XPS 13 we just tested. Battery life was 9:40 on our streaming video battery drain test, which is a little behind Apple's claims, but good enough for all-day, every day use.&nbsp;       Dan Ackerman/CNETI have not tested the cheaper Core i3 base model, but I'm sure it's fine for everyday office or student tasks, even some modest graphic design and photo editing. But I do cringe a bit at paying a thousand bucks for a Core i3 CPU

 In 2018, the system finally got a&nbsp;much-needed reboot, adding a high-res screen, slimmer bezels and Touch ID. But at the same time, it also added the much-maligned butterfly keyboard and kicked the price up. &nbsp;I always felt that was a mistake -- $999 is an important psychological and financial barrier, especially for students, writers and anyone who needs maximum reliability and usability on a budget.&nbsp;Keyboard evolution&nbsp;Now that I've had a chance to go hands-on with the new MacBook Air, the keyboard really stands out as a major selling point

 Put them next to each other and try to tell the two apart. You can't; they're identical. Until, that is, you open both lids. It's a subtle thing, but if you look closely there's a new look and feel to the keyboard

Recent Windows Convert......

My actual results? I’m getting between eight and 10 hours of real, sustained work depending on how hard I am pushing it. That’s not quite 50 percent better than the last MacBook Air, but it’s very close. 

 It’s nigh unheard of for a computer with an integrated GPU. I am doing work on this MacBook Air that would have brought my old MacBook Air to its knees.

The other differences are all on the inside. There’s no fan anymore, for one thing, just an aluminum heat spreader. But even when pushing this machine to its absolute limit, I never felt it get more than a little warm. Apple knows what the thermal ceiling for this system is, and it keeps the MacBook well within it

In a week of testing, I have pushed this computer and its new Apple-made processor to its limits and found that those limits exceeded my expectations on nearly every level.

 Most laptops with a good amount of RAM don’t struggle being put through these paces, so I ran a 4K export test in Adobe Premiere Pro to give it more of a workout. It didn’t break much of a sweat here either, sprinting to complete the export of a five-minute, 33-second video in four minutes, 14 seconds. It’s worth keeping in mind that Premiere Pro can work in mysterious ways sometimes, with better specs not necessarily leading to faster export times. We’ve seen some less pricey laptops perform just as well in this test as the ZBook Studio G8, if not better, though this is a good result
