Be careful about Emily Oster’s recommendations
Thankfully, I am a neuroscientist who feels comfortable incorporating information from Oster, Like a Mother, actual journal articles, etc and making decisions. I know that women around the world eat stinky cheese and sushi in pregnancy - the point is being aware of where your food comes from and the safety of it & I'm not interested in only heeding the advice of an OBGYN driven by fear of malpractice and an overly paternalistic medical training system that teaches far to little about maternal stress, black women's maternal mortality, etc in med school and residency. Also re: orthopedists, I would always go to a physical therapist and physiatrist to get a second opinion before getting surgery because orthopedists make money off surgery and are KNOWN to recommend surgery unnecessarily. Taking one book as gospel -- no, but also not great to tell people to ONLY listen to their doctors when that can get women, disproportionately Black women, killed.
