BIFL Rain Jacket Suggestions
Good brands for these rain jackets are Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, Arcteryx, Eddie Bauer, Marmot, North Face (especially their Summit Series, which is more technical than their regular models). These jackets won't be BIFL, but they will really keep you dry, and you can find them from $100 to $1000, depending on what you need.

Marmot Fortress 3p setup in the backyard to test for 35F overnight
With that being said I would not use this tent for sweatingly hot summers in the deep south or if you are concerned about weight. This tent is near 7lbs with the footprint. Marmot does now make a UL version called the Fortress UL.

Long term use of down vs synthetic insulation: what are your real experiences with warmth loss, compression, etc.?
I finished up the triple crown in early 2000's and by '05 I had well over 10k miles in Marmot sleeping bags (this is one of the few bags with 800+ and 1/2 zip back in the day). I have 2 Hydrogens 30° and 2 Helium 15° . 1 Hydrogen and 1 Helium has a lot more use the the others, 75% maybe. Even though all the bags have been professionally washed by REI with nikwax there is a big difference in loft.
