Roads are 2 lane and you have to constantly use the incoming lane to overtake giant trucks completely laden with cargo that's way over safety guidelines (and usually not tied down). Driving is not a glamorous thing here, so until now so I have been renting a shit sedan from a manufacturer I don't even recognize. It feels like its made of more plastic than metal, beats you up over every bump, and has abysmal acceleration (probably like 12s 0-60). It can barely overtake the aforementioned giant trucks.

Japanese officials approached Honda and Nissan with the idea of merging, they both rejected.
Coupled with #1 and how incredibly cheap and old their cars feel compared to the competition, they essentially mortgaged their positive brand equity for short term volume and market share, and now the chickens have come home to roost. If you see someone you know in a Toyota or Honda, or heck these days even Hyundai or Kia you think ,"Oh, they're pretty sensible". When you see them in a Nissan or Mitsubishi you think, "Ouch, they must be having financial trouble".

Nissan plans $2.8 billion in cuts, dumps Datsun brand as it restructures
Its interesting that any automaker which has gunned to become number 1 has always ended up suffering for it. Personally, if they're not willing to end the production of half of their line up, it won't matter much. Since they think reducing only by a million cars, is somehow going to make them more profitable. On top of that, they should maybe fix or offload Mitsubishi, unless they're only keeping them around for the patents...
