The Numatic Henry Compact HVR160 would be my suggestion as well, which is a semi-commercial canister made in the UK that's perfectly suited for hard floors and area rugs. They're among the most powerful non-central vacuums out there, so it'll basically be like a significantly less bulky and better filtering version of your shop vac. I think it'd be worth getting an attachment like this that you can easily lift up for large debris as well.

Hi vacuum enthusiasts! We live in a small farm in the mountains and I've had a heck of a time finding a vacuum that can adequately deal with the debris in our home. We have dogs and cats and live on a dusty red clay hillside that inevitably makes daily vacuuming or sweeping necessary. We've tried a few home vacuums to no avail, returning them once it is apparent that they can't handle the job. We have had success with a high powered shop vacuum but the filter is awful and dusts everything slightly as it works which is a serious bummer. Are there any vacuums that can handle a job like this? We have no wall to wall carpeting, just wood floors and some area rugs. If I was more prepared I'd share a pic of the daily pile I sweep up, usually small pebbles lots of clay dust, dog hair, small twigs and dirt... we work from home and have a very industrious kitchen and living space so removal of shoes every time we come in is not an option. So far it is working okay but I have concerns if this is a brand new product or not. The box was definitely old, unsealed and in bad condition. And the wheels look like they have some wear already.

For your floor type and apartment size i’d say the over budget CDN$335 Numatic James or CDN$399 Henry HVR160 are a great buy. Great filtration, reliable, built tough and the face! But the Miele would also be a great option too!

I'll also be more inclined to use something more frequently that doesn't take lugging out of closet. No pets, but lots of long hair.

Initially looked at the Shark ZS360C as I found the duoclean idea compelling as well as the non-traditional "self cleaning" brushroll (again, lots of long hair and I abhor trying to cut hair off a traditional roller), but reviews talked about plastic gears stripping (despite 4.6 stars on Amazon and elsewhere). I've used a Dyson (I think it was a V7?) and I was frankly not impressed with the build quality either.

That said, while I'd like to buy something with longevity, I also unsurprisingly have a budget I'd like to stick to, probably around $300CAD or less. Obviously there are tradeoffs but I'm not sure where to compromise.

Looking for slim vacuum cleaner for laminate and low carpet (Canada)

First impressions are good. Suction is good, pretty compact but not small, cord works well, its heavier then it looks but manageable, useful tools, and price wise I think it's worth it (paid$340 w/tax) although a lower price point would make it a much better buy. Tools friction fit together, hose is long enough and flexible, floortool is good on hardwood but takes more effort on rugs, I think it's relatively quiet with no high pitched whistle, and it rolls around easy. These are just my initial impressions, will update if warranted

In that case, I'd say to get a $330 Henry HVR160 with a $45 Wessel Werk TK286 turbine. I have a one story house that is 1700sqft of mostly hardwood and tile with a few plush area rugs.  My budget is ideally $400, but for a true BIFL purchase that fits my needs I’ll spend whatever it takes. 

I’ve seen a few Miele’s on eBay going for reasonable prices, is that a good place to get a vacuum? I live near a vacuum repair shop so I’m not too worried about issues that come with an open box or pre-owned product (unless there are specific issues to be aware of there). 

A cordless vac is very tempting, but my home gets very dusty and I don’t want to spend $300+ on something that will only last a few years.  Are there any that are reliable and can be easily repaired?  I can deal with battery replacements if the mechanics are reliable.
